Accused of being a hacker.

  • So last night I was having a late night session with my crew doing the Ashen lord events.

We had a continuous barrage of sloops that kept coming to try and defeat us at Mermaids Hideaway.
We sank the same guys over and over but on the final encounter things took a turn for the worst.

I was in the water with my eye of reach where a Spanish player who was pretty close to me was trying to kill me with a flint lock.
He fired 3 shots and on my screen none of them hit me.

I then with 1 shot killed him with my eye of reach.
Shortly after I started getting messages via xbox live saying "nice hacks" "reported to Rare"

I responded saying what is he talking about as I am an xbox player.....

He then sent me a game clip where he infact hit me with his flint lock 3 times and you could see the hit markers each time. I didn't eat once during shots but yet took zero damage.

He said he is submitting it as proof of me hacking!!!!

I know its obviously a bad case of either lag or hit detection but am slightly worried it may be seen differently?

  • @pure-rare I wouldn't worry about it mate, they get reports like this quite frequently and afaik they can tell the difference between hacks and hit-reg.

Thanks mate. I can see why he would have been frustrated because technically I should have died and wouldn't be happy if action was took against me when it out of my control.

  • I wouldn't lose any sleep over this. I have shot players multiple times on many occasions and they haven't died. ( and visa versa) It's the hit-reg that has been bad since day #1. And Rare know this.

The Spaniard must be new to the game....

  • Why did you delete your post? I did see it just curious as to why you deleted it.

  • @pure-rare Because I was making a claim without any proof to back it up and I hate it when other to that to me hahaha.

And I was agreeing with the others that posted so I wasn't adding anything to the discussion.

But there's no need to worry, Rare just really needs to improve hitreg.

  • Try shooting 4 Eye Of Reach before you kill a player, the hitbox sometimes is extremly uglyworded :P and always has been.
But release more events rare.....than fixing your biggest problem. GG

  • @pure-rare
If he thinks you're hacking because he got hit markers and you still didn't die, then he hasn't been playing this game for very long.

Thankfully, Rare has finally acknowledged that this is an issue and they are apparently working on it, although I think most people would agree that there hasn't been much improvement.

Hopefully, this "hacker" report will get sent to the bug fixing team to help them improve the hit registration. But either way you've got nothing to worry about. Just adding more salt to the Sea of Thieves.

No they dont. Sometimes they dont even ban the right people.

@PURE-Rare I dont think that anything will happened but just for the record you know that its possible to hack on xbox, chances are smaller but possible. Not saying you hacked.

  • Hit markers don't mean anything. If you, the target or the server are lagging what you are seeing on screen is going to be old information and since the hitmarkers are generated by your client and not the server, it will show "hits" on old data. On the server end, they are not hits and that is all that matters.

  • @pure-rare

Rare doesn't only use video evidence to convict players. They use it in tandem with other evidence. The video just shows them where to look mostly or if they should bother looking the first place.

"Hey this guy hacks!!" + no video provided + the guy who crys hacks = report goes straight into the trash.

"Hey this guy hacks!!" + video evidence + from a player who rarely reports = your account is being investigated

So if you don't hack you have zero worries regardless of what happens on the other players screen. Video evidence is just there to help the people know what to look for or if they should bother even looking.

Example : My crew and I get called hackers quiet often. A lot actually to the point that we actually perpetuate it sometimes. We mess around with other crews pretending to be hackers or at least pretending to use hacks in front of them just to get a reaction out of them. No hacks are being done or used and some of the stuff we do is so outlandish I'm surprised they even believe it but it was a good laugh lol.

We'll sneak onto a ship and hide somewhere then in chat type something random like "admin/teleportplayer/xultanisdragon" or "admin/playership/drop_anchor" and then I would come out of hiding and drop their anchor lol. IMMEDIATELY the hate comes on strong and we are laughing because seriously?? Someone would buy that??

My crewmate will take 5 pineapples with full health regen from our barrel and go into the enemy ship and just types "console/admin/playerhealth_9999" and then fight the whole crew and would hide anytime he would scarf down a pineapple. So the crew would think he had god mode on or something when hes just eating pineapples lol.

We would say aimbot whenever they would come broadside and just wail on them when we are just really good with our shots.

We got yelled at and screamed at and told we were going to get reported EVERY single time. We are still playing the game because we werent actually hacking, just messing with the players we were attacking :).

So you can openly say "im hacking" but just so long as you are legitimately NOT hacking, you are fine and safe.

SIDE NOTE Becareful about the words you use when trash talking though. I've known some salty PvE players use some very vulgar language just to entice the attacking crew to respond, record the response and then report for "hate speech" or whatever. Players can be very very petty.

If they try to bait you, dont take it. Trash talk but careful not to use any of the no no words.

SIDE NOTE 2 Like @FaceYourDemon said, it is very possible to hack on xbox, just because you are on xbox doesn't mean there aren't hacks.

SIDE NOTE 3 @FaceYourDemon if your response is to why your friends or that "group" got mass banned then they probably got banned for teaming in Arena. I think Rare gives players a pass that team to TDM in arena, however team spawn camping ships to force them out of the lobby because they attacked you or team attacking ships is a big no no.

I've seen TDM lobbies gang up on a single ship for 2 to 3 games because they attack the ships TDM'ing. That is a big no no.

One of the very first videos of Arena Joe Neate stated that Teaming in arena is frowned upon and they didn't want that to happen which was one of the main reasons why they tried to make the lobby recycle players after every match.

  • Get used to it, I’d love to see all the reports against me to rare for “hacking” over the years. I get accused of it at least once a week these days from they released on steam.

  • @pure-rare

You're not gonna get busted for hacking unless you were actually hacking. Rare is more aware than any of us of all of the crazy things other players can be shown as doing from client to client because of SoT's complex mechanics being displayed over the network... They have ways of knowing whether or not you were actually cheating, and they regularly scrape for data on this stuff.

  • @pure-rare You are adding to my case that PvP and PvE should be separate modes in this game. PvE focused players should be able to opt out and not have to deal with PvP problems and PvP drama at all.

ehhhhh... if there is someone named Chronobusk hacking you may want to worry. Ask @MiddlePegLeg

  • I really wish someone would compile a bunch of videos of the times hit reg has failed someone into one video. Maybe title it as (s.o.t hit reg at it's finest)
