The brig is the worst solution imaginable to toxic players, and the fact that it's still in the game is an insult to every competent person in SoT

  • Myself and my friend just spent 3 hours in the game - the first 1 of which was spent sailing around gathering supplies, raising our emissary status, etc., and playing with a relatively decent fellow. When he dropped, another player joined.

    He wouldn't talk.
    He wouldn't respond.
    He wouldn't fight.
He kept setting fire to the ship.

We placed this player in the brig. And for the next TWO HOURS he sat there, occasionally sword-dashing or playing one of his instruments.

Why is this mechanic still in the game? Why is it that - in a cooperative, competitive setting that almost DEMANDS people work together - that you have included no means to jettison toxic players who are only present get their jollies by trolling others? Even if the brig is necessary to the game's design, why is it that it doesn't kick a person out of a group after a set amount of time spent therein?

I cannot tell you how stupid this is. I don't want to ALWAYS sail the sloop. I don't WANT to be antisocial - I actually do enjoy meeting and interacting with friendly people. But you put this freaking albatross around my neck, and the more times I run into this situation, the less and less I want to play.

I shouldn't have to nanny some 9-year-old who pilfered mommy's credit card - that shouldn't be anyone's job when booting up Sea of Thieves. And yet that is exactly what the solves-absolutely-nothing-"solution" that is the brig demands - that I tolerate the intolerable, or hide away solo/duo and never meet anyone.

This is a bad design, and that it remains in the game after three years is a DISGRACE.

  • @bjornthecold If you add the ability to kick players it opens up a lot of ways to troll. Just spent a few hours doing world events, or tons of voyages with a crew? Bye bye, they kicked you so their friend can join and get all the rep.

  • @BjornTheCold
I know it's extremely frustrating, getting one of those players in your crew, but as far as I know, there are currently no radical solutions to this problem.

Of course, kick option would make sense right? Majority of crew players could vote off this toxic teammate, but you can bet, soon there would be posts like: "My open crew kicked me after 4 hour session, so their friend could join.

I really feel like that dealing with toxic crewmate by surviving their toxic rant is much lesser evil than adding kick option. Always try to completely ignore them at first and get some video evidence, they'll eventually get bored and leave by themselves. If you engage them, you'll just fuel their determination to continue bullying you.

  • Just a question.

What happens when 1 crewmember is brigged and the other 2 leave the session/ quit the game?

  • Being able to kick people would be more abused than the current system and would lead to more in game injustice

Friends would kick people out after a lot of time was invested by the person getting kicked so other friends could benefit

It's better to have a system that is annoying but effective than one that completely destroys open crew

The solution is sell the loot and leave the game. Don't let ego get involved and waste your time or loot on someone annoying in the brig. Sell make a new game and move on.

  • @stundorn If the other players in a crew leave then the player in the brig will be released.

  • @foxdodge

    Thanks, stupid mechanic.

  • With the brig you can isolate problem players, but it cannot be abused to prevent players from collecting rewards. This is the least disruptive method possible. If there was the ability to kick, these forums would just be filled with complaints about getting kicked before turning in a mega loot haul and not getting anything, which is arguable worse than just having an AFK/brigged player.

If someone is going to sit in the brig and be useless, finish up what you're doing and reform on a new ship and server. The only reason they hang around for so long is because they know people are reluctant to abandon the ship/server so they can AFK for free stuff.

  • Not that I'm encouraging this idea but on a gally I use to turn them into pet fish. Leave just enough space so if he jumped he could get air. Or be forced to die over and over. all else fails plan on leaving and blow up the ship with him in it and have a good laugh yourself
