Hackers Within the sea of thieves

  • There is a good chance that coming into this, your assumption is that this post is going to complain about hacking within the game. But I assure you its quite the opposite.

This post is simply a question to anyone who knows better than I; Why are there not more hackers on the sea of thieves?

From my (very basic) understanding, the anticheat isnt really invasive like EAC or whatever the hell Valorant is running. It seems to be (mind you I have no idea what I'm talking about so I could be completely wrong) just a simple server-side validation of things such as position and health data.

It is my theory that the hitreg issues come, at least in part, from this serverside validation approach to hit registration. There is some footage of seemingly legit hacks scattered around the depths of Forms and Youtube, but it all appears to be recorded in the era before hitreg got really bad. I've never really run into someone on the seas that feel like they are using aim or wall hacks, and any modern footage on youtube (most of them titled something like "SEA OF THIEVES HAXOR EXPOSED!!!") as well as any instance of sus behavior can often very easily be described away as network desync, hitreg, or just straight up some noob being tucked on and not understanding what is happening to them.

Is there some system on top of the serverside validation at play that is keeping nerds with too much time on their hands from running around with wall, teleport, or aim hacks?

  • @icyyaoi probably a combination of several systems in place rather than a single one.

  • A company that is dedicated to getting rid of cheaters doesn't have a problem keeping the numbers low. You hit all the public programs and you take out a lot of casual cheating

In every scenario there will be a small group of people that are ahead of the prevention/bans. That will always exist, it'll be private and controlled. They will release junky versions for data stealing and money making purposes to the sacrificial lambs'

They are dedicated to keeping the game play as clean as they can and that's why cheating isn't game breaking or much of a problem.

Releasing exactly how they do it is like announcing on a loud speaker at a electronics store where all the cameras point and where the blind spots are

  • The biggest deterrent to cheaters for this game is probably that you can't get instant satisfaction from it as easily as you can in other games. In other games, you can load up a cheat and log in, join a lobby and start blasting people. In Sea of Thieves you need to get on your ship, sail around and look for people first. Compare the time required to get into combat in Sea of Thieves with something like COD: Warzone.

Aimbots also only help within a very close range, since characters do not render out very far. You can also be defeated pretty easily if you aren't very good at ship combat which can't be aided with cheats.

You might be more likely to find cheats in Arena because it's easier to log in and shoot people but they still have to deal with the ship sinking, other crew members and the generally slower pace of the game compared to arena/twitch shooters. In my experience you're not likely to find cheats in Arena very often either, if at all.

Cheaters get most of their fun from dominating or ruining the game for other players, which is harder to do in this game based on the way it's designed. That still won't stop you from getting called a cheater if you happen to kill someone or sink their ship.
