Do you recognize/fear ships?

  • I wonder if anyone really builds up a notoriety where players recognize the ship chasing them?

Like I would definitely recognize FuzzyBond if I saw his white afro. But I doubt I'd recognize his ship.

Lately I've been getting a ship kill per hour while maybe losing my ship only once or not at all during the day's gaming.

So I'm definitely starting to think of becoming notorious.

And the thing I've been doing is I named my ship "The Kraken's Maw", it always has an inky hull, capstan, wheel, a 3skull figurehead and all black sails.

I'd want people to be like "oh no here comes that guy!"

But I dont really get that feeling myself when I see other ships.

    No one seems familiar....

  • Get a little nervous when I run against another ship with legend cannons or Legend of the Sea of Thieves title. As someone who has unlocked them, I know you don't get there by being a terrible shot. It gives you a ton of practice which turns you from "hit that ship over there" to "keeping them off guns, getting low shots, chaining their main mast, knocking their driver off wheel, etc." when fighting at range.

  • I don't fear the reaper
Nor do the wind, the sun or the rain, we can be like they are

  • I generally use the same one. But usely no. I also don't fear any ship so I guess it doesn't apply. I judge people on how they react if they start maneuvering the way I think they should be then I at the very least will expect a challenge.

  • I never really notice. Barely even look at gamertags. Cosmetic sets can tell me a lot about a player though... especially if they have limited time items or exclusive items. You can infer quite a bit of information.

Such as, I recently ran into a player with the Silver Blade cannons, capstan and wheel (those were the only parts they had equipped), so I knew they were Insiders with at least 37 weeks experience... and they had the Reaper's Mark Sails, so I reckon they've been playing since at least the start of the year. They had the Obsidian Hull, so I figure they watch Twitch, or at least care enough to get the drops. I didn't get a really long look at his pirate but he seemed modestly dressed but not noobish, so I got the impression he was a decent player who wasn't trying too hard to be flashy. He also wasn't dressed all in black, so not a tuccbot.

If someone is wearing the PL graduation gown though, I usually assume they are somewhat of a plastic legend.

Yeah this seems pretty true. There's definitely two types of opponents.

    *Hes doing xyz...
*What the heck is he doing?

I'm not so sure the latter is a big threat to me any more lol.

Best hot Mic moment 2 days ago, guy in water I just dodged talks back to his boat.

"They can't catch-...are they gaining on us?"

    Lol

  • @realstyli this is a really cool response.

I think this thread can be fun. Seems while obviously all the cosmetics dont really stack up equally...that people such as yourself do know quite a bit about them.

I want to get to the point where people recognize my ship (or any one's ship really) the way they recognize a skeleton gally.

Cosmetics is so interchangeable though that this is basically a roleplay factor based on skill than any kind of game mechanic

  • @idneon Oh I don't go in game chat but I use the game chat to text so it pops up. Those are the funniest things I've ever read.
I remember one time it pops up
"Wait wait hold on let me show you my cat look look....kill him
But my cat is all alone NOOOOO

I would say the same of a crew with the default cannons (or golden sailor cannons) on an otherwise very dolled up and fancy ship... Not always the case, but it gives me pause. A lot of really good naval players prefer to aim with the standard cannons, even over the Legendary Cannons.

  • @realstyli true, I don't mind most except for the ones that are really intrusive to vision (Reaper top cannons, bone crusher, Blighted, etc.)

  • @kommodoreyenser hmm...I use the reaper cannons.

But I find it not a bother to "get off the cannon" to check my shot.

It's far better practice than to move my aim a little to get a better view.

Since this is best practice, it doesnt really matter which cannon you use.

You can only see a little better over default cannon but it still blocks everything at greater than 50% range or so.

  • @idneon can understand that tactic, we usually have our driver/helmsman call distance or windage since he usually has an elevated position he can see the longer shots better.

  • @kommodoreyenser also good to perform. And it's just a teamwork effort to combine the two.

The problem. I have most with cannons is elevation. Since distance to a ship is rarely changing given what angle the ship has to be to the other to shoot. The shooting window is a set elevation.

Any gunner should first learn to find range (elevation) then leave it alone.

If you have to adjust for waves you do this by timing.

Overcoming the urge to beat timing and adjust for height of waves leaves many tearful missed shots.

  • Being new to the game, I fear all ships, lol. Now that I have a better understanding of some of the flags on the back and such, I generally try to avoid if I see one of those. I sail solo a lot and I'm not really good enough to hold my own at this point.

I highly recommend the discord sea of thieves server and link up with people in "looking for crew".

It's a great experience and game changing for people who dont have people they know to invite to crew.

  • @idneon

Happy to report that I joined up with a crew today. I'm incredibly excited to have people to sail with!

Excellent. Its the best feature about this game. Total win by whoever put together LFC

  • When I started playing at launch, I used to dread the sight of a pioneer sail hurtling towards me whilst finding my sea legs as a solo captain. It normally always ended up in my defeat.

But I fear nothing or anyone anymore as I have so much stuff I couldn't care less if I lose anything, in fact I sometimes welcome being attacked so I don't have to spend so long cashing it all in.

  • @idneon

A ship on the horizon is just a new friend to greet!

Get over here, new friend! I gots huggles! =D
