Match Making Rating

  • I'm pirate legend and I play with another player who probably deserves the title, but hasn't completed the grind yet.

    We've practiced purposefully, created and memorized tactics and strategies, created game plans and "plays" to run, worked on communication and found the most optimal solution to most things in the game, including placing your treasure in the "correct" spot on the different ship types for various purposes and reasons.

    It's safe to say that we are pretty dang good at the game.

    Now, when we play it IS possible for other crews to interact with us outside of PvP, but we're super fidgety and will initiate combat at the slightest flinch. And once it starts, it doesn't stop.

    Now, I enjoy a good stomping here and there, as in we've defeated an opposing team with little or no effort. I would say that I might even prefer it that way because it's, at least, proof that my practice did some good. But, I need to see some one who can put up a fight every now and then. I know they are out there, I just don't seem to ever get matched with them.

    Is there a match making rating? If so, is it working correctly? Is it just random what server you join? Does it pay attention to the skill level of the players it's merging together at all? If so, how?

    Or... am I just "Eve Online" good at taking the fights I can win and avoiding the fights I can't?

    I'm interested in knowing how the server decides to merge players together and if this should be balanced.

    People looking to play get put in spots that are open on a random server with an opening it's that simple

    that is why server hopping is such a thing. It's random not segregated

    There is no skill based matchmaking. It has been asked for... Especially for Arena.

    Rare mentioned a while back that they were looking at trying to implement it in Arena... But so far, nothing.

    The Arena population would probably need to grow before it would be feasible.

    There is no matchmaking mmr system or anything like that. The developers want their game to be one where no matter what level you are you will be able to match with anybody. There is no system in place that counts how many ships you've sunk or how many players you've killed or anything like that. It's random.

    I think @BurnBacon was talking how there's no way to define what skill is, and so there is no matchmaking system for that. As for you trying to understand merging better I am that way too, I like to find every exploit I can use and use it to the fullest advantage. I found glitches / game exploits like taking chests/skulls/merchant crates with you on the mermaid, having an infinite inventory and being able to hold an infinite amount of cannonballs, food, and planks. Quickcarrying (juggling), being able to set sail in a solo galleon /solo sloop in arena and such. But I digress. There is no way to merge into particular servers to find athena missions or anything like that. Your only hope is to server hop and find an emissary on the table.

    Now merging servers does have a reason and isn't RNG. A server will merge with another if there is only 1 person left. If there are 2 ships in a server the server will not merge, but once there is only 1 ship left, it merges. Unless you can find something to do with that information, there's no way to manipulate it to server merge you into a specific server unfortunately.

    Rare has stated that the server will merge you dynamically to attempt to keep your rate of encountering other player ships to 15 to 30 minutes. If more time than that elapses without ever encountering a player crew the server merges so one is in the horizon somewhere.

    So, theoretically if I hide at thieves haven (where the athenas run is) and avoid players I would get merged into another ship near thieves haven which naturally has a higher chance of being a crew doing a thieves haven run than being merged at any other island.

    Like I said though, in practice it didnt seem to work. But, I'm wondering if it did work, just not enough to give me desired results.

    Does that trigger anything in any ones mind?

    You'd be way better off finding fort of the damned games or checking for athena emissaries on servers rather than squatting on thieves haven for 300 years waiting for a thieves haven crew and dealing with server merges

    When emissaries and thieves haven runs first started it was common to find them sailing around but they are rare now. You'd be better off PVEing your athena items for commendations and sticking to FOTD athena steals for whatever else you got in your mind

    You're far more likely to be server-merged while anchored, and to my knowledge, you will never be server-merged while maintaining an alliance. Furthermore, I was once told, but was never able to confirm that, if you see a beam of light from either a Reaper's chest or bounty, that it means there are a minimum of 3 crews on the server, because supposedly they don't spawn with fewer. Please keep in mind that this is conjecture.

    I think you are correct. But on to my other point, I understand that we can interact any way we want. But sometimes I don't think it's fair when some one brand new gets merged into me who is a pirate legend currently on a treasure stealing rampage.

    I don't know if I would change it, because I have just as much chance as showing that new guy a great time as I do deleting him from the ocean. Those other experiences are valuable too.

    I think you are correct. But on to my other point, I understand that we can interact any way we want. But sometimes I don't think it's fair when some one brand new gets merged into me who is a pirate legend currently on a treasure stealing rampage.

    that's exactly what makes this game so fair

    we are all on an equal foundation no matter our experience or skill, Our weapons are the same our ships are the same and we are all subjected to constant threats by each other and by circumstances surrounding us and we spawn in with any and all experience and play types

    there are no safety nets for the new and inexperienced and there are no guarantees for the veterans
