How to prevent people from being able to run forever

  • As many people know there are 2 types of people, those who run and those who turn and fight. Often times when people run they r able to prolong the chase for hours on end, annoying all parties involved. An idea that I have thought of to help prevent this or at least make it quicker is that sails will slowly deteriorate/tear over time from sailing. As your sails deteriorate they will be less effective and in turn you will travel slower. In order to repair sails you must stop at an outpost, raise sails and then go to the ship lady to get new sails. They will not cost anything but you will then have to go back onto your boat and go to the sail length cleat where you can replace the sail, taking 5 seconds as an example. Whatever size boat you are sailing will determine how many sails you need to replace (Galleon 3, brig 2 and sloop 1). Same as any action on the boat if there are multiple people doing it it will go faster, and also take longer for bigger ships same as adjusting sail direction. The speed at which the sails deteriorate depends on how vigorously you are sailing. A storm for example will significantly speed up the process and cause you to slow down really quick. Your sails will never fully fall apart allowing people to make it to an outpost to refresh their sails, preventing people from becoming stranded with no sails. This is just an idea to create a more realistic experience in the sea of thieves and add more strategy/planning in order to succeed. It will keep people on their toes and force them to think ahead.

  • @goldenpork27 If you don't wish to chase people for hours, don't!

Retreating or running is a perfectly valid strategy for those that don't wish to fight or for those that want to protect their loot.

If you are chasing, it only lasts as long as you are willing to chase. If you get annoyed at chasing people, then don't chase.

    Fixed it for you.

If you don't chase forever, they won't run forever.

  • Fight or flight. It’s great the way it is.

Sometimes you can catch them with excellent sailing. Sometimes they get away.

    It’s like Animal Planet

  • @triheadedmonkey Words to live by. Not that I’m going to live by them but....still

  • @triheadedmonkey is right. If you do not want to run for ever then dont chase, it is literally that simple.

  • Learn to ambush better.

I'm rarely caught unless it's a total ambush. Leave people who don't want to fight alone if you don't want to play chase me to the red.

  • So basically chain shot.

  • So with this mechanic the person running will slow down and so will the person chasing and then youre right back to where you started....

  • as very few people know (apparently) this is a pvp AND pve game you are entitled to both but not forced to do both so lets try not to

This is a pretty good point.

If you are close enough, you can chainshot the mast/s and prevent/limit the ability to get away quicker than you can catch.

If you are not close enough, then it is back to being a case of how long are you willing to chase and/or how confident you are in out sailing them to catch them.

If I have nothing on the table and time on my hands, I have no problem leading people on a chase.

I know any loot I may have is not mine until I turn it in but also, the loot is not the other crews until they turn it in, so if they can't get it, it is not theirs either!

No one is obliged to turn and surrender loot. Capture it or leave it.

The amount of time it takes is often your decision.

  • Chase or dont the choice is yours!
You may chase someone for an hour to only find they just turned in all their loot.
    Its a risk reward.
Theres too many calls for this game to be further streamlined than it already is.
Imho its a pirate game, that already caters far too much to the casual audience.
It was not uncommon for pirate hunters to chase ships for days in the 1700's.

  • @triheadedmonkey I know that is a good point and I agree u don’t have to chase but I just thought I would throw it out there

  • The best way to not have a prolonged chase is to know when to take advantage of the mistakes the chased ship makes if you engage and to know how to position yourself ahead of time to prevent the chase in the first place based on the ship you are sailing at the time.

If you are the ship being chased you can either drop off what you need along the way when you get the opportunity then juke the chasing ship to decoy them and change sessions.

Majority of the time if I am the chased ship its because it's a tactical retreat to get more supplies and to waste the time of any toxic crew that I encounter until I take it into the red just to see how much salt I can mine from them if they are that determined to waste said time.

If I am the chasing ship I will be waiting for the chased ship to make a mistake that I can take advantage on else if I see a better target I will break off and go for that other one instead to give the ship I was just chasing a false air of relief so that I can track them for when I come back at them at a better angle.

My first mate and I use psychological warfare and put the art of war into practice when we sail.
