About creating alliances/determining who's friendly.

  • Hello there!
One question, how do you guys determine who is allowed to team up with you?

I'm not that long in the game so far but from what others reported about their experiences and what I've experienced so far (luckily no treason yet) as emissary with different types of players/crews, I have established a personal code to help me staying out of trouble:

    1. Don't start the voyage with an alliance flag. The flag itself doesn't quite tell a lot about you or your intentions and is often misused as bait or implies far to other crews. Evertyhing about alliance making can be discussed in text/voice chat later.

    2. Ally only with other emissaries or Pirate Legends. Anyone else is mostly untrustworthy and either just seeks a golden calf to exploit or has hostile intentions.
I won't elaborate this more or else you'll be faced with an exorbitantly long essay already.
Looking at you, "innocent" default/cheap skin noob sloops.

    3. Only accept alliance offers if the offering side follows some court rules that basically don't make you feel suspicious about their intentions.
Such as not intercepting/tailgating you on open seas, not driving directly towards your parked ship and following your instructions like lowering their speed, stay at a distance and whatever you made up.

    4. Not following, means blatantly ignoring your instructions mentioned in 3. might result in warning shots or combat right away. That crew is much likely not going to be friendly.
As a rule of thumb, worthy allies don't even need to be told what to do to gain your trust.

    5. Remember, you don't need an alliance and your partner should have the potential to equally contribute and a reason to trust you as well.
Don't be the golden calf to exploit for someone and give others signs of trust too.
Anything else is a risk not worth taking.

In fact all my allies have been emissaries and/or PLs so far, even before I established this personal code. Everyone else seemed to think that the only way to make great cash is to sink people although the most profitable way on the long run is creating an alliance, especially when that person is an emissary.
Also my allies have been few overall, but reliable. Luckily I have never been suffering from treason so far and I suspect a grave reason for that is that stereotyping people this way was a great help here.

Feel free to provide feedback and to see this as an explanation why people maybe won't accept your alliance request or don't care that you have an alliance flag hoisted.

Most people don't ally with others because it's either not worth their time as they aren't going to stay on the server for very long, or they just don't want to alliance with someone. Most players, especially pirate legends and such don't go into alliances not because they're fearful of someone betraying, but they just don't care that much about getting gold and reputation.

Most pirate legends know that going into an alliance is the best way to level up and get gold, but most of the time they would rather sink someone and steal their loot and PvP, rather than just alliance with someone in fear that they COULD attack you, or that they're just leeching off of you and not actually doing any work themselves.

There are definitely people who don't know that the alliance doesn't sacrifice your own loot, you still get 100% But I think most people find it easier to just sink you and not have to worry about backstabbing, leeching, or they just aren't going to be on the server for very long to make a profit. If you already have loot, it might be better to sink you and get 100%, rather than wait 30 minutes and only get 50%, especially if they aren't going to be on the server for hours.

Saving my spot, writing response now.

    Clever guy.

  • @kaijoi Pretty reasonable for short runs.
Though I'd say that most people who also need to get much money yet simply have no clue that working together and/or emissary grinding is much more rewarding (even if they knew that you don't sacrifice loot) than patrolling forever the sea and then intercepting someone for some skulls and chests. It's funny how often people waste their time in attacking me on the sea or at outposts when I have absolutely zero loot anymore. Unless they really want these 3 depleted supply chests and that snake I've forgotten to sell before.
