How to upgrade your ship without it being vertical gameplay

  • Right now the only thing separating players are cosmetics, but that gets kinda boring IMO. So, I came up with an idea to change up gameplay and I think would just make the game a lot more funner. And that is upgrading a part of the ship.

Now this wouldnt br vertical gameplay because this would be available to all thr players from the time they start.

    This would go like this:

    • you could change the size of the sails to make you ship go faster
    • you could give your ship a stronger hull (either takes less damage or water doesnt flood in as quick)
    • you could make your ship turn faster and quicker
    • you could give your shipet tons of supplies
    • you could add to your ship the ability to damage other ships exponentially by ramming them
    • you could even (this might be OP) but put a cannon on either the back or front of the ship

And you would also only be able to choose ONE of these upgrades per session but you would also be able to change it. (I hope that makes sense) and there would also probably be a lot more possibilities to upgrade the ship, but this wouldnt be a vertical upgrade since this would be available to EVERYONE and some of these upgrades would balance each other put. Would do u guys think about this idea or is it dumb?

Keep in mind this list was just an example and some of these would probably break the balance of the game.

  • It's not dumb, persay. The fact that it would be available to everyone is a good (and important) aspect, and I like the limitation of having to choose one "upgrade" at a time.

    Where I'm concerned is two-fold:

    1. Discoverability - how would new players learn about this system? This is a game with an admittedly pretty steep learning curve, so throwing what is essentially an entirely new system into the mix for new pirates to learn, understand, and make decisions based on is asking a lot.

    2. Expectations - using your list, any one of those would have a significant impact on how I would approach a ship using it, if I wanted to attack/sink them. How would I know what I was up against from afar, so that I could plan my attack (or my defense, as appropriate).

For example - how would I know that a ship has selected the "stronger hull" option, so that I could plan for a different tactic - maybe boarding instead of raining cannonballs?

PVP in this game already presents the player with an unending array of options as to how to enter and win the fight, so adding an entirely new level could be just too much.

Very true I didnt think about that

In my mind choosing and changing one of these stats would also change the look of the ship, ie: if you pick the stronger hull option then there would be metal on the outside of the hull, or if you pick the ramming option then you would have some sort of ramming device on the front of the ship and etc.

PVP in this game already presents the player with an unending array of options as to how to enter and win the fight, so adding an entirely new level could be just too much.

And what I also see from this idea is it could help the PVE'ers as well, for example, the extra speed on your ship could help you run away from your attackers, and the extra supplies could help you survive those attacks, and even the faster and quicker turning could help you evade the other crew. And even the stronger hull could help a lot for a PVP'er or PVE'er

And not everything on my list should be implemented into thr game as some of them would probably tip the balance between pvp and pve.

  • Some of this is slightly more feasible than your thread about pirate upgrades, but the big reason most of this is a bad idea is that it complicates the already problematic relationship ships have between eachother. Brigs are already too fast in too many situations, sloops just run upwind, and galleys are supposed to be harder to maneuver because of the safety they give. If you tweak ANY of these things, the problems get exponentially worse.

Imagine a sloop running upwind with a literal backwards facing cannon. Are you kidding me? This is a horrible idea for game balance.

This idea is known as custom config and has been disscused heavily i donpt quite rember what excatly kill this argument i do rember that there was a big thing agianst placing canon a the front of ships.
In the end the idea went know where. I'm personaly not agianst it but i don't even know the counter argument.
