Is the sloop really a sloop?

  • I am not a boat expert by any means, in fact I never really cared to much about boats until I started playing this game. I mostly sail the sloop with my gf and decided to read up about it while bored at work.

From what I gathered, the sloop is a single mast sail boat, with triangular sails in the front. However the “sloop” in this game is a catrig. Which is a single mast with a single sail. So can a sloop be a catrig or is the catrig its own type of boat? I have no clue and now it bugs me. Any ship experts out there know how accurate the SoT sloop is?

  • @vosstherat SoT ships are not very accurate... you'll notice this by the fact that the Galleon is stikingly close to a real life Brigantine!

But I'm sure, even if the names are jumbled, there is SOME truth or inspiration behind it all!

  • The Sloops in SoT are actually closer to cogs.

  • The sloop definitely is a Cog. Good eye on that.

The Brigantine is actually a Brig. There's a difference.

The Galleon could be a Galleon

The problem is for the two square riggers they lack all their fore and aftsails. So they dont look anywhere close to accurate.

The sloop looks exactly like a Cog and is rigged similar.

But the Brig has the mast type with fore mast slightly smaller

But none of the rigging type because most of the rigging is missing.

    Same for the Galleon.

The hulls are about accurate to that.

The brig has an aft sloping hull the Brigantine does not and again this is for rigging purposes.

The galleon is obviously abbreviated in game.

Oh also for what square rigged there is they are lacking most of that too.

Brigs had up to royal topgallants if I remember correct. Which puts it at 5 sails per mast.

Brigantine has such a foreign sail rigging that you cant suggest what is in game to be a brigantine.

  • No, the Sloop is not technically a sloop. It is a Cog.

  • @vosstherat no it is not. It most resembles a ship called a cog. The brigantine also more closely resembles a brig than a brigintine.

  • I looked up a cog ship and honestly, it makes me want to use the SoT sloop more. I am a huge castle fanatic and that boat clearly takes some inspiration from the most common castle in europe (wooden). If they could add a skin that puts castle battlements on your ship, I would buy instantly.

  • It's a boat!
