Steam Linking of Games = Buying a Game Twice = Why?

  • It may not matter to some, but it does to others of us. Without the game unlocked on Steam we cannot obtain the associated achievements. There are other caveats we miss out on as well.

I understand it's technically a different platform when purchasing on Steam rather than the Windows Store. However, those of us that did support the game on PC by buying it on the Windows Store are kind of getting the shaft here... If I would have waited and then purchased on Steam there would be no issue. Now I would have to buy the game twice just for it be launched by Steam then link to my MS account...pre dumb right? It's just one extra step that was added and MS wants me to pay $40 for it lol...

Why is Xbox taking the stance that we would have to buy the game again? Most recent business moves by Xbox have been very smart this isn't one of them.

  • Which other stores allow you to unlock games on Steam? I know EA's Origin does not, because I have nearly all the battlefield titles there and they are not unlocked on Steam. Same with Ubisofts uPlay.

  • @label07 you already answered your own question, its a different store.

  • @d3adst1ck
It's an industry wide problem. Companies try their own launchers and they have little success on PC so they then migrate their games over to Steam where most (including myself) gather.

I would be okay with a $5-10 fee to unlock on Steam (even thought it should be free and a thank you to the supporters that got the game on the Windows Store), but having to RE-BUY the game is ridiculous.

  • @label07 don't rebuy it then?

  • achievements isn't everything

and it certainly is not worth spending another 40 bucks on

    i don't understand achievement obsessions

  • @jollyolsteamed OCD. You do you and I'll do me. There are plenty others that I'm sure share my sentiment.

  • @label07 oh...wow...you mean when I buy a game on XBox and I don't get a free version, or a discount version on PS4 or whatever, I can be angry about it? Are you nuts?
You bought the game twice, buying it twice means pay twice...that's how it is...

  • @label07

I've bought Minecraft on Windows 10, Java, Playstore and Apple store. 4 times in all... Would you recommend I give Mojang a piece of my mind? How dare they make me buy it all those times...

Different platforms, that is not applicable to the scenario I put forth.

Yes. Only when applicable when it's in regards to the same platform...You bought Win10 version. Then Steam version comes out, it's on the same platform (PC) but if you want it on Steam now you have to fork out more money.

Playstore, Apple, Java, Win10 are different platforms. Now the Java was oldschool MS should have given you an unlock for the win10 store or at least a big discount. You support the game as a somewhat "founder" and you are forced to re-buy when the game comes to a "better" launcher on the same platform. They're laughing all the way to bank...

  • @label07 windows store and steam are different platforms.

  • @label07

I know what you're saying but I don't feel the need to get the Steam release when I have already got the game. I prefer it on MS store for a number of reasons.

The Windows Store and Steam are different platforms. You even said so in your original post. So you're arguing with your own argument?

There are lots of examples of games on the Windows Store that you don't just automatically get free on Steam. This is not new information or something unique to Sea of Thieves.

  • You dont NEED to re-buy it, you own in on MS store, you bought it on MS store when you bought it, you were OK with MS store then, why arent you ok with it now?

Also, its a different platform, you already own the game, so... dont buy it on steam?

exactly different platform different company valve gets proceeds from the game

    microsoft store is a platform

    and so is steam

and they undoubtedly made deals for pricing and discounts with valve

as valve makes suggestions that rare probrably appeals to for higher succes in sales

which nobody can blame them for they need bread on their tables just like we do

the microsoft to steam transfer was a good thing for rare because steam is the most popular gaming platform they made more money from steam than they ever did on microsoft store

and alot of that money goes for our free content

why is that a bad thing?? they are people just as we are

the developers and other employees have families to feed and bills to pay

i cannot blame them at all for this buisness choice

i already have the game why would i buy it again when i still have it

  • One thing I've seen steam users have over ms store users is the use of "recent players" to tell whether they're in the same servers as people, or even to keep an eye on players they've come across on the seas.

  • @digestedingo

Yeh you can do that with xbox app on PC as well, handy for finding out who you have met in game.

MS store allows me and my son to play together as well, not sure Steam family settings allow you to do that, only 1 instance allowed to run as far as I can make out, might be wrong..
