Hacker?

  • [Mod edited]

    -Disclaimer-
    Video has adult language.

This is just a short video of a potential hacker me and my mate came up against in arena.... GTs are turned off for the stream but he (at least in my 20+ years of gaming experience) is most definitely hacking. Are there any other pirates out there that have come across something similar in their travels across the seas?

  • @mr-f4hu We encountered something similar before. All he is doing is rapidly moving his mouse into a spin. It spins his character 360 degrees while he is eating. His sensitivity on his mouse is probably set super high to do this. While on the ladder, he is just using the "F" spam to try and avoid hits. You get a hit marker, but you are not actually hitting him. That is on the game and hitreg. While not technically cheating, it is not hacking, just using something the game allows to his advantage.

  • @nofears-fun Fair enough, i figured about the F spam. just wasn't sure about the rapid teleporting

  • @mr-f4hu Something I would like to mention: This is something you do not post on the Forums. It is a witch-hunt, and the devs dont like that.

The proper thing to do is report this player with a Support ticket (Link: https://support.seaofthieves.com/hc/en-gb/requests/new ) There is a section for cheating. The devs will look over the video, and determine if the player was indeed cheating or not.
If you are unable to attach the video file because it is too big for the support ticket, I would suggest uploading it to youtube, and then put the link to the youtube video in your support ticket.

  • @talriaen It is not against forum rules to post videos of suspected cheaters

  • This is not a hack, more of an exploit. Most people call it DPI glitch or something like that and it is where you shake your mouse really fast and it makes it harder for an enemy to hit you

  • 1st, I've never seen anyone let go and regrab the ladder so quickly and so many times - and I've been playing since the closed alpha. I can let go of the ladder and regrab it only once or twice before hitting the water due to things like gravity and ship momentum.

As for underwater... NO. JUST NO. I have seen what moving your character like crazy looks like in order to avoid being shot - this isn't that.

IMO, definitely cheating, or at the very least, worth reporting.

I mean come on... That language too! There could be kids present! 🙄

  • @galactic-geek no this is not cheating

  • It's not hacking, but exploiting.
He is using the grab the ladder exploit, which prevents you from taking damage because of hit reg.
The other one is moving the camera quickly, so again, you prevent yourself from taking damage.

  • The ladder exploit is well known. Eventually the "offender" will run out of rope, so to speak, and fall off. But you can't shoot them for damage. So this is something that Rare need to fix.

The second "blinking" under water I've never seen. It could be an exploit, a hack or just serious lag?

    Report this to Rare.

  • Just looks like a dpi switch where he has a button on mouse(very common) where you can crank you're dpi right up and spin around while reloading or eating, see slot of people doing it in arena

  • You had to wait till he stop doing that to aim at you. Thats how you counter this. Actually pretty easy and fun if a fatty character do that ahah

  • @mr-f4hu

The ladder is clearly doable, it is the jump on and off and he can do it that often due to going further up the ladder while you reload which is clearly visible. The hit-registration really needs fixing.

The water movement I bet is based on their DPI settings, though I have never seen it that extreme as it looks like he changes direction really quick while swimming and most likely jittery due to latency and well being quicker than 'normal' doubt he aims/plays with that DPI setting and only uses it for dodge movements. Doubt it is hacking, but it is try-harding and might be something the devs could place some boundaries on, because there should be no reason for a pirate to be able to turn that fast.

@Talriaen The fact is that due to not having the gamer tag in question or any personal information being shown by the OP this should be above board and not an issue to show game-play to question: How did this person do it or is this a hack? He even properly disclosed the verbal nature of the clip and making it an external link. No witch-hunt going on, because for that you would need to point out the witch?

  • They fixed hit reg on ladders though.

  • Yep the ladder grabbing glitch can make them invincible, had a crew of 3 using eors and blunderbuss once to kill a guy, we shot the guy 2 or 3 times each until he finally climbed up the ladder and got on board where he eventually met his doom.

    I really hate the glitch

@galactic-geek no this is not cheating

that is without a doubt a cheat never have i ever seen anyone able to do this by normal means or even by exploit

nor have i ever encountered this in the game and i've almost played for 3 years

  • @galactic-geek said in Hacker?:

They fixed hit reg on ladders though.

not totally true... Improvements have been made to hit registration when shooting at players who are using static interaction points around the world, e.g. ladders and cannons on islands, docks and the Sea Dogs’ delivery ship in The Arena.

They specifically use that word and not fixed, because it might be better but it isn't gone.

  • @jollyolsteamed rotating your mouse with a high dpi to cause you to "teleport" all over the place is not cheating.. maybe exploiting or just bad game design?

and im not able to do it?

  • @galactic-geek Since switching to PC and using KBM, I can do both of the above without cheating. After we saw the crazy 360 under water thing once, we tested it among our crew, and everyone of us was able to do it with rapid mouse movement.

Just yesterday we were testing the ladder grab to try and learn how to throw blunder bombs or shooting a weapon while doing it. And we were successful in doing so. Again, no cheats or hacks. You know me well enough to know I don't cheat. We did it without using any macro or anything. Further, we could do this multiple times without ever falling off the ladder permanently (once we got the hang of it, pun intended). The ladder one has been known for a while now. And is definitely easier done on KBM and PC. As for the under water thing, I don't like it, but it is there and easy to do.

Do you have a DPI button setup that you enable that bring your mouse settings to what 10.000+ dpi would be my guess, while you tend to play on what is the average 800-1000 range like a normal person - some pros even go lower for more precision?

Like people find that I am insane and I play on an ultra wide screen which matters at a 1600 dpi setting, which already have people on my PC go OMG this is so fast... have a button to change my dpi to 800 for when that happens. I could technically set my mouse up to 16.000, don't know how you could play like that, but guess I could make those movements if I did and setup a button to swap.

im able to bring my DPI up to 2400 not sure if i can set it higher

but since your able to set it to 16000 try it out

so we can possibly clear this whole thing up if its a cheat or exploit

as im unaware that your mouse speed could break your movement speed to the point where you start teleporting

  • @Mr-F4HU Please refrain from posting videos of potential hacks or exploits on the forums, as it is a violation of our forum rules. We have removed the video link accordingly. If you believe you have witnessed cheating, please submit a support ticket so that the team can investigate.

Actually it is, it falls under the "name and shame" category. Also falls under the category of discussing hacks which is forbidden as well.

  • @dlchief58 Fair enough, where is the actual forum rules listed out of interest? Although it wasn't name and shame as gamer tags were off on the stream.

  • As far as I'm concerned it's still an exploit; it just may be a technical 1 rather than a mechanical one.
