Crew Status Tags

  • I don't think that the "Crew Status Tags" feature is an improvment in this game: SOT is game where tools are important. The compass is very useful and it is a real part of the game.

When I try to find one of my friend who is swimming near our treasure in the middle of the sea. It is now too easy to find him. I mean, before this update when a teamate was in the sea, if he was not able to recognize the islands next to him then it was not possible for him to indicate his position.

I was hard, but that was the difference between a good pirate and a bad one.

Now, with the gamer tag status activated, no stress, I juste have to go to the tag even if I just don't know if he is in the Devil's or in the Wilds...

It is the same when I comeback from stealing a treasure with my rowboat. My teammates just have to follow my tag to retrieve me. Less stress, less strategy, less enjoy.

I see some players complaining about too much PVP. With that feature, I agree with them (for the first time). PVP and ambushes are now too easy, too efficient.

For me this is the only problem I have noticed since the last update.

ps: it could be disabled definitively when a pirate reaches an average level 25...

  • To be honest, I really like the function and I use it. Now, I do think maybe the distances for the names are a bit too far.

  • @eggamer13 I'm sure you're honest. I'm sure it is easiest to find our friends now. I can know where my teamates are anywhere in the ship even if I don't see them! Honestly, that's not a good addition. What's next ? a minimap in the bottom left of the screen ?

  • I have to agree with this. It's another form of "magic GPS" and an easy button we really didn't need. Features like this do make the game easier in certain respects. But easier isn't always better. That said, it's not exactly a game-breaker. But I'm not a fan of removing little challenges that give the game a degree of realism, generally speaking.

  • I like being able to see where people are on my ship, and I like to see what they are doing, butI also think it’s range should be reduced as to avoid making things “too easy”.

  • I see your points OP. But, when you play with people who aren't using mics, crew status tags make it a much more enjoyable experience. If there was a way to force people to use mics, then I'd gladly go back to a time without crew status, the reality is though, if you crew with randos at all, crew status is required, because at least 50% of random/open crew players don't use a mic. This is especially true of Arena.

    This.

  • also remember there will be people that can`t use mics with being deaf etc

  • @manuelmanouche If you don't like it then just go into your settings and turn it off? I don't see what the problem is here.

  • I agree with this, except that I believe it is too late to expect it to be removed or reduced.
I can understand why they did it, and it hasn't ruined the game, but I don't like it.

And, I doubt most who feel differently will understand the following: It's not about whether or not we can disable it ourselves - it's about its existence in the game - how it affects not only yourself, but other crews, your own crew-mates, and the interactions between you and your crew.
Try being the only player that doesn't use it on your crew. That's not going to work well.
The genie is out of the bottle.

I thought I would hate it for the visual clutter it creates on the screen, but it's not too bad, However, I still think it ruined a bit of the charm, the difficulty, and the virtual reality of the game.

On the other hand, there are plenty of other ways the same things have been diminished - server-wide voice chat between crew-mates is an obvious one. So, really... it's just a different form.

The one thing I would like to see is a hotkey to toggle it on and off. That way, I could still keep crew-names on, but not have the constant, through-walls, long-distance names at all times.

Anyway... I understand and agree with the disliking of it. Some things don't always change for the best (especially in regards to subjective opinions)... but hopefully they're not that bad, overall. ;)

  • I see the appeal but, I decided I don't like it and turned it back off.

Imagine a crew member has stolen some loot from a ship, or is trying to swim something back as you circle around in a fight. Without tags, the crew member would have to communicate well with whoever is on the helm to make sure they can get the ladder. With tags, this isn't needed. We need more things to promote using comms and good crew communication, not excuses to be lazy.

  • I figured it was a way for crew mates to keep tabs on lazy crew mates.

Noticed you can break sight if you enter the PL hide out.

It use to be a thing that some people will drop a voyage and AFK.

  • Personally, I like this feature, and think it should be made the default option.

  • The differing opinions here is why Rare made it an opt in feature.

Those who want to role play it more and communicate to describe where they are at, can leave it disabled.
Those who want to enable it can.
