Full and partial repairs

  • When two crews are reasonably well-matched in skill, battles become wars of attrition. The loser is usually the one who runs out of wood.

To speed up these long (and boring) battles, I think ships should have two levels of repairs: full and partial. Partial repairs take only a 3-7 seconds and fix things up to 90%. However you'll still have a slow trickle of water, or your helm will be wobbly, or your mast won't be 100% efficient.

Full repairs, on the other hand, take 25 seconds and fix the boat completely.

My thinking is this: in the heat of battle, you'll only have time to do partial repairs. And during long battles, you won't be able to bring your ship back up to 100% between volleys. It will slowly get cruddier and cruddier, harder to use, and force a quicker victory.

Outside of battle, it will be much easier to spend the 25 seconds on a full repair and bring your ship back up to 100%.

    Thoughts?

  • @prescafatty doesn't fix the supposed problem as it will still be attrition

  • The "fix" is effectively using cursed balls

Ie, saturate a galleon mid deck, then fire a ballast ball.
Hit a sloop then fire a slumber ball at damaged location

I love the fact that the game is so finely balanced that fights between evenly skilled crews become attrition fights. This is a great achievement by the developers making sure it was a crews skillset that wins the day and not whomever has the better boat, the only thing that's really different among crews.

What's the alternative? If a fight goes on long enough one ship gets krakened? How do you decide which ship? No thank you. I fight each fight with the knowledge that in an attrition fight having more resources is better. So I harpoon barrels in slow moments, steal resources from them during boarding attempts, and disengage to find wood when I'm about to run out.

  • @prescafatty Or just keep the regular fix times? I don't want to spend upwards of 5 minutes just patching holes.
