Ship drift, should it stay or should it go?

  • You set your heading north east, the waves push you east or north over time.
You must keep correcting your course every now and then.

Do you find it annoying or do you like it?

Would you prefer to see it go?

Would you prefer it if drift was based on wind direction rather than wave direction?

Or would you prefer it stay as is?

It can be annoying at times but also sometimes its not too bad depending where im going and you do feel an urgency to keep on the wheel.

What are your thoughts on it?
Keep it? Change it? or scrap it?

  • Keep it. Makes the game more realistic and alive. It would be too easy to sail and control the ship without drift, and unpredictability is what makes SoT special.

  • Definitely stay.
The part I dislike about it is it isn't incremental based on the wave you've just hit, it will shift by like 5 degrees, every set time interval... I've had the shift as I've hit waves, or when I'm in the calm between waves, it doesn't really make sense - and small and big waves seemingly make no difference for the shift either.

  • Keep it. Its fine how it is.

  • I remember when you could point your ship in a direction and it kept going that direction.

The Sea likes pushing you to the SE. Heading NW is always a chore.

I don't like it because I have to pay more attention to my wheel than before, but I don't think it needs to go.

  • I like it, it'd be too easy to leave the helm unmanned in my opinion.

  • It should stay because if removed it would take much less skill to sail the ships. If anything there needs to be currents in place so it changes depending upon your location instead of the static drift we have now.

  • Not only does it add to navigation, it's also an integral part of combat.

  • a combination would be good, like for example an area where the winds are stronger than the waves or vice versa

  • Keep it so all the afkers can keep hitting rocks and sailing far astray. These treacherous seas are no place for set it and forget it. You're sailing, not cooking a rotisserie chicken

  • It might be better of it was based on wind direction, but it does keep you guessing. There does tend to be a sweet spot where you can leave the wheel to compensate for the drift so you don't actually have to hold it all the time. I think the youtuber fuzzybond did a video on how to compensate for it, I think it was as someone said earlier about pushing you to the SE.

  • in my opinion, there should be a stronger roll of the ship in a crosswind, little water dust and the sound of a howling wind, this will add atmosphere to the game

  • Keep it.
Most sailing games have mechanics like that to keep you awake, makes the game feel more organic.

  • Keep it.

I can be annoying at times, but I think crews should be punished for leaving the helm alone for too long. Gonna have to sail your boat in the sail boat game.

  • I could get behind a current concept, with the drift being different in various regions, but generally speaking it should stay. Having it vary some in different regions could facilitate the idea of progression simply being experience, and could add some interesting things to plotting efficient Voyages so you aren't fighting against the currents.

But I'm also fine with simple, as it is also sort of a hallmark of this game.
