Open crew should be removed.

  • It should be replaced by something else.
Its just a really bad time. Majority of the time it matches you with mute noobs or people who just leave

We need a back room tavern lobby where i can meet pirates and choose who i join up with, like how a proper sailor would go about joining a crew.

Come and go as you please in this lobby and the people you sit down with at a table get matched up with you.

  • @daringclarky right after the title screen you should be loaded into the sea dogs tavern, from there you can invite people and set sail either open or closed crew.
Or select an option to put you in a multiplayer lounge, there you can share a grog and relay a tale. Meet new crewmen and change your outfit without loading up an entire game.

  • @daringclarky

This already exists. It’s called LFG. If you click on the Sea of Thieves game icon and go to “Official Club” you will find a bunch of posts of people looking to do certain events. They could be anything from Athena voyages to people server hopping for FOTD steals and PvP.

I learned long ago NEVER to do an open crew. I only use LFG posts

  • @daringclarky
So then its based on popular choice. Like kickball in middle school, you only pick the pirate who help you win instead of just having a good time.

Sorry, Not gonna be a thing. Nobody wants to sit in a lobby/Tavern only to have pirates line up waiting to be picked to join a crew.
Heck, this also have trolls in them who will pick or match up with you, because they seem nice only to mess around anyways.

  • So here’s the thing: I like the concept of forming a crew organically in an interactive RP fashion. Great concept.

Problem is it’s unrealistic and it’s dangerous. You only need to observe what happens in the Arena tavern already with people being edgelords. This would be significantly worse if everyone in a region loaded into a shared lobby to form crews.

tl;dr Great idea, but probably not realistic and extremely vulnerable to abuse.

  • In my experience with other games that tried putting the playerbase in one room together (pubg, cough cough) I am going to say this is a bad idea. Those lobbys were always filled with kids spewing horrible (and usually racist) vitriol everywhere.

  • @daringclarky

Just join official Sea of Thieves Discord server.
You will be finding like-minded and more experienced pirates for your crew in less than 10 minutes.

    Totally understand your concerns.

However it could be a case of voice chat is muted for everyone and only those sat at tables can actually hear eachother.

You’d simply enter the room with a goal in mind, say for example doing gold hoarder vaults.

You’d go from table to table. “You guys up for vaults? No? No worries” Next table “Vaults? You guys up for vaults? Sweet”

Or you could be the type thats open for anything and just sit at the table and see whether you like the others or not.

    Once happy with your crew.
Stick your daggers in the table and leave together

  • @greengrimz I’ll give it a go. I sometimes dont want to talk with my mic especially when its late and im having beers. But i can txt chat from discord cant i?

    Ill check it out :)

  • @daringclarky

Yes you can, and you can also write it in your LFG message. I believe people mostly use the term "No Voice" or something like that. Not really sure though.

    Thanks for sharing.
Yeah I already do this. However most posts require mics and sometimes I dont feel chatty. Open crew could be so much better, however what you recommended is a pretty good alternative too.

  • @greengrimz Thanks for sharing mate. Appreciate it. I'll get myself signed up.

  • I had the idea for a player hub way back in the early days.
Goes a little something like this.

    Sea of Thieves Player hub
    07 April 2018
    13:57

I think Sea of Thieves should have a central hub like Destiny. A big port town on it's own server so we could have as many players there as possible. You should be able to choose if you wanted to start in the 'Hub' town, or quick start the sea adventure like we do now.
First and foremost the Hub should be a safe zone. A place to meet and chat to other like minded pirates and plan. Then go as a crew into the game proper. The Hub Town should also be full of hustle and bustle. Meaning NPC's going about business bringing life to the Hub.
I'm just going to list some things that could be there.
    -Bars for PVE players
    -Bars for PvP players
    -Private bar for Legendary Pirates
-Merchant factions should have grand headquarters were you can receive special missions.
    PVP Mini games like:
-Ship battles. Betting their own gold on who will win, teams or solo players would fight in the seas around the Hub for spoils, rank and notoriety while other players watch from the shore.
-Mini boat pirate battles on a lake.
    -Firing range. With drunk option.
    -Dueling. With drunk option.
    -Cannon firing range.
-Cannon crew mate firing. The fired mate could have an after touch to correct shots to hit the giant target.
-Arena battles, fist fights, sword fights.
    -Pub games (Cards).
    -Drinking games.

All these can be PVP with gambling options for the those involved or those spectating. And all games are available to spectate by all players in the hub if they choose. Just bring some life and community to the game.

    That's the basics.

Sea of Thieves has a community, so give the community a place to meet pirate to pirate. Whether they PvP or Pve.

  • @daringclarky

They aren’t asking you to tell your life story. Most just want mikes so you can warn them if something happens like a PvP attack or something

  • @daringclarky

If you want that just use the LFG?

Though I am in favor of open crews getting some love, a filter system or something in which preferences are able to be indicated.

The benefit of open crew is that one can jump into the game and start playing. I have no interest in an interview process.

    I don't think you understand.
It's not about the other players.
Sometimes I wanna just sit in silence and chill. When you work in retail and talk 12 hours a day with the general public you'll understand why not talking is so much more appealing.

  • Some preference options for Open Crew formation would be nice. I'd propose the following filter options, and again treat it is preference based so that if it can't match you to the appropriate players it will still at least match you with someone:

Activities (Can Select Multiple or none) = Gold Hoarders, Order of Souls, Merchant Alliance, Reapers Bones, Hunters Call, Athena's Fortune, Fort of the Damned, World Events

Communication (as above) = Game Chat, Party Chat, Pirate Chat, Mixed

Language = Provide at minimum all primary languages for the various regions that have servers

Like I say, adding these as preference options that the game can still bypass to get you into a crew if it can't find perfect matches would likely improve the experience in Adventure at least. For Arena you could basically just cut out Activities and leave the other two preference sets.

The pre vetting is basically so you are all up for the same activity. Nothing worse when u wanna do pvp and the crew just wanna fish.

I totally understand where ur coming from tho. I just wanna jump in too sometimes.

Would be cool if open had a filter of sorts to match better.

They can fish, but the ship will be heading towards that galleon in the distance... 😋

I dislike LFG, because it simply takes to long. I have no interest in 30 mins of discussions... and the demands some people have. Just give me a crew and let's go...

    You know what I mean.
Like when u wanna do pvp and they'll wanna do tall tales or cargo runs. Id rather sail solo than be part of that haha

  • @daringclarky I tend to go with the flow, simply going for cargo runs, a tall tale, some PvP ... if you don't actively avoid it at some point it shows up and sometimes you get lucky with a crazy pirate captain that guns for every ship they see.

  • @daringclarky

I’m guessing you don’t want to listen to other people talking. Is that it?

  • @coffeelight5545 It's more, I wanna be part of a crew but don't want to physically talk. I'd rather just text chat in game. Plus it means I can mute everyone because somebody always has one of those hot mics where you can hear static or buzzing all the time or them sniffing, eating and so on.

I use mics don't get me wrong, but most of the time I'd rather just be in a text chat only crew. Less effective sure but at least I'm not stuck listening to somebody slurp coffee or start singing. 🙄😕

  • @daringclarky

Honestly, I am always quiet on a ship. I don’t talk unless someone asks me something or I say something like “the ship is sinking, I need bails” or something similar. I’m aware you can type a response but on a sinking ship where 2 seconds of bailing can save your ship, do you really have time to type?

Personally, I have no problem with someone who would rather text chat but I find it easier to communicate in voice chat in an emergency situation rather than typing. Under normal sailing conditions, I never say a word.

  • I have had this stance from day 1 of Sea of Thieves, I was very vocal on it.

OPEN Crew is flawed, Rare admit relying on outside sources to form groups, discord, xbox app etc.

One of my biggest arguments, that still today in September 2020 exists, is the fact that I am STILL matched with people outside my region on 500 pings.

The simplest easiest fix is to just have a option that allows me to exclusive search for people in my region while warning me that wait times will be longer, easy, done. But that's too hard apparently.
