PC Steam - Game not responding

  • The problem:
SoT stops working during gameplay or even when I'm in the menu. I don't receive an error, but the screen freezes and the game is listed as "not responding" in the 'task manager'. Note that the CPU-usage and memory never go past 50% when this happens. 'Solutions' I have tried will be listed at the bottom.

    PC specs:
    AMD Ryzen 5 2600 Six-Core, 3400 MHz
    Geforce GTX 1050 TI
    Windows 10
    Patriot Burst SSD

'Solutions' I have tried: (please note I have the Steam version)

    • Lowering everything to cursed and all resolutions
    • Windows Update
    • Geforce driver update (also tried rollback and complete clean install)
    • Verifying integrity files on Steam
    • Closing everything except SoT and never alt+tabbing
    • Disabling all overlay notifications on Steam and Windows
    • Disabling IPv6
    • Restarting router
    • Tried on both SSD and my HDD
    • DISM and /sfc scannow
    • Virus scanners and malware scanners
    • Turning on XblAuthManager, XblGameSave, XboxGipSvc and XboxNetApiSvc
    • Playing on a different account
    • SoT and all Xbox stuff to the firewall and app exceptions
    • Event viewer application log check (no errors)
    • Running the game as well as steam as admin

If you have any suggestions, anything at all, please post.

  • You could try checking the Event Viewer to see if it's spewing out any errors in the Application Log that might tell you what is happening.

  • @d3adst1ck

Great idea. Unfortunately it wasn't showing any errors in the application log at the time of the crashes. I've tried it five times. I also searched for "sotgame" and "thieves" in the search option, but no errors appeared in the logs. Do you have more ideas please?

  • At first I would assume a simple internet issue but you are not getting a connection error so that rules that out.

    -Uninstall the game
-Go to C:\Users\Username\Appdata\Local\Packages locate the SoT file and delete it.
-I would run CCleaner registry check and delete the registry files after uninstalling the game.
-Search for any other files related to SoT and delete
    -Restart Computer and Reinstall SoT
-Go to Microsoft app store and check for updates, update anything that has updates.
-When the game runs make sure it is in Full Screen mode, not in windowed.

    1. if it still doesn't work and you have an antivirus, other than windows defender, temporarily turn it off and see if the game runs fine while it is off.

Thanks so much for offering to help. I'm running the game on Steam.

I went to appdata local packages, but there were no SoT related files. However I did find local/temp/rare/crashlock.lck and local/athena/saved/config/windowsclient. This is something I had not deleted before.
Microsoft app updates were updated, but as I said I bought the game on Steam.
I have also tried turning the antivirus and firewall off before I loaded up Steam and started up the game but again crashes. I'll try the appdata and registry deletion thing. I'm so desperate :)

  • Still crashed. :(

I also notice it happens a lot of times I play for half an hour, then TAB and hit Events or Quests. But then again, it even happens sometimes when I'm still in the menu or just sailing. I was hoping to get some answers from the staff. You pay 40 euros and there's no customer service?

  • @cool0l0lz If you want to contact Rare, you need to use the support link in the site header. They don't often respond to forum posts.

I've googled 'sea of thieves freeze crash' and there are a number of very old threads on this forum about people experiencing this but it's with much different hardware or much older drivers so I'm not sure what your exact issue could be.

If you have anything overclocked you could try returning that to stock settings and see if that does anything.

Ye I've been googling in total for propably about 20 hours and no solution found. I've never overclocked my PC so that can't be it. I've also tried resetting my UEFI Bios settings, but still SoT crashes.

  • I have heard of people alt tabbing and having SoT crashing. Are you alt tabbing the game? If that is the case I would recommend simply hitting the windows key to get into other windows.

Your situation seems bazar to me, I assume it is a driver issue. I also have a 1050ti but I have had no issues. If you are using the geforce experience program try disabling it for SoT or disabling it all together.

The last thing I can think of is if you are playing with multiple monitors running, try running off of a single monitor and see if it crashes.

If you can make a change to your current setup and the game works, then you can pinpoint the problem and fix it. At this point I don't think the game is the culprit but a driver or hardware. However, if other games work with no problems it would be weird for SoT to have a problem due to a specific driver or hardware.

  • Also, what's your ram situation? Do you have enough ram to run the game and is your ram functioning properly?
