Problems with Briggsy

  • Ok so, I want to share my crew's experience attempting the Tall Tale that has you fight Captain Briggsy.

We enjoyed the heck out of the quest line, find the islands, get the key and chest, and then we were off to fight Briggsy. When we found her though, we didn't know it was going to take a good 40 minutes of hacking, and slashing. She can raise an infinite number of skeletons and can apparently absorb an infinite amount of damage without slowing down.

We were getting pretty annoyed after 40 minutes with no indication she was taking any damage at all. Were we missing something?

So we decided to bring the ship around the island to the beach where we could shoot her with our cannons. Worked great in the past for tougher enemies. NOPE.

Another 15 minutes of two players running circles around her, and the other bombarding her with cannon balls. We hit her plenty of times but the first and only indication that she was actually taking damage was her stopping to eat some food. For all we know she healed back to full and the fight dragged on.

My crew were getting very fed up with the mission at this point, no fight should drag on this long. We each died 5-6 times, we killed about 100 skeletons and Briggsy was not slowing down.

Then randomly, the player firing the cannon called out that an enemy player had boarded the ship, this random player didn't have a ship anywhere to be found, and decided it was his sole mission to interrupt our Tall Tale.

They killed our gunner, looted our food barrel, and burned the ship down.
My crew had had enough and quit the game, annoyed that the mission took so long and had no way of completing it.

We googled after the fact to see if we had missed something... apparently Briggsy is a Gold Skeleton and would have rusted in the water. It would have been nice if the game had given us any indication of this, she doesn't look gold, she doesn't make the gold skeleton 'clink' sound when hurt.

We also found other players complaining about fighting her taking too long.

    MY SUGGESTIONS:
Please Rare, consider fixing this encounter

    • Give any sort of health indication for spongy enemies.
Not a health bar, have parts of the Armour break off, or tear the clothing, have her look weaker somehow.
    • Indicate the type of enemy so we can find their weakness
Sound clues, or visual clues. Have her say "I hate sea water, makes my joints creek!" mid combat.
    • Reduce Briggsy's hit points.
She clearly has way too much health for a 3 player crew, no combat should take an hour of grinding, even using the ship cannons, and not managing to hurt her.

I love playing SoT, but unfortunately things like this keep getting my crew frustrated with the game and I'm worried they won't keep playing with me.

  • Sounds like a glitch to me. I solo her in 2 minutes by just shooting her with the harpoon.

  • Unfortunately, yes, the scaling is a bit severe on ships bigger than a sloop. Brig and Galleon can take a long time.

So the general advice is to do any of the Tall Tale boss encounters on a sloop if possible, it's a lot quicker. On a sloop, you can kill Briggsy in less than 2 mins.

  • As previously stated, scaling hits boss health hard. When I did the boss fights, I usually was a) by myself b) grabbed three kegs and blew Briggsy and Graymarrow sky high. I did once do the Gold Hoarder in a brig, and it took absolute ages. Exact opposite of Ashen Lords, or at least what they used to be.

  • Thanks guys, yeah I'll have to solo her so my crew can continue playing the Tall Tales.

I want to play this cooperative adventure game with my crew, not on my own though. It's no fun if every Tall Tale boss can't be done with a crew.

    I hope Rare fixes this.

  • Like some others have said; the scaling is extremely broken. If you are on a sloop you can kill Briggsy within a minute and if you are on a Galleon it takes atleast 20+ minutes.

  • We just did it today and it took us around 60 Minutes to kill while it resetted after 15 minutes Brigsy, we used up 150 cannonballs, and shot at her 50 Minutes with Snipers. This is totally garbage.

  • So we didn’t quite have this issue, me and one other player killed her in maybe two minutes with cannon shots. But, as we were loading loot I luckily spotted another player swimming toward our ship. I jumped on board and got away before he could board us. I sailed around the island to see where he could have come from and there was no ship there. I have been confused by this until I read your post. I think people are intentionally hiding there to ruin people’s game when they are trying to do a tall tale. It’s this kind of thing that ruins the game. There really needs to be a pve toggle.

  • Thanks for the warning! We've been just getting started on the tall tales, and we've already run into a lot of people flying reaper flags that seem to be patrolling a bunch of the islands where the quests go. I was looking forward to doing the story, but I guess we'll have to watch out for that.

  • @thebirminator First of all the unvoluntary PvP is what gives you the thrills, when foreing sails appear. And 2ndly you probably did it with a shallop, the bug is related to the brig.

Lol there really doesnt need to be a PVE toggle.
The pvp makes the game fun.

Dont forget you have tall tale voyages and regukar voyages you can run at the same time.
What would stop you keeping this pve toggle on all the time?

With respect, pve and pvp is pretty balanced and neutral hence pvevp.
If you favor one over the other you do so at the expense of half of the community that enjoy the part you dislike.

I would uninstall this game if you couldn't kill players. Ive got all my cosmetics i need, ive killed every pve enemy so players are all thats new to kill.

  • @thebirminator I doubt
they were hiding on the island. Most likely they sailed by about 1 square to half a square away and swam to your ship..Its called tucking and it's quite popular..When ever I'm playing with a crew I will opt to stay on the boat when we're doing vaults forts etc etc to guard agai st this very tactic...If u let a ship get within visual range without someone on deck guarding the boat Its your own fault u got robbed..Tucking is actually a very fun way to play..Nothing gets the heart pounds g harder than sneaking on a boat and literally hiding right under they're noses.. If u ever have a random banana catch fire on your stove Best bet u were visited by yours truly;D

I laughed at this point. Self discovery is point of trial and error. You need everything to be handed to you?
