My mermaid is acting strange.

Sounds like it worked as intended. You aren’t on your ship and you scuttled. Your mermaid will appear.

Mermaids show up whenever you're very far from your ship. You scuttled, so your ship respawned at another island entirely, meaning the Mermaid appeared to give you the option to teleport back to your ship.

Mermaids are also the only counter to Tucking, since having one nearby means someone has stowed away on your ship, or is otherwise hiding nearby. If Mermaids didn't alert you that you're being stalked, the only other way you could check for Tuckers is to manually search the entire ship, and hope you know all the glitched spots that people can hide in.

If that's the case how come they do it sometimes and other times they don't? Because they used to swim away when you aren't in water and your ship is gone. I even tested it.

Did they nerf mermaids?
It's pretty annoying.

I really wish I could just slit their throats and cook them.

@daringclarky In my experience, they’ve always worked the same, aside from distance of mermaid spawn from player or ship. If yours disappeared while not on your ship at some point during your testing, then that may have been a bug or someone else’s mermaid and a coincidence that it disappeared while you boarded another ship.
