Pirate presets

  • The game now has extremely inconvenient character customization. The pirate's appearance does not affect the game balance.
To Completely change the appearance of a pirate, it must be removed (the entire progression is lost) or a paid option (random).

There are a lot of cosmetic items in the game and I think many players are interested in how they would look on another character. If players had the opportunity to have at least 2 free character slots, it would justify collecting all the cosmetic items in the game.

  • I'd like this a lot, but it's unlikely to ever happen. If it does, I wouldn't expect it to be free. I'd spend 5-10 bucks on a second appearance if I knew I could keep my old one. I've grown to like my pirate.

I think part of the experience they intend for you to have is to pick a pirate and be locked in with the one you choose for immersion purposes - this pirate is your identity in Sea of Thieves. Hence the paywall on the appearance potion, which is most likely there in part to deter players from going through multiple appearance changes.

The clothes you put on your Pirate are one thing, but perhaps they don't want for your Pirate model to be a freely interchangeable cosmetic aspect. It would be a bit immersion-breaking IMO.

I think the option to change your pirate at all was something they were reluctant to add in the first place and only added for people who for whatever reason, picked a meme pirate before they got attached to the game or a pirate with features they simply could not tolerate.
