Disconnect after Server Merge (again)

  • This Server Merge Feature is really a pain in the butt :(

We either end up with rubberbanding or a disconnects, loosing all our treasures. I've rarely seen it work and many people I played with had the same experience. And it happened again just now. Server merge message appears - we already went "oh sh**". And yes, loading screen and an error message that we can't join the server. The next message asking if we want to rejoin the session. Sure, sounds great... aaaaand the ship is reset.

This feature never worked properly. Isn't it time to disable it? If players want to be on full servers, let them rejoin at a time of their choosing. But please don't force players on voyages to go through that horrible feature called server merging.

Sorry for that half-rant. But I really wished that feature was finally fixed or disabled.

  • You have to remember that not only does server merging combine players to create full servers, it lowers the pressure on the Rare's multiplayer servers as well. so its beneficial to them too. but yes unfortunately there are some issues with it still. for instance, from experience it does not care about what server is merged, (you could get one with really bad ping). if your really worried about loosing all your items to a server merge, i would suggest handing in what you have got before it merges.
now, when do i know if its merging you may ask.
most noticeable sign would be the absence of any world events. This can include ship armadas, skeleton forts, reapers chests beacons etc. world events will not spawn if there are not enough players.

I am by no means associated by rare HOWEVER, i have been monitoring this forum, and this has been a reoccurring issue since the last update. i would say that many of the issues are actual bugs. if more people keep bringing this up i'll send a support ticket to rare. (i want to make sure its actually a bug before sending it)

  • I do understand the idea behind server merges, don't get me wrong. But a feature with that many issues and a huge impact on failure shouldn't be enabled to be honest.

While searching for solutions to avoid it, I came across the "do not anchor" trick which gave me hope, until I read that they "fixed that". Instead of making the feature itself stable first, they simply remove the only way of avoiding bugs with server merges.

I have always a ping around 50. Even in servers with rubberbanding. So I really doubt my internet connection is to blame.
The idea of looking for missing world events seems to not work for us. Last night, we had a beacon and the ghost ships still active before we merged. I remember one time heading towards a beacon and after a server merge, it was on the other side of the map.

If they don't want to disable it, okay. But then don't make it sudden. When a server merge would trigger, send a message that warns people about a server merge in 20 min or so.

It's a feature that causes alot of issues. Period. Either fix them, disable it or at the very very least give players enough time to prepare for it.
And it is frustrating to see this issue being discussed by players since the beginning. And not much has changed. That gives little to no hope that it will ever be properly fixed. I wish the devs would be more transparent on this issue and show what the plans are to fix it.

  • @hoagascht It needs to be enabled but they could do it in a better way because the current method is pretty trash. Maybe a message and then a timer (same way as when the servers go down for maintenance) to give people a chance to sell loot/get loot back on to their ship.

I think currently you won't server merge until all players are on board the ship so they may have to force merge once the timer is up to stop people abusing it.
