Bunny hopping needs to be nerfed

  • TLDR: Bunny hopping has been a thorn in the side of FPS since jumping was added back in the mid to late 90's. It's time to step up and nerf it in this game.

Rare, the bunny hopping ability in game is causing a rift in your community. I know it's been around since jumping in a 3D FPS. I used to do it as well as circle strafing long distances in Quake 2.

Double gunning is still the meta in this game even with the cutlass buff. Git guud is not a reasonable response from the community. The people that respond with that has simply not been decimated by a bunny hopper or does it themselves. Is this really what you want your game to become? A double gunning, bunny jumping pirate?

You want to equalize the newbie from the pro by neutralizing all weapons, yet continue to allow bunny hopping? It's not an advanced tactic such as sword dash, block dash jump, or tic-tac attacks, it's just another way to try and befuddle hit detection.

    May your sails be full.

  • @gleaminx nah, leave jumping it's fun.

  • @gleaminx nah, leave jumping it's fun ;)

  • Are you saying jumping around with the sword block as bunny hopping or just jumping in general? We don’t have the ability to crouch or build walls like fortnite so yea, we jump to try and stay alive, and you saying it is harder to hit them proves it works.

  • Meh, this is one of those areas I could care less which way they ultimately land. It is fine as it stands, it would be fine if there was a jump cool down. Games have gone both ways before, neither is of preference to me.

Granted, anytime that is the case for me, it also means overall I'm in favor of them focusing on other stuff rather than changing this and trying to get the balance right cause I'm always for more cool stuff - and this would just be a horizontal move.

  • @legomaster50113 Jumping is very useful, the ability to bunny hop nonstop is the problem. Same as adjusting mouse DPI between shots to make you more elusive to being hit detected.

Maybe there should be a limit on how many jumps you can make in succession or make it so you can't shoot while in the air from jumping aka "360 no scope".

  • @redeyesith Rare probably has different teams for content, bugs and balancing. So, asking for them to balance shouldn't take away from content creation.

  • @gleaminx said in Bunny hopping needs to be nerfed:

@redeyesith Rare probably has different teams for content, bugs and balancing. So, asking for them to balance shouldn't take away from content creation.

Correct, and there are other much more important things to balance in the game, including all that spiffy new content, so this just feels like it is an ineffective use of time and resources on their part. This also would have an impact on the PvE side of things as well, not just the PvP.

So, again, I don't really see jumping as a problem. People just hopping about aren't terribly hard to hit, people who mix up their tactics are the ones who are a problem. Hopping about requires little skill, and the hit boxes in this game are pretty forgiving all in all, so it is just fine.

  • @gleaminx while I agree about the dpi thing and that is annoying I strongly disagree about bunny hopping being a problem. I pvp a lot (both with sword and double gunning) and part of the ways to stay alive is jumping around the enemies and swinging or running and jumping to try and avoid getting shot. Again we have very few ways to dodge shots with “wall bang” and the lack of crouching. It does its job well. I have had to practice shooting players while they are jumping to try and track their movements just like everyone else.

  • Nah, its fine. Plenty of fps games have bunny-hopping, its just a different style of fps. Unreal tournament, Overwatch, Fortnite, and pretty much any quake-esque shooter share this faster pace style of shooter. Not every shooter needs to be like one another, its fine if SoT belongs to that other faction of shooters.

Meanwhile, the shooting in this game is weak in general, better to just focus on where the game shines, the ship combat. Good macro when it comes to ship combat will always outshine the small amount of FPS experience this game has.

Others have even beat me to it, but targeting these individuals isn't that tricky. What comes up must come down. Players can't control their descent, simply aim where they will land. When you play these style of shooters, it just becomes second nature where to aim. Might be time to learn and adapt rather then have Rare fix this non-issue.

TLDR: Its fine, plenty of games allow bunny-hopping. This is just one of those games. Being a hard target to hit isn't anything new.

  • I dislike bunny hopping as a rule, simply because it looks ridiculous and ruins immersion. But unfortunately it's a fact of life in a game like this. I don't see an easy fix coming anytime soon.

  • That’s the problem. In your post you noted something about making it so noobs have an equal chance of winning a fight. And they shouldn’t. Noobs should have a hard time killing a very good pirate. Rare has consistently taken away the skill needed in this game, and it needs to stop or the player base will disappear.

Practice and get better with your skills. Enough asking rare to make the game easier because you are bad!

  • Let me guess. you're the type of people who want to freely grind PvE without getting spawnkilled and destroyed by double gunners who got skill and can aim and jump around freely? u want everyone to be like u holding W and spamming M1 with the cutlass thinking you're good after getting a kill? This games skillgap is already bad enough and a guy on his first day can already kill a 2 years player. i'm not complaining as i already go about and spawnkill any ship with no problem using pistol sniper :) liste, get gud. you're BAD LOL.

  • @realfickface exactly, they expected to kill a day one pl20 legendary sea dog on their first 2 months of playing the game LOL. they want to make it so the best PvP technique is to hold your W and spam your M1 fighting like 'A Real Pirate' LOl

  • Perhaps this is coincidental or not im not sure but since i played on controllers only on xbox ive never encountered bunny hopping as such.

On cross play though i notice it a lot.

I suppose if you are on pc though you got exactly the same controls as they do. If you cant beat them join them as they say.
