Randomization of Islands

  • An idea to maybe make the game feel fresh, without actually adding anything new. For maybe each server would have its own "randomized" island spawns.

For example when you load into a server all the islands on the main map (not ashen part) could spawn randomly compared to different servers. Like where snakes island is, instead of snake island being there another island cold be there. Would make the world artificially feel new every time you played cause the islands wouldn't always be in the same place every single time. Outposts be random as well, but not complete random. Like the outposts will still be where they are now but could be a different outpost than usual.

For ashen side of the map since there is only one outpost I guess with this idea it would always just be where it's at since there is no other outpost for it to randomize with, but all the other islands could be random.

I don't if I explained this well (not the best at explaining things) but in my head the way I see it, it would be a cool idea if it's possible to even do. Would feel like an adventure each game cause you would have no idea where each island would actually be until you actually get in and look at your map table.

I just got goosebumps... The amount of bugs we will be encountering is physically hurting me only from the thought of your idea...

I guess you're saying rare is too incompetent to make floating islands over a bottomless ocean be in different places.

  • @saws-n-sins

I wouldn't use the word incompetent. Please don't put words in my mouth, that's not very mature.

Rare have been and are still struggling with numerous bugs. Some of them just prove quite resilient to deal with. Doesn't necessarily mean they are incompetent. They could be hard to detect. Rare could be understaffed. Really, it could be a number of reasons. But the fact is, there's a lot of bugs going around in SoT as is. I just can't begin to imagine what will happen if islands begin to randomize.

  • Randomized islands will not work with the current server matchmaking setup, since it would be possible to merge from sea space to land space. It also makes navigating a pain since nothing is ever where you remember it to be, and it can screw up voyages by moving islands around if you merge in the middle of a voyage.

Honestly they need to find a better way than just server merges to populate servers. I don't see why you can't just make new players when loading in on a fresh boat join lower populated servers to fill them. Cause server merges mess up a lot as is. If you was unlucky enough to have a bunch of good loot on the island and you went to your boat temporary and merged into a new server chances are that loot is now gone. However you can get lucky and have the merge come into the server you're already in, but plenty of people lose stuff like this. Haven't lost any tall tale items like this but it could happen

Sorry but it would be awful.. I know my way around fairly well now, have a nice big map up next to my desk... and.. and.. all you want to do is ruin everything!!

    Awful idea.......

  • I like that the islands stay where they are and the map isn’t randomized. It makes the sea of thieves feel like a real place that I can go to. That and I have the map pretty well memorized and know which general direction I need to go in for most destinations.

And everyone is working from home too; the code for SoT is probably massive. Finding bugs in that much of code is literally trying to find a needle in a haystack.

  • I feel like they would have to rework some of the TallTales tho. Other than that barrier, I think that’s an amazing Idea!

  • @moratorydrop253 It's not. Server merges, voyages, etc. would be affected.
