Changes To The Brig!

  • Hey guys! I'm fairly new to this, so if someone else has already posted this suggestion I apologise!
So, lately I've come across a few toxic players who make the voyages an absolute nightmare by sabotaging their own team mates resulting in everyone voting for them to go in the brig. But the toxic player in question is still permitted to use their gun/equipment wheel as well as throw firebombs thus continue being disruptive.
Edit: Also had an incident where the guy in the brig shot one of the animals we spend ages finding and capturing. (Should have put it on the top deck, was my oversight) but that’s beside the point, guns should definitely not be something prisoners should have.

My proposal is; when a player is brigged they're unable to access their equipment wheel and that includes musical instruments/guns/firebombs etc. Completely immobilise their gameplay so they don't have the satisfaction of continuously being a nuisance to deal with.

  • I'd actually be ok with this honestly. Prisoners are rarely given a bunch of stuff when they are placed in a cell.

I'm still also in favor of changing the system in another way. Being put in the Brig should be temporary, a reasonable timer to be a punishment and give room to try and talk out the issues. Two (2) or three (3) minutes for instance. Additionally it should work on a 3 strikes and your out system. So, Brig -> Brig -> Maroon (Kicked).

This would make it a little more of a hassle to just kick someone to help reduce the potential of trolling in reverse (there is no system with ones own crew that will be immune to trolling, but in this way to push someone out you're gonna need a good 4-6 minutes to do it). But this way those being trolled by their own crew in Open Crew have some recourse of protection. I'd rather air on the side of those being harassed by their own crews than be worried out the fringe instances of people letting you do full Voyages with them and then boot you before the cash out or when a friend of theirs joins (which is normally the fear with this, but I suspect that will be more rare than the kind of trolling that can be done now).

Again, no system is going to be perfect, but I think we can try and find some kind of reasonable middle ground.

Hell, I'd also be cool with making it so that if you kill a boarder on your ship, they go to the Brig rather than the Ferry to wait for respawn, granting the capturing crew some gold but allowing the opposing crew to bust them out early. This way it is an alternative respawn system that can reward defending your own ship successfully, and gives a reason for their to be a Brig on a Sloop still. Plays into the "taking hostages" gimmick of piracy without making it unbearable to the person captured (as at most they will be held up the same time they would be on the Ferry before being ported back to their own Ship). Doesn't even need to be a lot of Gold, say 50, and it can only be earned by killing another crew on your own ship.

Would make the Brig more interesting in general and give open crews some actual recourse against someone intent on just being a troll.

  • Maybe just to troll the trolls, when they’re brigged all they have is a harmonica instrument 😂

  • I'm all for restricting their tools and weapons while in the brig. They definitely shouldn't be able to use throwables or shoot out of it, that's for sure (but shooting through it from the outside should still work).

  • @scottydoggie901 Open crew is a land all on its own, if you are looking for people to play with that are experienced (or at the very least won't troll your own team) I would recommend using the official Sea of Thieves discord. It has near 160,000 players and there are constantly people asking to join a group, or looking for people to join their group.

  • @kaijoi I appreciate the suggestion but I enjoy voyages with new players & I find it incredibly satisfying to watch them evolve as well as help them increase their gold :) so I’d rather we as a community resolve and come to a conclusion to make the game more bearable against toxic players in the open world. The brig mechanic is a great idea, it just needs tweaking to show the trolls that once you’re in the brig theres nothing they can do to cause further distress. Running away to discord to find a more experienced crew isn’t the way to tackle the problem :)

  • @scottydoggie901 Absolutely, there are serious problems with open crew that need to be addressed. My post was mainly there to give you an option until those changes and fixes happen. I don't know how many hours you have on the game, or your experience playing it, so I gave you an alternative way to find crewmates if you were trying to find good crews.

Again, they should definitely change how the brig system works, I was just giving you an option on how to cope with it until the changes are made.

  • Might also be good to do the following with the Open Crew System:

    1. Give a notice about how to use the Brig (not covered in tutorials so many could potentially not know) when a player selects to do an Open Crew.

    2. Consider not allowing a Sloop in open Crew, or giving a further warning that since you can't vote people to the Brig on that boat by the way the system works that it is not recommended for Open Crew as you will have no recourse with that situation.

This could probably go a long way to helping improve the situation in Open Crew as well. Making players aware of the tools they have available to combat it, and when that might not work out for them as well.

  • Yea take away their stuff so they can just stand there. Also make them only get 50% of the gold and rep for turned in items. Or no gold or rep. Like they got sent to the brig they dont deserve the 100% of the gold and rep while sitting in jail. Also if they are not let out of the brig kick them in 20 mins.

  • @redeyesith Yeah :) like you said maybe a tutorial or even a loading screen with a description on what the brig is, what it should be used for & what to do if someone’s abusing it.

Your suggestion is a pretty reasonable request. I like it

I think keeping their rep and gold earned is important.
What if you join a ship of trolls and they throw you in the brig because you refuse to leave so their buddy can replace you to hand in fort loot?

They could brig you out of spite. Its usually those sqeeky american kids that do those sort of things.

  • People who suggest lowering rewards for players in the brig or outright kicking players are only looking at the problem from one angle. What if you join a crew and they lock you out of rewards that you earned?

I don't have a problem with disabling equipment and weapons in the brig, but touching rewards or introducing the ability to kick players is only going to create more problems.

  • It's a good idea. Removing their weapons like in the ferry.

  • @d3adst1ck I agree. Cutting down people’s rewards would be taken advantage of by the people we’re standing against.
I’m definitely against the idea of “kicking” a player as well.
I’d much rather have someone in my crew who's a nuisance get paid for the voyage instead of people like me giving it my all, getting kicked before a cash in & missing out on rewards I worked for.
