Won't let me join games from invites or join in progress

  • Hi,

Recently I bought the game on Steam and also have it on Xbox game pass. So I have to accounts with the game, my main account is on the Xbox game pass so is installed onto my desktop and not my Steam library. Whenever I now accept a game invite it minimises the game and prompts me to log into steam it also happens when trying to join a friends game without an invite.

My Steam account can accept invites from my main account but not vice versa - I wanted 2 separate accounts to game with that's why I also bought it on Steam. Here is the reddit post to show you the video

  • @elite-i-will The Steam version still requires you to use your Microsoft Account, you will need to either sign in to your current Microsoft Account if you wish to keep your Pirates progress or create a new Microsoft Account and start a new Pirate.

EDIT: If you want to join friends and use the Steam version, you can press WIN+G to open your Xbox Live friends list and join them from there. You need to make sure you are signed into/have linked the same Microsoft Accounts for both and sign out of any others.

  • @triheadedmonkey Thanks for the reply, I have 2 accounts and 2 game copies that I've paid for. I don't think you understand that when I try to join a game with my XBL main account it wants to load up the steam client? Why is this, it was perfectly fine early today and yesterday

  • @elite-i-will It looks like you are using the Game Bar (WIN+G) to join a game? Which would launch the Steam version if you have both.

If you want to use the Microsoft Version, I think you can accept Invites/join players by using the Console Companion app instead.

There seems to be a bit of a mixup somewhere with it.

If that doesn't work, you can send a support ticket and they may be able to help.

  • @triheadedmonkey I thought the companion app was the same as the game bar, I will try this. But why from using the game bar does it try to open the game installed from the Steam engine which is signed into a different profile?

EDIT: After trying the xbox companion app which when friends invite me it doesn't show the invite.
I have already created a ticket but no one has replied on the ticket

  • If you have installed the game from both launchers (Steam and Win10) it might get confused from that..

Or have you checked which account have you singed into the Xbox Game Bar? (Win+G)
What if you have the that signed into the same account as the one on Steam?

EDIT: Oh and only app that can receive invites is the Game Bar (Win+G)

  • @jumli7 No I have linked the Steam account to the right xbox live account. Also the game bar is on the correct account also

    EDIT: Spelling

  • @elite-i-will Have you downloaded the game from the both launchers? (Steam & Win10)
What I mean is do you have two Sea Of Thieves's installed on to your PC?

Because if you do, you might only want to keep one of them..
The system might get confused with 2 same games, maybe?

EDIT: Ok, sorry, I think you mentioned it already, you have it installed from MC store, my bad..

  • @jumli7 Don't apologise bud, thanks for your replies and trying to help me. Yeah I have 2 copies of the game one from the store and one on Steam. I should be able to play 2 games at the same time one from the MS store and one from the Steam store. Both have been connected to different accounts and linked to different xbox accounts

  • Hate to bump an old thread, but has anyone found a fix for this issue? I have exactly the same problem and I'm pulling my hair out trying to fix it.

  • Does this have a known fix yet? I family share with a friend who owns this game on steam (I own it myself on the microsoft store but not steam) and so I keep the microsoft version installed.

I can't join friends mid game because the xbox companion app does not display an option to join friends and the notifications for invites only show up on the game bar.

Trying to join from the game bar leads me to the steam download page and forces me into installing a version of the game I don't own and can't access because it is in my library through steam share.

My only option without a fix would be to buy the game again through steam. I spent the full $60 on this game already when it first released and with this new issue I now have to either host and stay my friends lobbies the whole session or I just can't play at all. This issue is extremely frustrating, I really don't want to be forced into an E.A. paywall just to play the game I've already bought.

I have the same issue. The suggestion from jumli7 has worked for me. It seems that the Xbox game bar links to the steam version instead of the WindowsApps version. But glad to have a fix. It seems to work now with no issues.

  • I've been having this issue for months, and now that the Xbox Companion App has been crippled, I can no longer join game sessions from friends unless they invite me. When they invite me, I get an invite via xbox game bar, and the xbox console companion app. If I accept the game bar invitation, it tries to launch steam (I have already gone through the hassle of unlinking my steam and xbl, to no avail). If I wait for the console companion invite to come through, I can finally join.

My fear, is that the xbox console companion is set to expire. The new app, Xbox App, doesn't give me the option to invite or join on a friend. It exists (unlike the console companion app), but is grayed out always.

Long story short, I have owned SoT on Windows since January 2019. I bought SoT on Steam approximately 6+ months ago, and ever since I linked it to my xbl, I have never been able to join a friends lobby.

This is incredibly frustrating, and is an issue Rare and Microsoft need to address, because it's inevitably going to drive people away from the game.

I do not want to play my steam version of the game, as it is way more buggy when it comes to alt+tabbing in and out of the game.

If anyone has a fix for this yet, please, I am all ears.

Edit, I have tried uninstalling the Steam SoT version, but it just prompts me to install the game when I try to join a friend, instead of launching the MS Store variant. Very frustrating.
