Who are the Grand Maritime Union? New alliance? Or new enemy faction?

  • The Grand Maritime Union is an unseen trading company that has been mentioned a few times by the inhabitants of the Sea of Thieves. They are considered to be the in-game equivalent to the East India Company, and the Devil's Shroud may be the only reason why they have yet to be seen in the Sea of Thieves. Their existence may also be the reason why pirates have fled to the Sea of Thieves to escape the Union, or their enemies.

Talking to one of the Emporium storekeepers, they mention that they have worked for the Union, and are collecting ancient coins, which are actually important to them than gold or doubloons, explaining that they are the key for sailing through the shroud unharmed since their Union tried crossing through but their fleets are too large to sail through the Devil's Shroud safely, the majority of the single fleet they sent through were destroyed by the shroud and those that made it through still afloat were quickly sank by pirates, leading to the creation of the Merchant Alliance.

Could the Emporium workers be secretly shipping these coins to the outside world for the Grand Maritime Union? Does this mean that we are going to have a new human enemy faction invading the Sea of Thieves that we have to battle against other than skeletons in the future?

maybe but i don't know maybe

  • Well we are more like rogue merchants

  • I believe we will be seeing them here shortly. The ancient coins have the power to bend the shroud, so it wouldn't surprise me at all if they are amassing a huge amount of them to make their galleons able to pass through the shroud unharmed, perhaps even their own variants of the shroudbreaker.

Either way, their presence in the SoT would be bad, as their beliefs go completely against the ideals of true freedom in the SoT.

I imagine that they will show up after we deal with Flameheart. In terms of a story narrative, what better time for an even more powerful enemy to show up than after the defeat of a previously powerful enemy.

I think we will have to hand together to defeat the GMU, similarly to how the clans of pirates banded together to defeat the EITC in PotC3.

  • I'd like to see them make their way to Sea of Thieves eventually. Would be nice to fight a fleet of AI humans, not skeletons. Imagine if they could bring in a Man O' War! That would be such a cool fight.

    Oh this is necro lol.
