Why is it hard to get Twitch drops?

  • Twitch added a whole new step to getting Twitch drops for Sea of Thieves!

    Why!?

We already have to set up a Twitch account, an Xbox account, pay for that, sign up for Twitch Prime, pay for that, link our Twitch and Xbox accounts, find out what we can earn and when, watch a partnered streamer for a certain amount of time while signed in, and NOW we also have to go to a specific page on Twitch and press a claim button during the availability period!

    🤬

Why do they have to make it so hard!?

I jumped through hoops in the past to get drops to work, and finally got in the groove, and now that they've added an extra step WITHOUT NOTICE, I almost missed out on getting the ancestral wheel despite watching 3 separate partnered streams at 3 separate times! Why can't I just watch the stream, jump into my game, and find the drop like before? Now I gotta hit a claim button too!?

It's enough to make someone go mad!
    😡😡😡😡😡

  • @galactic-geek I almost missed it because of the same reason!
    Keep it simple please!

  • I wish they just added the twitch drops into the emporium a month or so later. People would still watch for the exclusivity but for the rest of us we can just buy them a month later and not have to bother with twitch.

  • @galactic-geek there is no need to pay for anything....all you need is a Microsoft Account (free...) and a Twitch account (also free...).

If you have linked the accounts and go to the channel of a Sea of Thieves partnered streamer, there will be a pop up at the top of the chatbox (that even has a progress bar now) and when it is complete there is another pop up for you to click on!

  • I missed the cannons I think I was misinformed by one of the streamers.

  • Dance monkey! Dance for my cosmetics XD

  • It's actually easier to know if you've qualified for the drop or not because the inventory page shows you what is dropping and when it is claimable.

  • I'm with @Galactic-Geek on this. I've been watching streamers all freakin' day (ones I actually like) waiting for the drop. Nothing. It would have been nice if somebody actually mentioned you have to do something different. Now I have to go watch a streamer I don't even like and wait for "something" to pop up? Very frustrating. Ugh!

  • I can’t even access the notifications or click on my profile from my phone or Xbox before being spam with be with “try again later” meaning I can’t even redeem the rewards, I try to do it on computer but my password seem to wrong so I resets it and.... it doesn’t even work and my password is still yet to be reseted, why do twitch have to make extra steps to claim meaningless rewards

  • @genuine-heather If you watched anyone for 30 minutes today, you've probably already qualified. Just go to your inventory: https://www.twitch.tv/drops/inventory

It will show what you've qualified for, with a button to claim it, as well as upcoming drops.

  • @ajm123 They are either tomorrow or the day after.

  • I gave up on drops awhile ago. Majority of time I never even got the drops. I would have to contact Rare. My account was set up properly linked, on twitch it said I had drops set up but yeah most times nothing.

  • I agree. I did not miss out, but only because I was clicking around and stumbled across the new "Claim Drops" thingy.

  • Unless you were specifically just not looking, i have no idea how you could miss all of the pop-ups on Twitch about how it works.

Sounds like most people with complaints wanted to just AFK a stream for cosmetics rather than participate in the Twitch community (which is the point of Twitch drops) or even pay attention enough to click through a couple pages to claim their drop.

Lastly, as @triheadedmonkey already said, you don't need to pay for any subscription services to get drops. If you don't want to pay to play online, you shouldn't have bought an Xbox; that's always part of the deal with consoles, and part of the reason why PC is a better choice. As for Twitch Prime, you don't need to pay for it at all for drops, but it's included for free if you have an Amazon subscription, gives you a free subscription to use on any Twitch channel you want every month, and gives you free stuff in lots of different games (and that one time in SoT where we got a unicorn ship set and a purple monkey; that was a Prime bonus, not a drop.). Drops do not require you to ever spend any money on Twitch.

Don't they know that pirates hate popups? It's why we have blockers!

    Cannons are Wednesday. You're fine.

It took me 5 🤬 minutes just trying to figure out how to remove the chat window on my phone with the app! It shouldn'tbe that hard! 😡

  • But I do want to just afk for rewards.

Like I always have. I finally found the button today tho. After I afk'd BBXH's stream for about 45 minutes while I got ready and drove to work. So she got her credit for someone watching her. I got my wheel. Which is all Twitch drops are. Ratings pushes for partners.

I do think the timing is crummy to put the new bits on M,T,W when most people are going to be at work...

  • Why do they have to make it so hard!?

Uh, pressing an extra button isn't hard.

  • @d3adst1ck - Thanks! You're right, it was there waiting. I'd never have found it, though, without checking the forums.

They're meant to increase engagement metrics, not just view numbers. Content creation is not about how many unique views you get, it's about the time the viewer spends watching content and viewer engagement (anything that has the viewer engage with the platform; chat, likes, follows, comments, etc... it doesn't even need to be positive engagement).

Twitch offers drops to get more people creating accounts and using their platform. Game companies participate to boost their game's overall Twitch metrics and increase the likelihood of people trying their game after seeing it played on Twitch. Not all game companies use partner programs to determine which streams can give drops, and it's really not much of a benefit to the streamers themselves as anything more than exposure (Twitch does not count stats from raids or hosts, which is how most streamers accumulate larger numbers than usual in the SoT directory over the course of drops).

  • @d3adst1ck Thanks for the link. I couldn't find any notifications to save my life for the items on the streamers. And I've been watching as well for a friend's account cause he's working today and doesn't have time to watch.

Also it appears it will save the drop for a few days if not indefinitely. So if you didn't claim it right away it appears you still have a chance to claim the items. Still this change to the system is kind of annoying. There was nothing wrong with how it was before. Why change it?

Hence, why I'm posting about it.

I know, right!? "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

  • @galactic-geek with all due respect, but your complaint is with twitch here, not sea of thieves.

Twitch decided to change their interface for drops, witch for the most part is better.

The only iffy thing is the claim option, what i am expecting is that there where backend issues with twitch sending out the signal that the deops where earned and that by making it a manual interaction that became more reliable

  • Thanks so much for posting!! Was getting frustrated at why they didn't show up and was getting ready for a "I've been watching streams and haven't gotten anything" support ticket again. I've always had problems with SoT and twitch drops, don't even get me started on lack of information of drops/events going on until too late, have missed the hull and flag for this one because of it.

  • @febutterfly83 Sorry to hear that you missed out on some of the drops. I didn't have to worry about the drops over the weekend because I already had that portion of the ship set. For that reason, though, I'm sure you'll get another chance someday.

Same, I always end up missing the first day of drops hehe, twice in a row now, I wish that the set would end up on the emporium at some point so that we could at least buy the missing pieces. (Happened for the shrouded ghost event so, why not?)

  • @galactic-geek

My problem with this new system is that the drops are no longer instant. I claimed the wheel and capstan but haven’t gotten them yet. I got the first 4 parts after 24 and 48 hours.

I watched and timed 4 different attempts to get the hull and flag before I figured out I had to physically claim them. Normally, I don’t have to claim anything and they are added to my account instantly. I’m just glad I figured it out before I lost my chance. I don’t know if I could still claim it after the 24 hours have passed even if I successfully watched the stream

  • @galactic-geek

If you think getting Twitch Drops loot is hard, you should try to enable Twitch Drops on your stream...

  • I didn't hit 'claim' until Monday for the first two drops fyi.. If you watched for 30 mins you should be good.

  • It's actually a major improvement on the previous system. There is no guessing if you unlocked something, you can track your progress to getting it and claim it whenever you want.

It might seem complicated at first, because it's different, but if you look into it and actually do some searching it makes a lot more sense and gives a lot more peace of mind. If you're on computer browser, you can even see your unlock progress in the dropdown menu if you click your profile pic top right.

The claim step is the only really new thing and, while I agree it's perhaps only there for engagement reasons, it's also good so that you know you have the item unlocked at that point.
