Barrel Disguise mechanic

  • Tucking on ships and stealth is fun. Ive got some huge hauls in the past by simply infiltrating a ship and waiting for the opportune moment.

Its inevitable you will know every nook and cranny on your ship leaving nowhere else to hide. Being able to check all the hiding spots regularly for boarders (Which works to your advantage if you do)

My idea is to make yourself into a barrel for stealth purposes (and a few laughs)

Its not like an emote, more of a buildable costume that shares the same wheel as emotes.

It costs 5 planks in your inventory and you select it like an emote. 5 planks being the cost.

    You become a barrel.
If you move you do so in a very cartoony fashion where the barrel sprouts legs and walks very sneakily. It fools players and skeletons alike. But if you aggro a skelly it will attack you.

If a player interacts with you as a barrel they can open it up and take whatever items are in your inventory and you will remain a barrel and undetected.

If however you have zero items and show as "empty" and they interact with you, the barrel will immediately be destroyed because you were spotted inside it. Like a jack in the box, the reveal will cause surprise with an explosion of wood and a unique sound signalling to nearby crew somebody has been disguised and now spotted.

This although effective on ships especially galleons. It would likely be more effective on land. Such as planning to board an enemy ship.

As a barrel you can walk around as one in third person view to help you position yourself preferably around other real barrels.

If anything, it would provide much amusement and be quite comical.

Imagine hiding on a ship as a barrel and remaining in one place. Only to move slightly every passing moment they look away, seeing how far you can move til they notice you.

It would provide a few laughs.

To use this as a proper stealth tool. Blend in at a fort as its going on.

Watch the pirates and skellies fight it out, creeping your way slowly to their ship.

Keep an eye out if they got a spotter and take it nice and slow.

It would be a real nice nod to the hidden gameplay feature which is stealth play and heists.

  • i love this lol

  • @DaringClarky - An amazing and well thought out idea! Great job! I would love to see this feature.

  • It would be great if they could make all barrels on a ship interactable and allow you to hide in those rather than creating a ‘fake’ barrel.

  • I know every barrel on every island, outpost, fort, and ship because of how long I have sailed the Sea. A fake barrel will not work on me. So go ahead and hide; I doubt your flimsy wooden frame will stop my point-blank blunderbuss.

  • I like this idea. I wonder if the barrel should have some imperfection so it a keen eye might spot it - like the non-usuable barrels found around the Sea Dogs' tavern.

The slight imperfection should be a barrel lid that's slightly ajar to maintain immersion. Or has a breathing hole in it.

    Thats the beauty of it.
You know every nook and cranny of your ship.

    So you wont be fooled.

Thats proper progression right there instead of a shiny title saying you are a pirate legend :)

Your expertise will make you stand out from your crew.

  • I love this idea! It would be weird to have a sort of crafting system just for this, tough.

  • Ah yes, the Wind Waker method of stealth. Would be funny to see that in action.

I like the whole idea, but a good crew realize that there is a new barrel on the ship...maybe it would work better on galleons because of that...so "becoming" a alread existing barrel might be better

Except most pirates aren't like me in this case; I'm an outlier here - most will be at a distinct disadvantage and hate it. Mark my words - while it'll certainly be fun to use, you'll hear a lot about its unfairness from those on the receiving end here on these forums, and in social media, if something of this nature is implemented.

Are you sure you want that? 🤔

To be honest i wouldnt be too bothered.

When i started a year ago i started as a solo.
I probably died like 300 times but i didnt once go cry on the forums. It pushed me to watch youtube videos and begrudgingly join crews for advice.

If everyone done what I did there wouldnt ever be complaining on the forums. Just lots of new idea posts.

    I see it as preparation.
Failure to prepare is prepararion to fail.

Its a shame not everybody is like us in this regard.

    😉

I too like this very much.
    Having both would work well.

A barrel to sneaky sneak there and barrels to hide in.

To be ho est though if we could just hide in ship barrels anyways id be happier.

  • I really like this idea, but I would make some changes.

I believe that making the barrel in third person is a problem, as it would give a big advantage in some cases. I would place an hole on one side, so that I can see, of course, with the first person style compromising the view of those inside.

I also think that the barrel could be identifiable, in a subtle way, as some drawing on the opposite side of the opening, making it difficult for those using this and making it easier for those who are a little attentive.

    Here is an example:
