Seasons Information

  • Seasons are coming this Thursday, January 28th. Here's the Seasons Explained video from the devs:

Here's a post from Joe Neate explaining how Seasons will work in the game:

    https://www.seaofthieves.com/news/seasons-explained

Here's everything you can unlock through progressing in Season One without spending an extra penny!

The Plunder Pass is an optional paid augment to Seasons. You don't have to purchase this to participate in Seasons.

Here's another post from Joe Neate explaining the Plunder Pass:

    https://www.seaofthieves.com/news/plunder-pass-explained

    In Joe's words:

The Plunder Pass is the Sea of Thieves twist on a Battle Pass. However, unlike some games’ Battle Passes, it does not gate access to gameplay; any player can progress through all 100 levels of a Season by playing the game and taking on Trials to raise their Renown, earning rewards along the way without having to make any additional purchases. The Plunder Pass is a totally optional companion purchase to a Sea of Thieves Season, and provides immense value for money on items from the Pirate Emporium.

Here are the extra items you can unlock by progressing seasons with the Plunder Pass

Note: the new Plunder Pass items will eventually make their way to the Emporium after the end of the season.

  • I was prepared to give plunder pass a try but I own most of those so I don't see how it would be worth it.

Good value but not something many will need this first season. Which is think is overall a good thing to ease into this new system. People will be mostly be satisfied with the free content. This pass will be great for new players or people that have been holding out on buying stuff so far

Overall excited for the new update and I love the system of just doing random things. It breaks up monotony and brings people together for common goals.

    Very pro-base/gamer update imo

  • @wolfmanbush

Going by the video, it does sound like you can progress through the Season levels and buy the Plunder Pass whenever you want. I am on the fence about whether it's worth buying or not, as I already own a few of the items and I'm not interested in the Ruby Splashtail stuff. The weapons and sails are the only things that interest me.

Still, I am pleasantly surprised at how much is available to unlock for free. It's like the complete opposite of the F2P Season Pass model, which usually would gate the majority of content behind a paywall.

  • I can honestly say, i was left thinking, oh dear! That's it? Watching this.

Just more of the same grinding to earn a few items i will likely never use.

And i feel that normal items coming to normal stores will be fewer and fewer than before, not like the shops have seen many new items for a cosmetic based game for a long time!

Perhaps there is lots they didn't show in this trailer that i am unaware of?

But if that's all the next 3 months have to offer, i'm not sure i will be eager to jump in and play too much.

Very unimpressed with that presentation.. By far the weakest i have seen since before launch, even the skeleton thrones event makes this look dull and more of the same.

Looks like many more staff have moved over to Everwild and other projects than they would have us believe. Because nothing is new to see here.

  • @needsmokes

They did also mention "events" in the video, so we'll see what they bring in terms of gameplay and rewards. This is Season One, so I think it was always going to be relatively light on content. With 3 months to go until the next Season, I am hoping for big things to come.

  • @realstyli

I admire your optimism, But to be blunt. And even though i'm sure remote working has put many plans to hell and back, the past year was the worst in terms of interesting addicions to the game so far.
I was believing this was leading up to something amazing for Seasons..
Now we are to wait for season 2 for bigger things to come?

I can't help but feel that Rare is now just using this game to squeeze as much revenue as possible whilst it's still popular, with as little effort as possible.

  • @needsmokes

I am sure working from home has had a massive impact, like with most industries, but it's also the first update that hasn't followed the monthly schedule in a loooong time. This is what a lot of us wanted, bigger updates and more time spent polishing them. That unfortunately means there is this period of transition for the first of those, but that's why I am still very optimistic for Season Two.

There's also the new Merchant Alliance quest, which is teased at the start of the Seasons video, so we'll see what that entails. And we don't yet know what the events will bring, some of those so far have been pretty interesting (as long as they've fixed the tracking issues!).

If they were looking to squeeze revenue, there are more lucrative ways to do it than provide an optional paid pass and to give away Ancient Coins on the free tier.

I've always seen the working from home as a distraction thing

To me it's just a pretty basic business plan. Keep the casuals happy and the new players giving it a try and if some of the people that stuck around head off in another direction that's just how it goes (it happens naturally anyway people often move on from things)

I don't think it's truly a pandemic thing or work situation thing I think it's just overall a pretty predictable and effective way to make the game stick around. Which benefits anyone that enjoys playing it. What I really enjoy as someone that doesn't really enjoy too many tweaks when it comes to something I enjoy is that this game is so far keeping all the things that I enjoy about it and just adding more random things to do while I enjoy it. I like that sort of adding on to adventure rather than messing with the foundation that supports what I enjoy.

I think more will come later in the year that may be bigger but right now this is a smooth transition from cult classic fun game into more mainstream fun game. I think it's gonna be a fun 3 months out there on the seas

As someone working in media, I can absolutely tell you that working from home has had a huge negative affect on projects. Decisions take longer and getting huge files transferred is dependant on individuals' internet speeds. Imagine that with trying to get new builds to everyone each time they do a change.

They are limited by crossplay right now with content. At home or not at home that is still a growing pain. Content is gonna not be massive until the older hardware/systems no longer get support

Personally I'm fine with the older hardware still having access and I think these daily events and ongoing events bring more on a day to day basis than the larger content additions. People grind out new content quickly then they get right back to complaining about content I think they throw so much stuff at us on a daily basis right now that many of us are just happy we have goals to achieve and rewards to acquire whether we play an hour or a bunch of hours there is just so much to do and unlock these days.

  • Well blow-me-down if this isn’t the first biggest disappointment of 2021.
This Seasons pish is just busy work for cosmetics and (meaningless) levelling up.

Forts, Megs, Skelly Ships, Krakens, Volcanoes, Ghost fleets, Ashen Lords and Tall Tales are the types of content adventurous pirates crave.

Genuinely dismayed at the downward course Rare has set for this sublime game.

  • (Apparently Job bie knife is a censored word so I can't directly reply to you :/)

What you're talking about is the plunder pass. Seasons are the 3 month long updates where the actual content comes.

Remember, they've had 1 month to make content that spans 3 months. By the time season 2 rolls around they would have a full 3 months to develop new features and content. Season 2 also happens to be the 3 year anniversary so I have high hopes.

  • @frankdoodle1
Ahoy! Aware of the Plunder Pass (ironic naming there) but it the ‘tasks’ that grate the good and personally looking for something with more substance than nebulous future content.

  • There has been a lot of "Jam tommorow" since before halloween. Previous updates have been light to allow for work on season 1. I`m keen to try out the new merchant mission but there needs to be much more than that to do.

it does sound like there will be updates during the season that will bring more stuff too. i don't think the plan is "one update a season, ie: every 3 months"

at least i hope so. more variety can only help.

  • I'm a bit confused and would like some clarification from the developers. I recall a dev saying in the past that cosmetic content from the season will still be available after the season ends, but after reading through everything it seems to me that this only applies to the premium Plunder Pass content and the Emporium. So here's my question:

Q: Will the free cosmetic content for each season be made available again once the season ends or further in the future in some way, such as in the regular shops, or behind commendations, or future events?

I thought we were moving away from one-and-done cosmetic releases, but I fear that may not be the case at all.

Also, only 3 months for 100 levels? And with other in-game events or things to do getting in the way!? Not counting extra-curriculars, that means we'd need to get 1.12 levels each day during the season, on average! And February only has 28 days! 😥

  • @realstyli said in Seasons Information:

Here's everything you can unlock through progressing in Season One without spending an extra penny!

It's nice to hear, but other games have told us that before. Technically you could unlock it all without spending a penny, but then the logistics on actually doing it are nigh unresonable.

That being said, I do trust Rare more than the bigger companies, so I'm willing to see it through to get the whole picture. But I'm still nervous about it all. I liked SoT because it wasn't like other online games. So anything they add that narrows that gap is going to leave me trepidatious.

I'm still on board, Rare, but I'm watching you.

  • I'll try to get the Pirate Legend Curse - that's all i really want since... long time ago :)

Are the weapons from the pass the DA Set?
Thought it would be a costy gold thing not emporium, or can you buy it both ways or arent these the DA weapons?

tbh, i think i wont buy them even if i have the money ingame.
Im fine with my Athena stuff plus the Revenant Curse.

  • @stundorn Those are close to the Forsaken Ashes weapons, but slightly different. Also on the fence about getting the Plunder Pass. Those sails do look pretty spiffy, after all.

  • @arctroopachedda i have the foraken Ashen Set complete, look more like Ashen Dragon stuff, but anyway .
Yeah the sails aren't my thing, i have lots of cosmetics i acn choose from and until there is nothing i think "must have" i wont bother.
Tons of cosmetics are unsued in my chests, so i dont need more unused cosmetics :P

  • I’m a complete newbie to SoE, had it on my hard drive through game pass but never got round to playing. A couple of weeks back I decided to check it out and I was impressed with what I found. I love this game, yes it’s frustrating when you get pirated on by a pvp slayer but that’s part of the fun for me. Any way not here to rehash that conversation. I think the addition of seasons, plus the fact that all 100 lvls are free, plus the fact that there is now the option to complete trials has just given me a treasure trove full of goodies to enjoy at a time when I’m still learning the ropes. I’ve not even completed my first tall tale. My head will spin like a compass in storm next time I jump in my ship, wondering where shall I go what shall I do. This is fantastic stuff. Right, now all I need is a crew! 🤪

Most of the free cosmetics will also be available to players after the season ends, they will shift to the regular stores and be locked behind one or multiple commendations before you can purchase them, which commendations ? that is TBD.

However there will be one or a couple of cosmetics like mayba a scar or tattoo that only will be available during the season and will be unobtainable afterwards, this is so that there is still a small "I was there" and "look at what i achieved" sorta thing

  • That’s one cheesy scar, dang

  • Oh, its exactly what I expected. Recycled old cosmetics sold to us in a new way. This is what rare works on instead of working on the games bugs.
    LAME.

  • fortnite suits, and for premium plunder pass not one new complete shipset ,just a figurehead bait to let you head over to the emporium buying the rest of the set.yes just 10 bucks but the emporium is anyway overpriced

You get an entirely new weapon set!

@BoomTownBoss New sail and flag, new weapons, new hairstyles, new outfits, new tattoo, and a new curse - none of which is recycled fronmprevious content. And additional ancient coins! I'd call that a good deal.

  • @galactic-geek are they really new?.i get also the splastail whatever costume , items i would use for a week and then never again.,the best parts are the haircuts i get for free.dosent played the new update but what i saw ,we get books from the new merchants missions,im sure they unlock a cosmetic .all the last updates just added a grind....

  • I don't have any notifications in the top left corner of the screen when I perform a task or action of the season. Do you have the same problem?

  • So far I'm digging the new update and enjoying the renown structure. It's drawing friends back into the game that haven't played in years, which makes me happy.

I love that ancient coins are part of the seasons rewards as it helps give access to that content without necessarily paying extra (though not entirely sure how much it provides yet).

It would be neat to see a pet thrown into the renown rewards somewhere along the line to also help those who might be adverse to buying ancient coins.

I can't wait to get back out on the high seas.

  • I dont seem to be getting any renown notifications popping up, anyone else?.
    On xbox sx

There is a known delay. Despite that, it is still tracking. This has been confirmed by the devs. Just keep sailing and it will pop up after a short time.

  • Imagine the fans (users) making new release info on a SoT official forum and not the @Deckhands or the employees.

@RealStyli Thanks for doing their job! - Keep doing it.

EDIT: Im hanging around here all day insted of the dumb twitter or FB account of theirs.

  • @realstyli the whole game had been light in content from release, why would this be any different?

  • @needsmokes I agree. Its just the same recycling of cosmetics. From the moment I heard they were doing seasons I thought.. I'm out. This game has continually disappointed me from launch being obviously unfinished. I bought the game, i have game pass. Stop being greedy.. Must of your development since lauch should have included in the game anyway
