Revised Athena Voyages and PL Content

  • I have to admit, I still wouldn't mind seeing the Athena Voyages revised wholesale. I'd honestly like to see both existing options removed, since one is just a big collection of the original 3 Faction Voyages, and the other is a glorified Gold Hoarder "X Marks the Spot" Voyage only. I'd rather see the Voyages for Athena's Fortune be unique activities. Maybe something along these lines as a basis to get ideas flowing:

    • Basic Voyage: Legendary Shipwrecks - Legends are sent to scour a series of Shipwrecks for Athena Loot. Maybe to make these wrecks unique the Captain Quarters are actually locked shut, and we have to locate a Key within the wreckage (along with gathering some of the more basic grade Loot items like Relics, Voyages, etc. from within the hull), and getting in the Quarters finally we would get a Map Fragment that guides us to another Shipwreck where we do similar (though these don't point to Islands, but rather to points in the ocean, and it is unlabeled so we need to better understand the world layout), until the last Shipwreck where we acquire the Chest of Legends. This way things feel a bit different than previous Company Voyages when you first get to Pirate Legend (this would replace the existing Combo Voyage).

    • Upgraded Voyage: Ritual of Legends - Legends are tasked, after gaining some Rank in the Faction like the standard Factions and Secondary Voyages, with tracking down a series of strange items (probably new things) that we then need to take to a randomly selected location where there will be an altar of some kind. The items will need to be placed in some specific configuration, and there will be clues around the location to help solve the proper placement. Once the objects have been placed correctly, we have to do some kind of action (maybe fill a basin with sea water we can haul in buckets), and then a secondary action to complete the Ritual (maybe we need to slam a Grog and vomit into the basin of water). Doing this will summon some kind of major boss battle who will drop some kind of special new Loot (or a Map to it) that is worth a good bit. The steps of the Ritual and the nature of the Boss fight are up for debate, but this would also give us something that at least feels a little different. It is also a slightly more interesting way of "Combining Everything Before" in that you have a Gather/Battle/Dig quest that is all tied together instead of being disparate parts. Perhaps this could be where we bring in the hostile Merfolk and make use of those underwater altars around the map, which could give it a further distinct feel while actually kind of being a collection of the original tasks we did to get here.

This seems like it could help to build upon the Lore of the game, give us some slightly new gameplay, and allow Athena's Fortune to actually feel like something at least a little different from the other Factions in the Sea of Thieves, a personality all of its own. One could be seen (the initial Voyage) as helping do your part to keep Athena's Fortune well supplied (as well as tracking down the crates of Legendary Voyages that we then actually do as the Secondary Voyages - the Ritual, a task truly meant for a Legend).

That covers the base bit of the Faction (though, I do like the thread going right now about adding an Ancient Amethyst as a Legend Gem to the game that could replace the standard Gems where we encounter those, which in this revised version would mainly be the Shipwrecks). Next, we should get some other special stuff for Legends to have access to. Such as Legendary Tales (the Legend side of the Tall Tale coin).

Legendary Tales should be more like the Shores of Gold Tales, in that they need to be done in a particular order because I think there should be some deep connection to the tasks. These Tales should be centered around binding Flameheart once again (which then means the Sea of Thieves exists in a perpetual loop of Legends binding Flameheart, newbie Pirates being tricked into releasing him, rinse and repeat - so all the world events can keep on rocking cause they will always make sense being there in this context, Flameheart is an ever recurring threat). Now, to make these unique and special I think that first of all, the very first one you initiate of course starts in the Legend Hideout with the Pirate Lord. And where do these Tales take place, the Sea of the Damned. This is where we finally get to set sail from the Legend Hideout, but it requires that we Scuttle out Ship to bring it in (in this way it isn't a viable option to try and protect Loot, and it means you must start your Voyage with Default Supplies). We might need a few other safety catches, for instance the option to bring your Ship in requires you to have the Tale started already (unlocks a special Trigger system on the Dock) so we can prevent multiple Ships trying to do this at the exact same time. I'd also give a timer to how long a Ship can just sit in the Legend Hideout (maybe it always touches bottom in here so it will be force despawned if you don't get going quickly). We do a series of Voyages both on the Sea of Thieves and Sea of the Damned, with the final Tale in the series being the actual battle with and defeat of (hopefully) Flameheart.

This would make getting to Pirate Legend something truly fresh, giving the whole experience a shot in the arm after loads of grinding away on the core Factions (which is something many players might need by this point). Of course, all of this could be experienced by non-Legends by simply being in a Crew with a Legend (much like it is now) so we maintain the mantra of all can sail together regardless of how long they have played (which is important). Of course we could stand to have some new Cosmetics dropped on the Legend Hideout stores so we have some more fun options with that and some more Gold sink available once we get to that threshold (or for those of us already at it).

What needs to happen is they make this a major focus for a large scale update, for lack of a better term Legends Rising. This update would be the big end game refresh where we, at one time, drop the following:

    • Revised Legendary Voyages (as above)
    • Legendary Tales 1-9, The Binding of Flameheart (as above)
    • Legendary Cosmetic Delivery, probably two full sets of Clothing and Ships, maybe a Costume to start it off with high price tags
    • Legendary Curse, Revenant curse which is the glowing eyes the Mysterious Stranger has (this should be able to be unlocked at the end of the Tales and require being a Legend)

In this instance I do think it is one of the few spots where cutting some content would be for the best, so that it can be replaced with something actually unique. At this point I would also, personally, see this as something of a priority for Rare, as I feel we have gotten to a point that the world for new players is fairly solid finally. They have 5 Factions they can work with that are each unique (6 if we count the Sea Dogs, and we should since they can count towards Legend progress). Of those Factions, all the ones which offer Voyages (3 of them) have 2 different Voyage types that are unique and centered around a common theme (get treasure, kill things, gather/deliver goods). They have access to Tall Tales for story driven adventures. They have the Bilge Rats for doing assorted miscellaneous tasks and hunting Easter Eggs. They have multiple full sets of Cosmetics to select from. As such, the time is certainly upon us, nearly 3 years since launch, to get a better focus on the end game side of the coin as more and more pirates reach that milestone.

That's all, there is loads of room for improvement here, but this conversation thread needs to get going and with some good baseline of what can potentially be done to get us where we should be shooting towards. Discuss.

  • What I hate about this forum is that useless threads like PvE servers get all the attention and threads that actually seek to do something get no attention. I made a thread on new Arena modes and a great majority of the posts on it are mine.
This is a really good suggestion to change the monotony of Athena voyages.

  • @baronbrr mate your telling me! I'm not saying all my ideas are gold but I'll try and make a detailed voyage type and try to flesh it out as much as possible but ill be lucky to get more than 3 up votes where as the "sword needs to change" threads keep getting bumped for months.

I wish feedback was separate from suggestions

  • @redeyesith a key to a shiprweck you say, hmmm that sound awfully familiar to one of my most recent topics ;)

Your idea of newbies releasing flameheart and legends binding him is pretty awesome amd would work quite well i think.

I missed that, but I suppose great minds think alike or something along those lines. But, I suspect like you, it just seemed to make sense to put together a couple pieces we already have in place for something a little more new.

It seems like a logical gameplay loop to me, really, and feels like it ties up a lot of what is going on in Sea of Thieves in a way that helps make everything being there make sense in some grand way.

  • These are the type of threads I come here for.

Sadly agree that these threads don’t get enough attention.

Think this is a nice idea, no doubt the Athena quests could be much better.

Loving the ‘Find key to unlock shipwreck captains room’ idea. Love the idea of using shipwrecks as part of a voyage in general.

And I wished we had more people gathering around fleshing out these concepts. Keeping existing game mechanics and balancing at the heart of what we’re doing, whilst sometimes daring to imagine new things that could realistically be implemented.

  • Appreciate that. Admittedly I'm pretty guilty of having these kinds of ideas and often just dropping them as replies in other threads. I'd been meaning to make this one for awhile now, and finally got around to it. Of course, as you note, I tend to find that things I post don't get a whole lot of traction compared to the grumbling around here, but I suspect a lot of that is a coordinated effort to keep this place flooded with those kinds of comments.

In the end, I kind of just want Athena's Fortune to feel unique in some ways, rather than just a collection of more of the exact same stuff with no changes to it. And I really do think it is high time they start being concerned about this area of the game. As we approach 3 Years more pirates than ever have obtained that heft title and could use a nice shot in the arm to get the blood pumping again.

  • No kidding. The increase to Lvl 75 for GH, OOS and MA, plus the introduction of Emissary system, means that reaching Lvl 50 on those three factions to achieve PL has become an easier grind than it once was.

Rare didn’t want to lock too much content away for PLs because it spoils balance for new starters and people with less time. I get it.

By having a voyage which is just a mixture of what you can already do, nobody is getting any advantage of getting to PL earlier than others.

But balancing in a way has spoilt end-game exclusivities and content.

I play SoT now because I want to complete all of the achievements. I sure don’t play for the end-game content.

  • @BaronBrr / @sailorkek

huge mood, I posted a really detailed Arena thread a month or two back and it next to zero traction.

on topic though, I really like this. Athena voyages need way more going for them that just the same three voyages people have been doing since day one. The part boss fight, part treasure hunt is great, and I've always liked the idea of Shipwrecks having a bit more going on with them.

  • The game did admittedly need fleshing out early on. But Rare has held true to the proper game as a service model and kept plugging more and more into the game as time has gone. And things have changed a lot.

In the early days it was quite the task to get to Legend. This was clearly intended due to the lack of content available once you made it to that point. They needed that buffer to give them time to pad out the core gameplay loop with more and more content. They've done a wonderful job at this as well, despite it taking some time to get where we are.

And in part, that is why I brought this thread up, as I am encouraged by recent changes that have made it all the easier to achieve the title of Pirate Legend means that we might be gearing up soon for at least a temporary shift in focus to this end game experience. They seem to be trying to drive more players to this place.

I personally think it would be good for them to take some time with this though and do it right, and strong.

Suddenly, just like that, you've got a whole new end game experience that will take a little bit to work itself to being stale right away (since if nothing else the new Tales would take at least a bit of time to complete for most people). I don't think it would be wrong, at this point, to do an update exclusively focused on the Legend players since we have had plenty of them with no focus on those players over the years since release.

Anyways, if anyone has some ideas on how some of this could be further fleshed out - or if there are some other ideas for possible Voyages that could be used to replace the existing ones I would love to hear them and keep this thread rolling. Who knows, maybe Rare even snags some of the ideas.

  • @redeyesith I like how Rare have focused on creating a new type of voyage for each faction.

MA was a long time ago but Cargo Runs were a great addition. I hope they still create a further type of voyage so the selection of 3 has a unique type per slot.

OOS has the ghost ship battling.

    GH has the vaults.

I’m hopimg Athena Run of Thieves Haven is not the equivalent to an alternative PL voyage, I’m hoping there are newer voyage styles coming for PLs.

I’ll have a think about what I feel could be added as a voyage type, and hope to keep the thread rolling with good ideas bouncing around.

Maybe rare has to just give in to it... give people the ability to go solo PvE servers and give them 25% payment of the loot they cash in. I do understand people who're asking for PvE servers... but I also believe people will get bored quickly, as there is no danger around and it will get a boring experience... Maybe people just have to find out themselves. Atleast the forums will have less PvE barnarcle topics ^^

Now about content: Yes the Athena voyage is boring, as you're just doing the regular faction stuff to get 1 chest (or grind Athena runs which are kinda boring, but rewarding). Also the commendations are super grindy... like kill 500 npc ships while being PL... I mean, come on.... You're eventually get there, but it will take ages, or you will have to spend every night gaming tracking down those stupid ghost ships (fail...)

I remember there being a video about underwater life... like mermaids... Then the mermaid statues came (which sucked hard, lol...)... but I still believe there will be an underwater update in the future. We just have to wait for it to happen, but I don't see why mermaids wouldn't get into the game ;)

Looking forward to what you might add to the thread.

I tweaked the OP a bit and added in the details about the potential update this could all be tied to since it seemed relevant to do so.

  • @redeyesith
Wow already 12 days old and I only found this because you mentioned it in another post.
Making Athena special with unique end game content would be really cool.
Its late for me right now... I will read all of this tomorrow and maybe I have something to add.
    Cheers

  • So one of the things I was thinking of, in regards to implementation of some of this, would be that the Legendary Shipwrecks would be spawned in without birds circling above them. This serves two purposes: as the ships are more exposed than many other objectives this would help prevent other players from easily stumbling on to them, and it leans in to the idea of Legends needing to have a better understanding of the world in which they exist to just know based on the clues provided where in the Sea they need to dive down. This could be further protected by only actually spawning the Wreck in once the Crew with the Voyage gets within a certain distance of it.

I'd probably also not have the Clue be a "X Marks the Spot Map" nor would I have it be a Riddle. Rather, it would be something more like a Ships Log that was recovered in one of the many Legendary Voyage Crates we've been turning in. We would need to use this to assess the route they would have been taking, and maybe investigate Islands, Seaposts, and Outposts along the route to get an idea of where it actually went down. Potentially finding various signs of their presence along the way, or confirming with various NPCs if they saw the crew or not (in this way we sort out where they were last seen, and where they never made it to, and can know that the Wreck is always going to be half way between those two locations).

This feels like it would be a slightly more unique approach to the whole presentation of the process. Which is kinda the whole point of revising the Athena Voyage offerings.

  • @redeyesith Which means that the whole treasure huting will expand from one island to a broad body of sea, and you have to be a detective (like playing tall tales) to solve much enigmatic voyage. That's what I comprehend but may miss some details.

What I thought while reading this article is that Athena's Fortune may give semi-raids or semi-tales voyages just as OOS requests fleet fights or GH requests vaults keys. Some boss fights or shipwreck searches included in AF voyages may imply that PLs are dealing with big deals different from other factions since they are big in the SoT. It is definitely necessary that the tasks in the AF voyages should contain all the digging, fighting, and delivering skills.

I say some personal gibberish in here, but overall I advocate your ideas entirely.
