Add a ping function for Adventure/Arena teams.

  • Hey there,

I'm a moderate SoT player that would like to suggest adding a ping feature. I'm not sure if this has been suggested before, but it would be nice to communicate to teammates more effectively with pings, such as to ping: enemy ships, visible islands, chests, treasure, and most things that are interactive. The best course of action might be ephemeral pings that go away after 7-10 seconds, but it would help a lot with navigation and communication, especially on console.

Let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

  • @whomst9000 go back to fortnite.

  • @rtl-saint Fortnite is disgusting—I'm merely a needy SoT player lol

  • @whomst9000 then why u asking for things inside fortnite?

  • @whomst9000 something very useless.... there is already some form of communication ingame.

  • @rtl-saint Fortnite didn't invent pings... :l

  • @whomst9000 what game first used them?

  • @rtl-saint portal2 used it way before fortnite lol and thats just of the top of my head

As for OP i dont really see the need for them, nor them working in this game it would be really immersion breaking in my eyes as there would be some magic digital pointer being placed somewhere

  • @callmebackdraft ok thats fine, you are asking a function excactly like fortnite in a pvp game............

  • @rtl-saint I don't know who invented the ping system, but it's in some resident evil games, Left 4 Dead, League of Legends, Dota, lots of RTS games, and so on.

It's an accessibility feature that's nice for people that aren't willing to communicate on voice or via text because of console usage. There are fast-paced, intense moments where pings would be much more useful—in battle, hoard quests, storms—I'm sure there are some other reasons why it might be beneficial.

Just a mere suggestion, not trying to rip off of other games' unique mechanics, but this isn't a new system nor is it unique to Fortnite.

  • @rtl-saint im not asking for anything....

I am actually against it, like i stated in my post.

But instead of just strawmanning it to “fortnite”, I let you know that “pinging” has been in gaming a long time (portal 2 released in 2011) and like i said that was just one game off the top of my head, there have been more AND i also detailed as to why i wouldn’t see it fit into sot instead of just saying “go back to fortnite”.

  • @callmebackdraft Oh this has been brought up before, can you link me to the OG thread? I'd like to read. Thank you :)

you ok up there man? there is no post that you made saying against it. And it really seems i poked a hornets nest with all these diehards out here yelling at me.

  • @whomst9000 not as far as i am aware, i dont really understand where you got that from.

I just stated that pinging was not something fortnite invented nor implemented first by saying portal 2 had the same feature.

Like i said, i dont think it is a feature sot needs nor does it fit with sot’s theming and thats why i wouldnt want it in the game.

  • @rtl-saint dude, im not yelling at you, read my original post here it says and i quote:

  • @callmebackdraft My bad, I misunderstood. By original post, I thought you meant there was a separate thread that discussed this topic lol.

I understand where you're coming from about the thematics of the game, but don't you think other players might benefit from a waypoint/ping system?

  • @whomst9000 there is a multitude of communicayion options in the game already, which work on all systems

    • microphone
    • keyboard
    • quick chat/response radial
  • @whomst9000
If I'm being judicious in my application on pinging here, it'd potentially become another annoying spam article that now is applied to me in a more visual manner than verbal or in text format. Additionally, I do love the minimalistic UI of SoT.

    • I believe that there is room for better "spotting" for loot. It's hard to find it sometimes if you weren't near the spot something sunk to get the loot. It has happened many times when I sink skeleton galleons and because I'm trying to stay safe and alive, I'm below deck and somewhat far from them.

We do have plenty of things to ping and point out things of interest. As was stated above me.

However, in the custom server lobby that is being worked on, I could see it working out quite well. As the custom server will make use of more specific content. Only Naval, Only Firebombs, Last Ship Standing, PvE events, etc. Since those are likely to keep players who know each other close, they aren't likely to abuse the communications that a visual cue could give.

  • A ping system would take away from socializing with your crew. Use your words, your text, your compass, etc. There's a lot of things SoT could do like other games, but doesn't, because Rare wants to maintain immersion and socializing and figuring things out on your own rather than things simply being pointed out to you by the game itself.

  • On galleon, 4 pirates all Pinging something just to point out certain objects...at the same time....
Mainly those who dont have mics vs the one pirate who does and it just be annoying..

You seem real keen on dying on this Fortnite hill. Fortnite did not invent the ping system, and this just seems like an unnecessarily jaded attitude towards a suggestion.

  • There is a ping system:

    The compass and your voice:

There's a ship on the horizon north by northeast
The chest is on the hill on the north side of the island by the red plant by the camp.

    etc.

  • i realy dislike the aproach of many players - annoying wants, really.

  • I quite like ping systems for multiplayer games like Apex that provide tactical feedback. That being said, I don't want it in SoTs. Why you may ask? Due to the nature of a limited HUD experience. What I like about this game is that it substitutes actual HUD like features with physical tools. Things like a compass rather than a HUD equivalent, as well as a physical map instead of a mini-map. I usually don't like the term, but it feels rather immersive.

To add a somewhat related suggestion to the topic, I'd just request a tool that facilitates what is being requested. Marking spots can be quite easy if we had something like a Flare-gun. We seem to be long overdue for a new tool in our arsenal. Just ensure the flare can't deal damage, doesn't start fires, and lingers in the air for 30 seconds or something.

  • @mferr11 seems like i really poked a hornets nest
