All the best SoT suggestions

  • Dear Rare,

SoT has got me so fired up I can’t stop thinking about it. This is the comprehensive list of my favorite suggestions I’ve seen so far. Fellow players, let me know if I’ve missed anything. I'm trying to tag the originators of these ideas when I can identify them.

New zones! Each with a different vibe and strategy.

    Arctic zone
    Watch for ice bergs!
Get stuck in an ice flow and spend a night under siege, fending ice wraiths off your ship.
Don’t fall in! There are no mermaids here and the frigid water will kill you.
Your helm and rigging occasionally freeze, requiring you to break them free.
    Blizzards obscures visibility.
    Wind blows out lanterns.
New cursed cannonballs freeze ships / players.
A legendary giant iceberg, with tons of caverns, is constantly on the move. Try and find it!

    Jungle zone
    Heavy foliage obscures visibility
Hack your way through underbrush with a sword.
Discover long lost temples fully of Indiana Jones-style traps.
    Quicksand!
    Contagious diseases!
Cursed cannonballs tangle enemy guns in vines so they become useless.
A camouflage buff that makes your ship temporarily blend in with surroundings.
Sneaky alligators grab you and yank you underwater.

    Underwater zone
    Merfolk quests!
    Atlantis!
Stargate-style portals to other areas! @EcaIIaw
    Breathing apparatus! @EcaIIaw

    Ships
More cosmetic wear and tear. Boats should look disgusting after a few battles.
    Charred wood from fire damage
    Torn and patched sails
Algae stains after hours at sea

    Cannons
    Grapeshot.
Fireworks to signal SOS or looking for alliance from afar.
Shoot fruit to paint ships @FaceYourDemon

    Ocean activity
Whales, dolphins, whirlpools, water spouts @EcaIIaw

    New enemies
Banshees, sirens, giant crabs, warthogs, cannibals.

    More pirate-y fun
    Swing from halyards!
    Zipline onto enemy ships!
    Puncture sails with cannonballs!
Smack people across the face with fish @FaceYourDemon
    Trapped chests @B1eedB1ue

    More island variety
    Treehouses
    Ziplines
    Vines for swinging
    Rock climbing
    Rivers with tough-to-ford currents
    Water slides
    Destructible bridges

    Island modifiers
Randomly-spawning, time-limited modifiers to add unexpected wrinkles to voyages.
A Meg is circling that island you need, trying to finish off an NPC castaway.
A crew of NPCs is doing their own expedition, and has a random chance of being friend or foe.
When you arrive on an island, an NPC castaway builds a bonfire to aid your rescue... alerting ships miles around to your presence.

    New play scenarios
    Tower defense
    Jail break
    King of the hill

New ways to interact with players
Currently, most PVP is ship v. ship. Let's get more on-island interaction!
    Player bounties @h1pp025

Multiple groups questing in the same place at the same time.
Pit two island forts against each other, ala Team Fortress.

    Player-led world events
Millionaires need something to spend money on, right? Let pirate legends drop massive gold to start world events where they get to live out a legend. The player with the highest score in each legend gets their name plastered all over the game. Mentioned in books, statues resurrected with their name and likeness, etc. Play for fame! Here are some legendary world event ideas:

    Become a boss
Buy an artifact that transforms you into a sea monster or Poseidon-like god. The rest of the server gets massive treasure to take you down.

    Lead an undead army
Bribe the Ferryman and borrow his ship. When players die, they can either respawn as normal, or opt to serve as a ghost on your crew for gold and glory. You have a limited amount of time to amass as many dead players as possible.

    Own a fort
Buy your own fortress. Build up defenses. Install traps. Hire skeletons to guard it. The longer you hold it, the higher your score. The higher your score, the bigger the loot to the crew who finally takes you out.

A Grand Maritime Union faction to represent law and order
They own a tiny corner of the map.
They offer protection to those who fly their flag. Those players get less treasure: the price of security.
Players can capture islands on their behalf.
Once the GMU owns a new island they patrol it with ships, firing on pirates.
Pirates can recapture islands claimed by the GMU and set them wild again.
Reapers get top dollar to collect GMU flags.
Servers become dynamic, with each an evolving battle between civilization and chaos.
    (@Roller-of-Dice).
The original idea for this (as far as I can tell) came from @RustyHoarder here.

    Quality of life
    Jewelry @Roller-of-Dice
    Stackable scars @Roller-of-Dice
Tattoos broken out per body part @Roller-of-Dice
Quick access to your favorite ship, costume, and weapon configs @Roller-of-Dice

    Whew. Please and thank you!

  • Love the enthusiasm.

Some of these items already exist, too!

    Monkeys
    Underwater caverns/submerged caves
    Secret tunnels
    Trap doors
    Hidden bunkers
    Chainshots
Tiny coves to conceal your ship
    Ghosts

Others have been mentioned to be in development, too.

A legendary giant iceberg, with tons of caverns, is constantly on the move. Try and find it!

Made me bust out my laptop for this lol. Love all of this. Maybe if the implemented interesting ideas that 'counter' certain zones. Maybe after completing X-amount of commendations for turning stuff in, you can unlock a flame shovel. So you can be able to dig up the treasure. Just adding interesting elements for the zone. You will see this as I go on lol.

    Monkeys!
Sneaky alligators grab you and yank you underwater.

Alligators could be the next thing maybe. Could be cool again to add your clothing or certain food to take to handle the environments. Potions to handle the poison. Even the volcano area (forgot the name), intake heavy dose of lead so you dont fly in the air from the geysers constantly goes off, or something for fire. I know this game doesn't want any unbalances, so just make this for only the PvE content. Shouldn't effect for PvP at all.

    Underwater zone
    Merfolk quests!
    Atlantis!
    Submerged caves!

Underwater might be the next coolest thing they could do. I noticed some certain ruins underwater that look like they could be gateways to reach the other side of the world faster... if they add underwater villages for us to loot in, give us something to wear over our faces so we can breathe longer, or again lol.. potions that allow you to breathe longer. Certain food if not potions. Fine with that.

    Ships
More cosmetic wear and tear. Boats should look disgusting after a few battles.
    Charred wood from fire damage
    Torn and patched sails
Algae stains after hours at sea

You know where I stand on this lol. Even if its just cosmetics only, like whatever... fine.

    Weapons
Chainshot for cannons that does massive damage up close.

    Ocean activity
    Whales, dolphins, whirlpools.

Tornadoes too. Since your ship has already flown from getting jammed or lag situations haha. But I think seeing twisters would be cool too.

    New enemies
Ghosts, banshees, sirens, giant crabs, warthogs, cannibals.

Giant Crab should be the next thing. Since its painted on every island.

    More pirate-y fun
    Swing from halyards!
    Zipline onto enemy ships!
    Puncture sails with cannonballs!

There should be some sort of rope swinging. How many times do we see ships crashing into each other where one guy can just be ready to swing himself/herself over. Great idea.

    More island variety
    Secret tunnels
    Treehouses
    Ziplines
    Vines for swinging
    Rock climbing
Swift rivers with strong currents that are tough to ford
    Water slides
    Trapdoors to reveal secret bunkers
Rope bridges that you can blow up
Tiny coves to conceal your ship so you can plot an ambush

Yea. would like to see more island varieties that can hurt you in ways or benefit you like vine swinging.

    New play scenarios
Tower defense against waves of skeletons
    Capture the flag
    Jail break
    King of the hill

I feel like Skull Forts is similar to tower defense. Im okay with just that, but 100% down for any of those ideas to pop up. I think they need to utilize these islands more into events. Increases camping, teaming up maybe, something different, and just being on the islands for different reasons instead of what we normally do.

    Player-led world events
Millionaires need something to spend money on, right? Let them drop massive gold into their own world events and play for high scores, like Pac Man. Except the pirate legend with the current high score gets an in-game statue resurrected with their name and likeness for the entire player base to marvel at. Here are some world events:

There needs to be something really cool and unique for PL status. It has to happen. Someone suggested something where you hold down an island for a certain amount of time that allows you to dig up a HUGE monster or even Sea monster that terrorizes the whole zone. Forces everyone to take this thing out and only a hidden artifact can help destroy it. Thought that was a cool awesome idea. Gets everyone involved even if you're not a PL.

    Become a boss
Buy an artifact that transforms you into a sea monster or Poseidon-like god. The rest of the server gets massive treasure to take you down.

    Lead an armada
Bribe the Ferryman and borrow his ship to command a fleet of skeleton ships over the seas. The rest of the server gets massive treasure to take you down.

    Own a fort
Buy your own fortress. Build up defenses. Install traps. Hire skeletons to guard it. The longer you hold it, the higher your score. The higher your score, the bigger the loot to the crew who finally takes you out.

    A law and order faction
They own a tiny corner of the map.
They offer protection to those who fly their flag. But those players get less treasure: that’s the price of security.
They give out quests to let players capture islands on their behalf.
Once they own a new island, they will send ships to patrol it and fire on pirates who refuse to fly their flag.
Pirates can recapture islands claimed by law and order and set them wild, driving the faction back.
Reapers get top dollar to collect law and order flags.
Servers become dynamic, with each an evolving battle between civilization and chaos.

    Whew. Please and thank you!

As far as everything else, those are cool ideas lol. Would love to see the creativity and love these ideas as well. It would make this game the greatest game ever lol.

  • One more thing about Giant Crab. I can’t think of a reason for a Giant crab attacking a ship. Even though they’re in the water. But have this where it only comes out of the ground on islands. Or it comes out of the water but goes on land. So you would do a voyage, go to the island and do what you have to do, but be aware of a Giant Crab that may come out. I think that would be better imo lol.

  • You know, those of us who came up with some of these ideas would really appreciate it if you'd link the original threads where these were suggested, or if you'd at least give proper credit to the people who put forth the ideas.

Also, Chain Shot is already in the game; it's a short-range option meant to deal high damage to a ship's mast, wheel, and capstan.

  • @xx-mirth-xx Thank you! Edited to remove these.

  • @ecaiiaw Some really rad ideas here, keep 'em coming. I edited the original post to include your portal idea, the underwater breathing apparatus, and tornadoes (I think they're called water spouts at sea).

  • @prescafatty Regarding the Law and Order faction... that sounds like something the Grand Maritime Union would do.

That's a great idea! Added it to the post and tagged you ;)

    Ahh thanks!

  • @prescafatty Much of what you have listed are great ideas! I also have a small list of quality of life suggestions if you feel they'd be appropriate to add to your post.

  • @blam320 Yeah that's a great idea. I don't remember where I saw all the stuff listed in this post, and things like "law and order faction" and "ice realm" keep coming up again and again from different people. But if any of your ideas are here, let me know and I'll happily tag you to them.

    AHEM

Linked to the thread where this was first suggested.

  • @prescafatty

    Underwater zone
    Merfolk quests!
    Atlantis!
    Stargate-style portals to other areas!
    Breathing apparatus!

The developers stated in a forum Q&A that they will be "diving" more into the Merfolk lore in about a year or so (probably after this whole Flameheart business).

  • @roller-of-dice Yes, please send. Let's get them in here and I'll make sure to credit you.

@Blam320 cool, added the attribution. Thanks for the reminder and let me know if you catch any others.

@Galactic-Geek that's awesome. Have they let any other hints drop? Where are you finding all this out? I feel like a kid who's just been told Christmas is still a long time away. I hope Rare doubles up on their developers...

  • @prescafatty It's in the Q&A section of the forums. Duh! 😅

  • Here is the list of suggestions I had.

Some of these seem like common ideas. I'll continue to link sources as I find them.

  • @prescafatty I would like to smack players with a fish! Would do less damage but its more for humiliating the other person.

To shoot fruits from the cannons, they dont have to do damage but they would if you hit a ship they would just smash in create a stain of the fruit's color and if you hit someone his screen will be covered like with puke.

  • @roller-of-dice @FaceYourDemon These are great! I've added and credited you. Thanks!

  • I'd love to see insurance mechanics (provided by existing factions or a new NPC). The idea is simple - pay and secure some amount of your loot (with a cap based on party size, used ship, other actions). Really hate to spend several hours and end with nothing.

Another idea is to let solo players use a ghost NPC crew member for PVE encounters like skelly ships / Mega, etc.

Also maybe we need some kind of official poll by Rare so they could better understand what players want first.

I think in general, we're due for a new roadmap. I know of a few things that are upcoming that I can't talk about, due to Insider Program knowledge, but I think it would be very helpful to involve the greater community in more discussion about upcoming features, and what needs more focus.

  • @blam320 @Weisshorn2582 Totally agree. I'd also just be curious to see what everyone else ranks as a priority. I hope you're reading this, Rare; let's do a poll!

  • @blam320 Also, with the exception of the Emissary System, it seems they've mostly been focused on new events and quests. I personally would prefer additional emergent gameplay that made everyday life more varied and interesting.

I disagree. The Flameheart Fleet event is emergent, and new quests have been long overdue. The core gameplay loop is pretty reliant on using Voyages from the "Big Three" trading companies to start people on their journeys, if they're not doing a Tall Tale, so it makes sense that Rare would want to give it another pass, to make sure Voyages are fun and engaging.

  • @blam320 The Flameheart Fleet event is cool. And I 100% agree a revamp of the "Big Three" voyages is necessary—they're pretty boring as is. However I think there's something to be said for keeping random adventures spicy. Working on another post around this ;)

  • Hear me out man

    Bounty's in sea of theives.

    I know pretty fire.
