This game is such a huge grind for casual players

  • All right so, I wanted to share my opinion with you all, (opinion warning be adviced) I have this game since it was launched, and I really enjoy playing it its a wonderful game, and the developers and the community ar just as good as the game itself, however I find the time limited events such as getting the burning blade sails and ghost sails a bit too much for players like me, that we cannot dedicate many hours because we have other things to do, I really like the additions and those time limited cosmetics, and yeah I know some of you may found those quests easy, but think about not hardcore players, like casual ones, like for example I find way too much defeating the Burning Blade 25 times to get one of the dopest sails in the game, it makes it imposible for people like me and repetitive for many others I guess.

So my suggestion (suggestion warning) would be to lower the ammount of times requiered in order to get those cosmetics, or give a less reward but cool to players that can't spend 12 hours daily on the game.
Really love your game and all the effort you put in keep it up!

  • No, this is a horrible idea. They do not need to nerf anything any more.

For starters, most of the big additions to the game have not been time-limited, or have at least stretched across multiple updates. You don't need to spend 12 hours daily on the game to get these things - I play maybe 2-3 days a week for a few hours each and have gotten most of the recent cosmetics.

Making the cool cosmetics easier to get defeats the entire purpose of them. Getting things like these new sails should be an achievement, so that when you see someone on the seas using them, you know that they're skilled/dedicated. Making it too easy basically eliminates any value the cosmetics might have held, and puts them at the level of the base cosmetics.

Look at the PL outfit. PL was supposed to be this massive achievement (year one, etc). It required dedication, focus, and so when you saw someone wearing the purple robes, you'd know instantly that they were someone to be feared. Fast forward to today, when even a casual player can hit PL in a month, and the purple outfit means nothing. If anything, in my experience, it means I'm going to be able to destroy them pretty quickly, because they're overconfident. Actual good players seldom wear them anymore, based on my observations within my crews and on the seas.

  • Don't Turn it into a Grind then, It makes it fun, just enjoy it while you can!

  • @naviatorkiller I'm kind of on board with you, but also not.

I 100% agree that tying the sails to a grind of 25 clears is a little ridiculous. Setting up for and then completing the event usually takes about an hour, so we're being asked to repeat an hours worth of work 25 times at minimum to unlock sails. It get's boring. I've cleared it about 5 times and I've really enjoyed it, but I'm not really looking forward to grinding At LEAST 20 more times.

I also don't think the solution is to reduce the amount of clears. I think tying high value rewards to a large, repetitive grind is a little soft. Instead, I'd like to see them tie these rewards to truly challenging events. Events that you wipe over and over until you finally beat it. THAT is worth awesome rewards imo.

  • Nothing needs to be nerfed, you have now til the end of the game's life to finish these commendations. There is no rush, you don't need to have immediate access to everything. God forbid some effort is expended to earn stuff nowadays.

I hate this "Casual" excuse, let people enjoy their earned stuff. Someone's choice in how they approach the game is on them.

  • @NaviatorKiller Then don't grind. Don't fall into the trap of thinking that grinding is the only thing you do in this game. Get a bunch of friends and play it as a sandbox. Just go exploring. Go do stupid stunts like cannoning yourselves over an island. Don't feel like you need to do everything as quickly as you can. It's been two years since launch and I'm still not a Pirate Legend.

  • Causal here,
Haven forbid you have to grind in a video game instead of reaching 100% after playing for a few weeks.

    -_- sigh

  • @naviatorkiller am I missing something? Those sails aren't time limited and you just have to beat it 10 times...

  • I'm also a casual player who will never get the dopest sails, but I don't care because that's not why I play.

I would ask, however, that Rare spend some energy spicing up the world for casual players who don't care about grinding but just like to go on adventures.

I'd love to see islands get randomly spawning scenarios/stories that would change the basic PVE strategy of drop anchor, fight skeletons, collect treasure, repeat. Doesn't have to be much. Maybe a Meg randomly circling an island, trying to get at an NPC castaway. Or a rival NPC crew that's already on an island, who may or may not be friendly. A few little extra flourishes to upend your strategy and keep you on your toes would breathe a lot of life into casual play.

  • @burnbacon can you please enlighten me? Am I missing something? It's not time limited and it's just 10 times to do...or is there an event or so?

  • You dont have to have all or even any of the cosmetics to have fun. I just play and the rewards are just the cherry on top.

  • Nobody is forcing you to unlock everything. Completionism is a terrible curse.

The minute a game stops being fun and starts being a grind for the sake of unlocking something, you should stop playing that game. Play when you want to, not because you feel like you need to.

A grind for the sake of unlocking something is a good and rewarding grind, which is actually fun. Unfortunately there's literally nothing useful in this game one would want to obtain so the grind is not rewarding and therefore not fun.

  • @xx-mirth-xx

Problem is, anything moderately challenging also gets these sorts of posts complaining and begging Rare to nerf it.

Rare needs to mix things up, giving some rewards for grinding, some for challenges, some easy, some difficult. Yes, the best rewards should be difficult. Otherwise we get what we have now, paid content and participation medals.

Also, those sails arent time limited.

  • @omnipotence13 Yeah, people will always complain, I get that. I still think unlocking awesome rewards for accomplishing something hard instead of accomplishing something N number of times would be great to have.

I honestly can't think of an item that wasn't about grinding "rep" over and over until you unlock it. Don't get me wrong, there is definitely a place for these type of rewards and I enjoy unlocking them.

BUT, I'd also like to see some more items that are both not time limited and not hidden behind repetitive completions.

  • @xx-mirth-xx
Agreed. Maybe killing the Shrouded unlocks a figurehead that looks like the spine of the Shrouded Ghost? Or perhaps completing each Tall Tale within a set time period will give you a Tall Tale inspired ship set, such as Shroudbreaker=Sails with the Shroudbreaker on it; Cursed Rogue=Briggsy skull anchor; Wild Rose=Rose Flag; Stars of a Thief=Ancient Gem wheel; Art of the Trickster=Gunpowder keg figurehead; The one with Tasha=Ancient Crown anchor; Fate of the Morningstar=Full Morningstar cosmetic set; Revenge of the Morningstar=Graymarrow figurehead; Shores of Gold=Full gold everything shipset.

Just some ideas that are Tall Tale inspired.

  • @supersnipper60 oooh, I like the idea of timed tall tales. That seems like it would be a simple enough change that still promotes another level of skill.

It may be because I come from games where the idea of a Raid incorporates and accepts wiping, but I'd really like to play an event that I go into knowing full well we might get absolutely destroyed. Not a random world event but a direct decision made by my crew that we are about to enter into something dangerous.

Some of the Tall Tales get close, but just not quite there, yet.

  • @xx-mirth-xx Yes, the game absolutely needs that level of danger!

  • @schwammlgott
I can confirm the Sails are not time limited. The commendation also definitely unlocks after Ten completions.

  • I got 9 so far! 😊

So if you don’t find the game fun, don’t play it. You’ll feel happier and can do other things with your time. Nobody is forcing you to play.

I know...my question was, if I missed some special event or so...but I guess not and OP is just confused

  • There r a lot of beautiful cosmetics that u can buy with a little bit of gold & dabloons. Some really great ones too if u r willing to paid for them. Occasionally they even have sails that u can get by simply logging in the game or watching twitch. There r tons of ways to get great cosmetics, and of coz there's the grindy ones.

  • @peteloaf777 I only stated that the grind is boring. There are several other aspects in this game which can be fun. Imho your initially stated mindset is just silly because so many Games (AAA-titles included) rely on a good grind where the main goal is unlocking gear and getting better.
Besides, I am convinced that a game should always try its best to be as good as possible, to think creative, to be bold and not just lie on its success. I am very well aware that noone is forcing me to play, thanks.
We have seen what a "don't like it, don't play it" attitude towards the community can mean to a game on another example.

Define "useful." Because Rare has already stated countless times that they're never going to include vertical progression of any kind, except of course for finding thinks like Gunpowder Barrels and Cursed Cannonballs, which disappear after your session ends. Progression is going to be entirely horizontal for the game's lifespan.

  • @sebanimation I agree with you. So many games are obsessed with leveling up and grinding to hold a player attention. What blows me away about SoT is how much better it is for getting rid of the grind! It reminds me of a party game with simple mechanics and a low barrier to entry. I've honestly thought about getting my extended family (who don't play video games) into SoT.

All this to say, I don't mind the grindy elements of SoT, even if I don't use them. But grinding is obviously not where SoT excels. I hope the game focuses more on promoting player interaction, like the emissary system, and also random variables (like the Meg) that create emergent situations that force you to alter the game's basic strategies. Those are SoT's biggest strengths; we should stick with them!

  • I absolutly don't stand by your idea. This games has ne requirements for grinding, just for cosmetics.

And this is only what is left of the difference between new players and veterans. Now underestand that it is normal to get access to little content if you don't invest time.
As all the content in this game is only vanity.

YOu alrea get shitloads of money (I will remind that in 2018, 1Mil was a hard month of grind), that prices are dead low and that today in two days you can buy whole ships and customization.

I mean, what do you want more ?

  • Regarding your post-
As one of the first players to reach the title of pirate legend at launch, i oppose massively, i understand people have busy lives but in comparison to what it used to be, getting pirate legend is like the maiden voyage in terms of how easy it is now.
in regards to commendations though, some have been made more achievable over time but for the most part left alone which i believe is a good move by rare, these are completely optional to complete.

P.s- You have to defeat the burning blade 10 times, not 25 :)
