Firing guns underwater

  • You shouldn't be able to fire guns underwater. Gunpowder is useless when wet.

Not a huge fan of getting capped in the head with a flintlock pistol while underwater tbh. It's dumb.

Rare should definitely consider this because it 100% does not make sense to be able to shoot gunpowder weapons underwater.

  • If you want to go for such a level of realism, touching the water should make any equipped gun useless. You would need to visit an ammocrate to get new dry gunpower to fire your guns. This would make boarding a lot harder.

I'm all about making the game immersive but this might be a bit much, sometimes gameplay needs to come before realism.

  • While it may be dumb because of the physics of it, I still would want it to remain. Otherwise, fighting in water becomes an impractical slog that is rather annoying to engage in. However, if I want realism, I will play a realistic game rather then converting one that isn't.

  • This is a world where you can carry 10 cannonballs in your pocket but only 5 bananas. Realism doesn't matter

  • This games features, for example, animated skeletons, megladons, krakens, ghosts and reincarnation. I don't think realism is on the agenda.

Are you really trying to suggest that this game take away shooting our weapons while we are in the water?? Come on man lol Pull your gun out and shoot back lol

  • Launches self out of a cannon while biting into a coconut like an apple...

    bad ideaaaaaaaa

  • In a game with hulking ashen cursed abominations that have the ability to rain molten rocks from the sky, prehistoric sharks straight out of Jason Statham's nightmares, and cannonballs that cause you to dance when hit by them...

THIS is the hill you're prepared to die on?

  • OP got yeeted and is upset about it.

true but do reanimated dead bodies make sense either because it doesn't that's why in this game you can fire a black powder weapon under water

  • @chrysa1is

there is a lot that don't make sense in comparison to RL.

I would like guns can missfire in general and get a malus when wet, so the chance of a missfire is higher when wet.
Also trying to lit a wet powederkeg should have a chance to not work to add some RNG element to it.

Maybe a 5% chance in general , but 50% when wet.

  • Try swinging a sword underwater while swimming and tell me how much muscle is behind that swing. Realism has no place in a game that has magic. Balance and gameplay is way more important.

  • Things that are silly in Sea of Thieves:

    • Firing flintlocks underwater.
    • Gunpowder barrels that explode if a ship barely touches them...
    • ...but you can harpoon them all day and they're fine.
    • Launching yourself out of a cannon. And surviving.
    • Sailing vessels that can travel directly into the wind.
    • Waving your hands over a dead crewmate to bring them back to life.
    • Eating fruit underwater to avoid drowning.
    • Harpooning your crewmate in the back and not killing them.
    • Propelling yourself through the air and water by "lunging" with a sword.
    • Animated skeletons.

I could go on. The point is it's a silly game in many ways. But we all accept certain improbabilities for the sake of fun and engaging gameplay. Underwater combat is a really big part of the game. If this is a weak area for you, I suggest practicing.

I actually really like underwater combat because it evens the odds for people like me who aren't as good at fast-paced, close-up PvP. Fighting underwater makes bunny-hopping and blunderbusses useless. I'll often jump off my ship with a flintlock and eye-of-reach to take out potential boarders after we've sunk their ship. Picking them off when they think they're being sneaky is delicious. Even more so if they're trying to carry a keg to your ship. Arr!

  • PvP disliked your comment.

It 100% doesn't make sense that you can shoot yourself out of a cannon (or your cat).

It 100% doesn't make sense that you can SEE the wind when you set your sails.

It 100% doesn't make sense that you can hold 10 cannon balls in your pocket.

It 100% doesn't make sense that you can sword lunge from one end of a sloop to the other.

Most things don't make 100% sense when you think about it in SoT. Sounds like you have had a few bad experiences with getting shot underwater. That's not a reason to change the entire game. Perhaps work on improving so that you don't have those bad experiences as often. There are certain things that frustrate me about the game as well, but I think the best approach is to look for ways to overcome those things. Good luck on the seas!

  • @chrysa1is firing yourself and/or pets out of cannons doesn't make sense either

Going full speed and then dropping your anchor would split your ship in two

Sword lunging doesnt make sense either

Cursed cannonballs dont make sense either

Slapping a plank in front of a leak in your ship wouldnt work

And there is a lot more that wouldnt work....

This is not a realistic game

  • If we go with realism, how about:

    • your sword just rusts away if you were in the water
    • or each swing you take that hits wood makes it so it's stuck in there and you have to manually yank it out
    • or being damaged once makes you bleed and you have do bandage yourself or else you'll bleed out
    • also removing all supernatural features like being able to shoot yourself out of a cannon, megs, kraken, skellies, ghosts, tall tales, ...
and finally if you die once you'll never be able to play again. Because respawning is not a thing in real life.
  • So guns don’t fire underwater but the character can still swing the sword at normal speed? Yeeaaaahh, no

  • @chrysa1is yeah, there should be more realism. I don't know how tf they raise skelletons from the death.

  • Awhile ago (when the guns were OP and the cutlass was weak) I suggested something like this.

Guns shouldn't work underwater. And in the rain, or for 10 seconds after exiting the water, they should have a chance to "misfire".

  • It's like watching a bad comedy film - sometimes you just have to suspend belief in order to enjoy it. That said, I'm thoroughly enjoying this comedy - the replies alone are all award-season worthy.

    😏🍿

  • OH YES as much as I would probably dislike how I have to adapt.
It is immersion breaking and kinda "lazy" that guns function underwater.

I wish the battle in and under water would be very different.
And if just by having only the sword as a viable weapon.
It would be easier to approach a ship near the shore with a gunpowder barrel also!!!

They have been nerfed alot by turning a megabarrel into a joke compared to its power by introduction.
They used to be the ultimate punishment for not being vigilant.
And now many people know how to handle a "kek attack".

If someone makes it under water near a shore, only a shot from above the surface should disarm the situation quickly without having to move the entire ship.
Of course a topic like this finds less favour in these community though.

" NOOOOOOOO, EVERYTHING BUT NOT A CHAAAAAAANGE!
And two cannons on each side sloop will be a MOOONSTER! "

Pff really. People here are so scared and unflexible.
How can they play this game at all?
    No fun allowed people everywhere.

This is the first time I ever entered a videogame community that would totally stagnate a game rather as to try out anything new.
The complete opposite of all others, where madness reigned supreme.

Madness yes, but I rather choose chaos over boredom.

Change for the simple sake of change is stupid. This suggestion isn't needed, it just sounds obnoxious to deal with. Want realism? Play a game designed to be realistic. There exists an expression out there, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Not all change is good, look at "New Coke," a major flop for Coc(a)-Cola (Apparently this soft drink is a bad word, 10/10 here Rare). People wanted the classic, that was their driving market.

However, you know what? I will humor it. If you want a change of this level, what do you change to make it actually meaningful? Do I make it so I can douse people with a bucket to make their weapons useless? Should we start make swords rust and lose damage? If you are going to break weapons, at least break them all rather then make guns effectively useless. Making the game essentially sword only sounds rather dull and would slow the pace of combat immensely. Just seems a lot of work when what we have functions and keeps with the fantasy motif we have. Realism belongs in realistic games, this isn't one of them.

  • i think this is a troll post now because op hasn't replied to our posts

  • @nabberwar

    Hmmmmm. 50 - 50 I guess.
To see people escape a boat if the Pirat vs Pirat goes unlucky and then shoot from the watersurface feels kinda repetitive though.
