Ive encountered only 1 and i play nearly every day for at least 3 hours.
How do i find them?
I honestly think i have more chance finding the shrouded ghost at this rate.
Are ancient skeletons still in the game?
Well, Sir , the last one we encountered is somewhat a month ago , i have no knowledge about this precisely but i don't think they have been taken out ... Allthough i don't play solely Sea of Thieves to encounter and kill them , it's always a jump of Joy when i hear that strange goldrinkling sound...
Over the years ,our crew and me have banked 14 of them and i've missed two because i was startled and fell off a rock in all my excitement... Don't know if this helps ,but , the most i have encountered were the smaller islands , but i've also found them on the big whoppers of islands ...
So i wish you luck , just play and the less you think about them , maybe the more luck you get that one wakes up and crawls out of the ground right behind yer back...
I've found about 30 in the year I've played
I find less now only because I leave the ship a lot less now
it's random they will show themselves only when you win the luck of the draw.
Only 2 things you can really do to help yourself here. Spend a lot of time hopping islands and stick to open areas so when you do luck out you don't lose them.
I've lost about 7-8 just because I was in heavily obstructed areas and never found them. Stick to beaches, open areas, and limit the possibility of them spawning in a hard to search places

i think they are just like the ghost hard to find or don't exist
I killed one about five days ago on the east slope of Plunder Valley just above the wreck. Ka-Ching!!
@daringclarky in all my time I have encountered 3 in total, one was just a couple of days ago. The issue is that they spawn on islands and my entire style is to minimize my time on islands... I am a pirate after all. Like if you expect ever 3 hours of play to get one... than you are way more lucky than I am.
@captain-coel Ive only ever seen one. Perhaps they just spawn way less frequently for solo players like myself.

They are still in the game but I feel like their spawn rate may have decreased just a bit.
I used to farm them. I was able to find one per farming session. My chances were roughly 1 in 3. I would have approximately 2 or so sessions where my farming techniques didn’t produce one. Now my farming methods seem ineffective.
I actually found one doing the “3 Fresh Hens” challenge by capturing chickens on an Merchant Alliance mission. I found another one before that on an active skeleton fort. Other than that, I haven’t had much luck finding them
I encountered one a little while after the latest update came out, so I don't think they were taken out. I have encountered only two, one in Thieve's Haven and one in Crook's Hollow, both being big islands. As far as I know, there is know way to make them spawn or optimize your chances. I recommend watching a guide on ancient skeletons from Hitbotc, a SoT content creator on YouTube
@daringclarky Me and the crew ran into one yesterday, sadly we didn't get it because the person it appeared by is still fairly new and spent the first 10 seconds asking why is this skeleton running we asked what skelly he said "idk it's gold with a bag" we all began yelling for him to kill it, he paniced and it got away. RIP
i used to play a ton too when they first came out and never saw them. i have by this point found a few but this is the reason...
they spawn during events like tall tales or arena, even FOTD. this is where i have found many of mine i think. other than that you have to be on a single island for a long time to find one spawning. I as a player spend very little time on islands (efficiency is key to me) and much time sailing and fighting between islands. having to spend so much time on one island either makes you sit there and waste time doing nothing OR do some voyage that lets you spend a lot of time on one island like tall tales, Athena run of thieves haven, fotd, arena even for some reason seems to be a hotspot sometimes.
