Volcano Aimbot

  • I don't usually whine or post, but Please turn off or lower the Volcano aimbot.

I have researched the issue and seems people have been complaining about it for the last 2 years and still seems an issue.

  • @jpritchy you should be happy about how it is now..... yes it should be able to hit you... aimbot was a thing from volcanos a whiiile back.. now its fine..

  • Volcanoes are really balanced nowadays.
If you were when the Devil's Roar came...

  • Lol, has been nerfed twice already. Probably also the type of player that complains the kraken was still too hard before the last nerf.

    Some advice:
If the volcano is erupting, don’t travel into its reach (ashes falling from the sky)

If you are on the island and it starts rumbling, get to the ship and get out of there before it erupts. Come back after it stops.

Volcanos are not hard unless you don’t think to act accordingly. They are more of a nuisance.

  • It's an interesting intentional danger feature.
I'm only mildly annoyed by the frequency of eruptions for some locations. Makes it hard to do anything for long without the risk of it destroying your ship. Maybe slow them down a little.
Was trying to fish for a bit at Brian's Bazaar, the nearby volcano would erupt every 5 or 10 minutes or something, basically could only cast 3 or 4 times each before it told me to go away. On the other hand I got some Kraken and Megalodon meat from being shooed away, but still, I just wanted to fish then.

  • If a place is going to give loot that is worth double its counterpart, there should be risks. High risk, high reward. Might be time to face reality and realize that you aren't ready for the Roar.

  • I think of an "aimbot" as a cheat - a software hack - used by players to help them never miss when they shoot. The term should not really be applied to NPCs firing weapons or game elements such as volcanos spewing rocks, or lightning strikes.

An "aimbot" cheat is designed to NEVER miss. At least, that is the goal. It may well be that the way a game works, that cannot be guaranteed. For example, if an aimbot was used to assist with cannons in Sea of Thieves it might do well against a stationary target, on calm seas, but with ships moving on a rolling ocean, and cannonballs taking time in flight, no amount of clever programming could guarantee a hit every time.

When we come to NPCs, volcanos, and lightning: of course they are programmed to try to hit players and ships! That is the point! Otherwise you would have skellies running in all directions, firing cannons and guns randomly, and never hitting anything. You could park next to a volcano or through a storm with only the slimmest chance of being hit by a firey boulder or a lightning strike. They are designed to hit you sometimes. More importantly, the game is designed to MISS you sometimes too! An "aimbot" is never designed to miss.

Long ago, even before the Devil's Roar existed, there was a post on these Forums, written by a Rare developer, explaining how skeletons firing island cannons worked. The challenge for the developer was to send shots towards a pirate ship, aiming to hit sometimes, but just as often to deliberately make the shots fall short (but oddly not too long) to create a sense of danger. The post was fascinating, I wish I could link to it if still exists. If anyone out has a link (or a copy), let me know!

As it happens, island cannons used to be a real threat. They hit far more often than they do now. Now, they are a joke. I will usually sail by skellied island cannons without worrying about being hit. If they do hit, they do so just once, which is quickly repaired. As @Capt-Kanna points out, volcanos have already been nerfed too.

  • @kommodoreyenser It amazes me how many pirates don't know about the ash advice you gave - if you look into the sky and see falling ash, the volcano can still hit you!

Thanks for reiterating it here for those like the OP who may not know about it.

I may not agree with a lot of these folks asking for nerfs or safe zones but I always try to leave some advice to help them understand why what they are asking for is not needed.

  • Please no, its bad enough its already been nerfed a couple times as it is.

  • I want it stronger. You need to get away from the volcano, not ask for it to stop hitting you.

  • @jpritchy they already nerfed it hard, in the beginning it were homing missiles that just hit you over and over again.

The current state is fine, if it gets nerfed more they will run away from you.

  • It has already been turned waaaaaay down. (Skeleton Cannons too btw.) Just trying to get to an active Volcano/Fort used to be like charging a machine-gun bunker with a bayonet.

Fishing next to a volcano? Really? Just 🤦🏻‍♂️
Also there are better seaposts in the Roar than Brians Bazar, which are further away from a volcano...

  • @jpritchy

be lucky you weren't there when the DR revelaed the first time.
The vulcanoes today are like a puppy compared to a bandog.

So you spent mental resource on researching if volcanos are rather sniping passing ships or not, but it never occured to you that you could maybe avoid them? Or stay under deck if you somehow did end up in volcano range?

  • @schwammlgott I happened to also have a merchant voyage there, was just using up my bait. But even at roaring traders there's a nearby volcano that has killed me and my ship before.

But Roaring trades isn't right next to one and when you park your ship behind that seapost there is a good chance it won't get hit...anyway, better fish completely away from a volcano
