Female Pirates - do you have this to and what do you do ?

  • Serious question, myself and 2 other female pirates play this game and I am repeatedly told in game by other male pirates during combat I am going to be rXped, have things rammed in my private parts etc etc.

I am so sick of having this, I used to report it, but i'm at a point now where I think I might just have to take a break from this.

I even try to reason and get an apology from those that do it and all I get is even more abuse back.

I'm not a prude, do not mind being sworn at, but surely rXpe threats are beyond the joke ?

Or am I simply too old now to play and thats just life these days and need to accept it.

I love PVP, but I really hate that my gender means I have to put up with that.

Please someone give me an honest answer.

  • It sounds like you're running into generally toxic players. I don't mean to take away from your experience, especially since I'm not a woman, but I too am often told that I'll have things shoved up me and to go suck on this or that or that they defiled my mom.

I'm sorry you're having this experience and I promise you there are way more friendly pirates out there than toxic. It's just that the toxic ones stand out :/

  • They’re just childish kids by the sounds of it.

You can count of fools to be fools.
Dont even listen or engage with them.

When they hit puberty they’ll be doing everything they can to be nice to the opposite sex.

I generally dont speak to young players. (Im assuming they are young because an older person going on like that is probably a genuine creep).

My response to trolls is usually the silent treatment...as i tactically plot the demise of their ship. But dont subject yourself to their comments, mute, block and sink them.

  • Cant say I've ever experienced anything like that..... lonely "boys" that's what they are.... disturbed lonely little boys.

  • I find that the level of toxicity unbearably high and generally worsening. After a year or more of casual playing I have finally given up and just recently removed it. The stock response to any complaints about abusive antisocial behaviour is “It’s a pirate game called Sea of Thieves, what did you expect”. That’s not a suitable answer for me and I want no further part of the anger, hate and mean spiritedness too often encountered. So i leave it for the idiots to play against each other and further devolve to an ill mannered room of various abuses of sex, race and vindictiveness.

  • @taylor-barbossa

Rxpe threats are definitely not okay, ever, and you shouldn't have put up with that, in life or in-game. The whole "it's just trash talk" or "that's gamer culture" argument is BS.

Please continue to let people know that it's not okay for them to talk to you like that, scuttle and walk away when possible, and continue to report.

And that's if you even still want to play; would totally understand if you don't. I hope Rare takes these things seriously and keeps working on making their (mostly) good community a great place for everyone.

  • @taylor-barbossa You absolutely should not have to put up with this. Unfortunately some people hiding behind a screen think they can get away with anything.

Rising to it and trying to reason with this will only goad them to do it more (they'll see that as a win that they're getting to you).

Please keep playing, and please keep reporting! A ban for this behavior is the only solution in my opinion.

  • @Taylor-Barbossa The kind of behavior you describe goes wholly against the Sea of Thieves Pirate Code and Code of Conduct, as well as the Xbox Live Code of Conduct and Terms of Use.

Do NOT stop reporting! It may be tedious, but it makes a difference! If they do it on the regular, and others report too, they WILL get what's coming to them.

Alternatively, you can use the mute other crews option in the settings menu and still enjoy the game without all of the harassment.

  • Wildly not ok. I get competitive trash talking, but there is appropriate and inappropriate ways to go about that. Not something I'm personally inclined to myself, but I can understand it. But this is a game, there are limits, and that certainly crosses them.

    Such a pity you died.
    Real sweet miss/whiff.
    Over here, nope over here.
Go ahead, try again, I'll wait.
    Oh, thanks for the donation.
Don't worry, I'll cash that in.

All fine examples of acceptable trash talk by my book. It is a playful ribbing, not intentionally hurtful or vulgar.

Sadly, sometimes people can disappoint. The best I can say is to report these folks, block these folks on Live, mute these folks in the moment. Those are the best tools I can recommend. Taking a step away for a bit isn't a problem either, try not to let it drive you off entirely, but take a break if you need it (not that you should have to, again the behavior is inappropriate, but if you have experienced it and need some breathing room I would never fault someone for that).

I hope you're future adventures are less distressing, and hope to see you on the Seas!

    Hear! Hear!

I assume you get this in voice chat, or is it in text (typed) chat? If the latter it would be great if such language were automatically flagged for review (by a human at Rare/MS) and the offender banned permanently and automatically if they are found to be breaking the Code of Conduct.

For voice chat, it's harder of course; and it's a pity the reporting mechanism is so cumbersome. But, if there were a "Report Player" feature built into the game, it would be doubtless abused, and overused.

I can only echo what others have said. Please persevere, and please keep reporting these *&@%^1s.

Along with, Proof. Video record them and have names, then send a report.

  • Looks like you are pretty unfortunate.
Most of the players I encounter do not even use a mic.

  • As a male pirate I still get a lot of this. You can record and report this behavior but your best bet is to just switch to discord /xbox party chat

  • @taylor-barbossa
If you want to get them banned or at least have them punished, make sure you send video recordings of them saying the things. I don't know if you play a lot of games, but in almost every single game they don't record their voicechat, so the only way someone can get banned if you use the xbox report system, is if 10 people report it within a week

(It's different for each game but for something said in a voicechat, because it's not recorded you need to have many people report them for the same thing in a short amount of time in order for them to get banned)

I would recommend recording these encounters then going to the forums and reporting them with video proof. That way they'll get banned because there's proof, if you don't do a forum post and send video proof, nothing will happen unless you get 10+ people to report them with the xbox report system for harassment.

I even try to reason and get an apology from those that do it and all I get is even more abuse back.

There's no point, while I do agree that this kind of thing sucks when taken too far, there's nothing you can do about it. They're only saying it because it's online and you can say whatever you want online without any physical repercussions. If it happens again I would suggest muting them, in adventure mode if you want to mute someone, you go to other crews then click mute other crews There's not a reason to talk and ask for an apology, because they're never going to give you one, just let them dig their own grave, record, and report.

To reiterate, if you want them banned record and report on the forums, reporting someone using the xbox report system won't do anything.

  • @xzodeak But part of the game is interacting with other pirates. Turning the voice chat off just ruins that aspect.

  • Don't name and shame on the forums. Open a support ticket for Rare, report on XBL.

This is why I don't talk to people online.

  • Thank you all for your responses and kind words, its good to know that it isnt acceptable to lots of people.

Going to take all your advice and try and not let it get to me and def use the mute other crews option - would be awesome if the devs could make that a key bindable option (im on pc) then you could just hit mute quickly rather than going through the menu. I guess a PC equivalent of the Xbox Record That command would be nice as well for recording incidents that just happenned.

I forgot to add in the session earlier, they were so busy with me they missed the keg my crew mate bought on board and set off, so at least we had that!

Thank you again and see you on the Seas after a potential brief time out I think.

    All the best,

    Taylor

  • Yep not on this game but on any online game. Having guys tie me up on Red Dead and make remarks, having guys make humping motions at me on ESO, guys using the throw money emote like im a stripper in GTAO and yep on here have been called all kinds of nasty stuff. I usually do not speak in open game chat, I stick to typing so they cant hear my voice because of this and my friend I play with she wont speak at all in game chat ever. When we have our third gaming friend on and we meet someone who seems cool we will invite them to party and let our guy friend talk first and scope him out.

I can be a real nasty PvP'er(not on this game) and I have been known to dabble in the art of trolling every now and then so yes alot of salt comes with that especially when they figure out im a woman beating them, then comes the insults of "get back in the kitchen" "women should not be allowed on games" (yes some guys do not want to play with us which is why there are servers on games created as"no girls allowed" ) and my favorite "you gave your controller to your boyfriend no way is that you". I just report and block (if its bad enough) however I will admit I kinda enjoy their salt lol. I do have to say though even in a non competitive environment it can be just as bad. Once my friend wanted me to do some RP server on GTAO with him. I told him I didnt want to be bothered by the entire server and he thought I was being paranoid. Well sure enough as soon as they realized a girl was on the server I literally became the focus of everyones attention, non stop people trying to abduct me it would have been funny if it wasnt so annoying. One other of many not needed incidents was when I met a friends friend on a server, after I was done hanging out with them I got a very lengthy message telling me why as a woman I had no business playing video games, literally paragraphs , it was really weird.

Anyways so yeah it sucks and yeah the s*x stuff always bothers me the most but I say just report and move on. Dont let others spoil your fun. Also I have met some real nice respectful men gaming so I dont want to come off as all guys are aswful.

If this stuff bothers you that much I would turn off in game chat. Its really the best way to avoid it. Also what I have done is I turn messaging to friends only. That will prevent anyone not on your friends list from messaging you. Also dont waste time trying to reason with them, just stop the interaction or kill them as many times as you can. Also remember many times its just immature teens not that it excuses the nasty stuff they say to us but they are immature ya know? I get bothered particularly when its a grown man, that seriously does creep me out.

Also do you run with a crew? Sometimes having friends to back you up makes dealing with all this easier.

  • @taylor-barbossa

I not a female but i have played with many. I have witnees this kind of abuse towards females in not just this game but all online games.

This type of behaviour is disguting and is indeed not wanted no matter the game. As stated by others this offence goes agianst both MS and Rare's CoC and are banable offences. So i too urge you to keep reorting this behaviuor with proof of course. If not the trolls will win.

Also statements like these are thrown out for the express purpose of illistiting a response so it's best not engage or interact with these players and simply report some of my freinds are even kind enough to issue warning so you can do that and it will help build your case. It does however take time for a ban to take effect but i assure you as a former XBL ambassador your reports do have an impact. Comm ban are temporary but relativly quick while account bans happens in waves.

Depending on your graphics card, you should have access to an auto record feature if you have the Windows Game Bar configured. Win+Alt+G will auto save the last minute of gameplay footage, and you can increase this limit in the game bar settings under windows (press Start key, type 'game bar' and you'll get a bunch of settings results).

Madame i'm sorry to hear that the rxped thing is from pace 22 that why that's used i don't condone this behavior and the rest you should report and yes it's a good idea to take a break

It sounds like you're running into generally toxic players. I don't mean to take away from your experience, especially since I'm not a woman, but I too am often told that I'll have things shoved up me and to go suck on this or that or that they defiled my mom.

the defiled mom thing is 4 to 12 year olds nowadays

  • @taylor-barbossa female player here also....sadly most times during pvp with mic players i get similar threats even telling they will show me a "good" time when they find me rl O_o
I report them usually but since i dont record most of the time, they usually run free until someone catches them on tape -.-

The biggest problem is that its the internet and people generally think they can behave like apes and say stuff like that since "its only a game" not only for sot in that regard.
The same as dark skinned pirates/players get the n word or other things thrown around...its just bs to give the "its just a game, its online you shouldnt care" excuse for it. There are still people behind that person which might get affected by it when they are already at a bad time in their lives. :/

  • @taylor-barbossa

It is not acceptable behavior. I am a stereotypical white male playing a black female character, which somehow makes some people harrass me with racial or sexist remarks.

If you come across them please keep reporting them and put other crews on mute during that battle. There is no excuse for this type of behavior.

  • @taylor-barbossa I'm afraid this is a global problem. Some men feel the need to act tough in order to feel respected, or strong, or whatever. In some cultures it's worse than others and it's going to take some more evolution to fully get rid of this. In the meantime, I'd look into ways to record them. I think, with utterances that vile, Rare is going to make short work of them.

We should at least show that we will never accept this.

  • @taylor-barbossa said in Female Pirates - do you have this to and what do you do ?:

Or am I simply too old now to play and thats just life these days and need to accept it.

No, you're neither too old nor should anyone have to just 'accept' this kind of verbal abuse. It is totally unacceptable.

As others have mentioned, please keep reporting behaviour such as this. Use the game bar to capture past gameplay and voice chat, mute other crews if you need to, use text chat and screenshot if it happens again.

I know it often feels like nothing is done because we don't hear the results of our reports, but please know that your reports are investigated and action is taken where necessary.

    Repeat or severe offences

We may permanently suspend a profile or device if we can no longer trust it due to a severe violation, or if our attempts to correct repeated negative behaviours are unsuccessful. Under permanent suspension, the owner of the suspended profile forfeits all licences for games and other content, Gold membership time and Microsoft account balances.

    Xbox Community Standards

  • Hi @Taylor-Barbossa,

Sorry that you experienced something like this when playing Sea of Thieves. Echoing what Katt has said, you're not 'too old' and this kind of abuse and harassment isn't something we tolerate in our game or community. It directly violates both Xbox's Community Conduct and Sea of Thieves' own Code of Conduct.

When you encounter incidents like this, please report them to our customer support team, providing any evidence that you can. They will review your report and take necessary action from there.

The thread will be locked as this is now a Support issue.
