Steam version: join friends

  • Hello,

There is, as far as I can see, an excellent interface for inviting friends from the steam version of the game from both your steam friends list and the Xbox friends list. There is, however, no method I found via either steam chat or the steam overlay to join your friend's game.

This functionality should definitely be added. My suggestion is that this functionality should both be available through the steam interface, in the main menu as a subsection or part of the "Invite friends" menu, and the "Invite" submenu in-game in the Escape menu.

Hopefully this is something you will be able to implement, because as it stands there is no option currently to join a friend unless explicitly invited on the steam version. Unless it's hidden deep inside some menu somewhere, in which case you hid it too well! ;)

    Kind regards,
    forkbucket (aka neon_spork)

  • @forkbucket I agree completely with this post, thanks for sharing this. I am a newer player on the Steam version of the game for Windows 10.

Unless there is something I am missing, I just encountered this for the first time tonight. I made a friend on the XBL version of the game (we were in separate crews when we met) and I am on Steam (PC), but I cannot seem to join his game (he is actively playing right now).

Even when using the "XBox Live Game Companion" app and seeing him in my friends list, it will not launch the Steam version of the game and instead tries to send me to the Windows Application store to re-purchase Sea of Thieves again for $39.99 just so that it will open ms-xbl-multiplayer links (probably some type of xml associative link for both XBL and Windows 10 - but it's just outright disabled for Steam versions...). This is frustrating!

The XBox (Beta) app that is supposedly a newer version is, unfortunately, no different. It doesn't fix or improve anything forkbucket brings up here either. Can we maybe get a teensy version of XBL loaded into a Steam browser via the Shift-Tab menu, (same place we went to link accounts) at least? That might make joining XBL friends existing games possible...communication with the team would have to be segmented apart in these other apps for now, which I'd be fine with.

  • You can join friends via the Xbox Overlay or the Xbox Companion App regardless of whether you are launching through steam or the Microsoft store.

It's been a little buggy for me and my friends lately, but it's definitely worked in the past. The work around that works for us is inviting friends into an ongoing session using the MC overlay.

  • I tried to join via the Xbox app, but you can only invite, and not join. If you try to join a friend, they redirect you to the purchase page of the game. (I only have the game on steam)

  • i use the steam version, and ive found that the gamebar (win+g) is the only reliable way to join xbox friends, receive invites, etc.

  • I use Xbox's Game Bar for it. I have the MS Store version purchased (as that's what I've been playing with for 2 years) but not installed, and currently I use the Steam version of the game. Make sure that you link your Steam and Xbox accounts (you can do it in-game). Then, uninstall the MS Store version.

In theory, you can now invite people with the in-game menu, and you can join through the Game Bar. I don't have any problems at all with it.
