I'm not going to lie I'm scared of PvP. I know it's what rare wants and maybe I'm being a baby but I don't like it at all. I'm not trying to be mean but I just really wish I could play without fighting real people. The only other game I've played is TERA and I'm a priest. I like fighting the ai but real fighting terrifies me.
Truly terrified!
I too used to be too scared of my own lack of skills to PvP. I was of the mind that every crew i encounter is much much better than i could possibly hope to be.
The only advice i can offer is to take yourself outside your comfort zone and own your demons. Turn the power they have over you into your greatest weapon.
Every time you doubt yourself with negative thoughts after you are done berating yourself you need to lift yourself up with positive ones.Never let the last thought about any situation on the seas (and irl too) be a negative one. Lift yourself up no one else can do this for you.
Trust me there will always be someone more skilled/faster/younger/wiser than you out on the seas, use them to train yourself and always always take loss as a lesson to find the area's in which you can improve.
"Baby steps" is what i have come to call it.You don't have to take huge strides every day/play session but always be moving forward, never backwards, with pride in yourself and your actions and in time you WILL bend this fear you feel to become your greatest ally and mentor.
I wish you luck in this endeavour, it's a tough road ahead but YOU GOT THIS fellow Pirate one foot at a time.
What is it about fighting players that makes it terrifying then when in combat with a PvE monster?
Is it the fact that they can think? Or that their unpredictable?
Also doesn't Tera Online also have pvp?
What made you choose to play SoT knowing it was a pirate game where you play a pirate? Where you not aware that PvP isn't optional?
So many questions here.
Also the constant threat and anxiousness of other players is part of the experience. As it makes for a greater felling of relief and accomplishment when you succed. If there was no challenge or threat the game would be quite boring and stale.
@enf0rcer TERA is PvP but it's not forced on you. I think I don't like fighting people because I'm too nice and ai doesn't have feelings. I don't really know what else about fighting people freaks me out. A friend actually bought the game for me and that's why I play. I really like the game and it's really fun but I just don't like PvP. I know this sounds silly but it's just the way I am. I'm not giving up and I'll try to get better. Thank you so much.
I have never been particularly good at PVP in any game. I'm often sailing solo and without much practice I am at a disadvantage. What I have become somewhat good at is being aware of my surroundings. Every few minutes be sure to scan the horizon and try to have an escape plan whenever you dock. Don't drop anchor and make sure you are facing the water rather than the island so you can make a quick getaway.
In the event someone does get the drop on you and you really cannot stand to be in the fight, you can always scuttle the ship. Also, I would advise that if you have a rough session, log out for a little while, play something else as a pallet cleanser and come back. Dig up some chests or whatever you enjoy in the game and end your gaming session on a positive note. Best of luck out there!@ostara-mk I really love this game it's really fun and I'm going to try and get better. I'm kind of a perfectionist and really like exploring everywhere. I don't really know why it scares me so much but I'll try and get better. Thank you so much!
@the-blessed1546 You don’t have to fight. There are people here who never raise their weapons on another player. Play your instrument if they board. If you die, scuttle your ship and ignore them. If they come back, switch servers. You really don’t have to fight.
@the-blessed1546
Player or AI, they are the same thing. Both have feelings. You never seen a skeleton suddenly run for its life??They live and breath, they sail there own ships.
Players or NPC... a fight is a fight. Just mute them and look at them as a NPC? There is nothing to be terrified about, you win or lose.
Not that you need to fight, one can learn to watch the horizon and simply sail away. Our master pacifist @Hombre is the master of not ever engaging in PvP and has been playing the game for a very long time. His tactic is to simply scuttle once he is caught and move on, as far as I understood.
Choose the type of pirate you want to be and learn to play accordingly. Play smart to achieve your goals. Good luck out on the seas.
@theySPRAYtheSKY Please refrain from making comments intended to bait and troll others into arguments, and from derailing another users thread. Both are violations of the forum rules, and your post has been removed accordingly.
@the-blessed1546
Bless; you, and others like you, are the reason I ever even mentioned an offline mode. What you suffer from is called allodoxaphobia. The reason that you can't give reason to the fear, is simply due to the fact that it's unreasonable. Not to say it can't be overcome.Many don't understand phobic behavior. And it's become such a common insult, it's almost completly lost all meaning.
The fear of conflict with others would be mitigated in a comfortable environment. Where you could enjoy the game on your own terms, while interacting with others and setting up staged battles. This would give those such as yourself a way to, essential, confront your fears in a constructive, non-confrontational way.
Hopefully, Rare sees more concerns like this and accepts the fact that not everyone can play in a PvP environment.
Best of luck, Bless.
Cheers!@wisdom-eternal yeahyeah you're so smart lol! I'd love an offline mode I really think that would be fun. Thank you so much!
@the-blessed1546 i understand i was there once
the nerve wracking feeling
will i win? or will i lose?
what if im bad??
in some cases i even thought "they'll utterly humiliate me"
to that i say "NAY! im only ever as good as i allow myself to be"
nowdays i've done so much pvp i feel like im fighting the typical ai
point is you will lose but not to sound like a somethingwad but don't get mad its only a game
as annoying as it is to hear thats the truth
once you get the fact that losing isn't the end of the world and start to think "each loss is an oppertunity to improve"
learn adapt and destroy
let me tell you a story
when i started off it was me and my brother we were doing some OOS and one guy got on
easy we thought
and so we thought wrong and died
but we still enjoy the game to this day and we lose and we win even tho we win more than we lose but only because we followed the basic principle personal feelings ruins the game
so we don't let it cloud our grand idea of playing games "to have fun"
the point of my comment is not a "git gud" comment its just a tip to improving
if you struggle hard you can always ask people to help you
which i'd be glad to do if you wanted it
Give sloop arena a shot. The Arena isnt really in a great place right now, but it's a quick way to get combat experience landing shots and catching ships.
Give it till level 15 Sea Dog and then go back to Adventure. Trust me, adventure doesn't give many opportunities to initiate a fight if your goal is running voyages. Even if you don't like it or are still scared, you'll be that much more prepared for a fight when things go south and you have another ship breathing down your back.
@The-Blessed1546 If you want to learn PvP - and I'm not saying you have to by any means - but if you want to learn, then I suggest finding someone to practice with. The next time you meet a friendly pirate, ask them if they would like to duel for a bit. I've found the most hardened PvPer's are often more than happy to give new players a few pointers on how to fight :)
As far as naval battles go, practice versus other players is a bit harder to achieve, but using skele ships for aiming practice is pretty effective. You can also try joining bigger, more experienced crews. There are some Fleet discord groups that are specifically designed to help new pirates such as yourself.
Most of all - play the game the way you want to play. If you don't want to PvP, then don't. There's been plenty of sessions when all I wanted was a relaxing sail, maybe do a bit of fishing, and when other pirates sailed up on me I just let them kill and sink me, then went back to my fishing. Don't feel like you have to do anything you don't want.
Your post is really refreshing; you're not calling for change, or complaining...just stating how you feel. Take that attitude with you onto the Seas and I think you'll find many who will be happy to help. Fair winds to ye!
@ntraills Well I really liked Wisdom Eternal's idea of an offline mode but no I'm not wanting to complain about other players. I don't feel like being attacked is toxic or griefing or anything like that. But if you see me just say hi lol. Thank you for understanding!
@the-blessed1546 When I first started out, I crashed constantly. Rocks, rocks, island, rocks, rocks, sandbar, and then I realized I needed to bucket. After sailing for a while, I realized that I don't really care that much for PvP. It's fun, but you have to be prepared for it. If you sail around, staying away from the other ships, you'll have a pretty good chance of not getting attacked. Don't raise an emissary flag, as that is a beacon to grade 5 reapers. For Tall Tales, if you're at an island and you have to leave your ship for an extended period of time, hide your ship behind the island, or inside the arches (Thieves Haven, Marauder's Arch). Use a loadout that you are comfortable with. If you want to try something new, then go with it! The Arena is a good way to practice fighting against ships and players. PvE threats will attack you every now and then, such as skelly sloops/gallys, megs, and krakens. However, krakens only spawn when there isn't an event going on. I don't know if the Flameheart fleet counts as an world event though. Skelly sloops/galleons and megs will despawn after a few minutes if you don't fire at them. To escape the kraken, turn your ship around, and hope that the wind is on your side. If you start getting sucked, get off of the deck and go under to where the food barrels are. I hope this covers most of it for you! If you have any questions, ask them. The forum is a pretty nice place to learn stuff.
@the-blessed1546
HA! Bless, you've known me long enough to understand my brilliant magnificence is not but a facade.At-any-rate, I'm glad you liked the idea. To others that might read this; I'm in no way against PvP, nor PvEvP. However, if the game is truly designed so everyone can enjoy, those like-minded individuals that simply wish to enjoy a PvE experience should also be included, yes?
If what Greengrimz says is true, then Rare understands the need to accommodate such players.
I, for one, love the idea of a more relaxing game experience. And in-game mechanics could be implemented to see other, largely, PvP aspects is integrated into a PvE environment.
Cheers!
@the-blessed1546 First thank you for understanding the way the game is intended to be played and not wanting to change it all to fit what you would like. Seems your willing to learn how to deal with what you don't like which is great. You will do
fine just with that attitude alone. I avoided everything I seen at first and it took me 6 months before I would approach a ship. Arena is good practice but I watched streamers and YouTube videos then I took the approach @Vin-The-Rat said and went in to do nothing but attack other ships. I lost a lot but I learned alot. I have no problem nor fears now to solo attack a four man galley with a boat full of loot. I enjoy PvP now. If I loose I look back at what I can do differently. I believe that if you take the leap you will loose the fear. Even if you still want to mostly PvE that's fine. At least you won't have the fear. I wish you the best of luck.Also to clear up for you @Wisdom-Eternal or any others on what @Greengrimz said. There will be custom servers for a fee that pirates will be able to get to set up events or whatever they want. These servers will not have any progression or count towards commendations though. They will be simply for creative fun.
...These servers will not have any progression or count towards commendations though...
Welp, the other option is to play regularly like the rest of the people, and in the intended PvEvP environment, with the constant risk of being pummeled at any point during your sessions.
Side note: after the recent news on how that closed alliance servers Discord community abuse newcomers into posting "PLS PvE servers" threads before they are allowed in, I'M CALLING THE NOPES ON ALL SIMILAR POSTS FROM NOW ON!

I actually understand that and that is why PvP'ing in a PvPve game is so much harder for me. When I play games where it is sole PvP I am vicious because we are all there to PvP. When I play games that are PvPvE I typically always wait for someone to approach me to fight. On SOT,I do try to avoid PvP for most part. I am not as willing to get my hands dirty as I am in some games partly because SOT it is my relax game, partly because I enjoy a good ship chase and partly because hand to hand combat is rather stale for me taste.
Here is an example: me and my crewmate got bored and said we would sink ships, ok so we sunk one and honestly it was an accident and then we saw another one and got close enough to launch an attack and I was ready on the cannon and as we sailed by I didnt shoot lol.
Here is a recommendation for you so you can practice PvP because PvP practice makes perfect. Go after ships with reapers flags or chest or doing server wide events. Me and my friend have stolen plenty reaper chests from others and we do not feel bad about it. Also can always practice in Arena.
Remember do not worry about losing, its ok. Nothing to be scared of we all respwan and trust me the person who sinks you has been sunk by someone else, it happens! Have fun with it, dont rage, dont take it too serious.

Yeah, I'm not suggesting that anyone just go perpetually dump on anchored noob sloops. I mean, your first handful of kills is fine, but at least start looking for some colored sails after that.

What are you on about? When did I say to go dump on anchored noob sloops? Maybe comment just lost in translation?
I totally agree with you. Actually I like just jumping into the mix with vets when starting off PvP'ing because that is where you can really learn the good stuff.
@combatxkitty said in Truly terrified!:

You didn't. I advised OP to just go kill everything in sight. You pointed out that hunting reapers provided you with some guilt free PvP.
I clarified that while sinking a few white sails at the beginning is a good way to start, OP should find more suitable targets once she has gotten her feet wet.
In my book, anyone sporting a ship cosmetic worth 50k or more has had sufficient time to no longer be considered a noob, and emissary flags are always fair game.

Ahh ok, sorry about that. You wouldnt believe how often on this forum I have people accusing me of saying things I never even said lol.
Yes I did update my post, I agree with you on that.
I will say though even with reaper faction people I feel guilty. Have been times was going to attack and then stopped because they asked us too, I know , pathetic on my part.

Well this explians alot. It was nice of your freind to get you this game and im glad to hear you enjoy at least half of it.
If it is true that you infact suffer from allodoxaphobia as @Wisdom-Eternal suggested i recommend exposer therapy to help manage it this game can be a useful tool to help you overcome this fear.
However an offline mode would be technically impossible as all the islands and event content is not hosted locally on your system but has to be streamed in by the server. If you ever experienced extrem lag in the game you can notice how island can dissappear or not load in as well as the thing like the vendors on them.
The game at it's core was designed specifically to be and always online game as a service platform. With it's intendend goal of have players create experiences by interacting with eachother. All the PvE content is by it's nature designed to drive player interaction that why loot can be picked up by anyone and why anyone can man anyship. The combat only exist as a tool for defense so you can guard your loot till you turn in which of course could also be used to take loot from others.
In essence this game is designed to inspire/instigate conflick between other player crew's and since you possibly suffer from a phobia of human conflict this game is perfect for the use of a treatment.
@warren-michal said in Truly terrified!:
I think of both players and skeletons as AI. Once you know their strategy they are easy to defeat!
I tend to do the same, I've sunk to both 'PvEvP' from time to time and it's all much of a muchness, you learn more from player combat for a fact but it's all just part of the same great game at the end of the day.
As Lemmy said, "You win some, lose some, all the same to me...."
