I play with my daughters and we are just logging back on after 2 years away from the game. The new PVE content is great but the frustration from losing 3 hours of Tall Tales progress or whatever far outweighs the excitement that Pirates roam. I would love to be able to choose.
PVE Only For Casual Players
@pickledcole watch this:
NO to PvE servers!
@pickledcole Hey! Just to warn you....PvE is a hot topic on the forum and the debate of PvP vs PvE vs PvPvE is constantly being discussed on various posts!
There are generally a couple of types of responses:
Geniune and helpful - Willing to discuss why you want a PvE only environment, the Pro's/Con's etc
Get Good Comments - This is their only input, they aren't looking for a debate but slander anyone who has a different idea of how a game can be played. They believe anyone who wants a PvE experience has no business on SoT
I myself prefer the PvE element of the game, but I understand that the PvP is needed to add a layer of danger and thus challenge to the game. I feel a PvE only mode/PvE only server would split the player base up too much and take away from those who want a PvP experience. It's all about being fair to both parties.
@pickledcole if you would like a more relaxed game as well as a chance to help rare develop features and test bugs, you can join the insider program.
You get to help test game builds and most people are more relaxed on the pvp... unless there is a pvp aspect in particular to test.@animalnewt37800 by giving people the PvE only Mode/Server, they are going against their ethos for the game. The game is designed to have you on edge with the knowledge that you could be attacked by the other players at anytime.
Whilst I agree there could be some QoL improvements made to help the PvE players a bit more, this has been and always will be a PvPvE game.
@pickledcole I do understand that it is a significant learning curve for the newer players...heck, I feel like I learn something new every single time I log on but I don't feel PvE Only is the way to go.
I feel the Maiden Voyage needs to be improved to show you the basics of ship/ship combat and then potentially allow new players (less than a few hours of logged play time) into their own server to get used to the ropes in a slightly more relaxed environment. However this then opens it up to people who create new accounts just to troll (there is a term for it but I can't think of it!). It's a tough one to get right!
Here's the fundamental problem with PvE only servers (and this is coming from a guy who loves to get full completion on tall tales): It completely destroys the game economy. If you give the PvE players an option to go into a completely safe space, there is now no loot being generated for PvP players to prey on.
In a nutshell, if you remove PvE you destroy the fun of PvP. And I guarantee that the vast majority of PvE players would disappear onto PvE only servers.
I hold that this is a highly competitive and frequently toxic community. My best recommendation is that you and your daughters practice together to get good at PvP so you can defend yourselves, making the game more fun for you and the person attacking you.
Cheers, matey!
@iceman-d18 The real problem is that there is no good environment to practice sword and gun combat with other players. I wish Rare would allow you to at least hit your crew with a sword or gun for vastly reduced damage so you could practice fight together for a long time.
@iceman-d18 Just more and more people voicing their opinions. The fact that so many threads keep showing up is proof this feature is needed.
And the fact that all these threads are being kept open by our kind @Deckhands shows that this is a serious topic that has no choice but to remain active until Rare finally takes the right decision and give the choice to player to avoid toxic pvp and griefers.
@bootyluvvr agreed! To be honest, I warm up by shooting the bell on my ship! Just to get my eye in whilst doing different movements
@iceman-d18 Stealing a fort is fine, boat camping is often a necessary evil. However, while I am guilty of spawn trapping, I do think that it's WAY too easy to spawn camp sloops and brigs. I'm not sure how to fix this, other than completely randomizing boat spawning.
@iceman-d18 Getting sunk for no reason by trolls and tryhards who cant get their own loot and feel the need to steal the hard work of others. Pirates werent necesaraly mindless murderers, I should be able to play however I want.
@iceman-d18 It's sometimes the only way forward. However, I could honestly support a FEW seconds of temporary immunity (maybe accompanied by an animation of "coming back from the ethereal") with the ability to move, but not access your food or gear. This gives players the time to reposition, and gives the attackers time to prepare as well.
@animalnewt37800 but you're getting sunk because people want your loot, it's not for no reason. The game is called Sea of Thieves.
Your arguement of being able to play however you want isn't that strong because you're wanting to play differently to how the developers have created the game. The game has been designed/developed as a PvPvE game. It's whole premise is based on player interactions but to make it fairer to all players, rather than having a ranking system, they give you the PvE option to have something to work on.
You wouldn't complain to to Turn 7 (who created Forza) because you can't fly the cars round the track because thats what YOU want to do.
@iceman-d18 Getting sunk for no reason by trolls and tryhards who cant get their own loot and feel the need to steal the hard work of others.
Within that sentence you have given them a reason. If you have loot, that is a reason to attack and sink you, so by extension you were sunk for a reason not no reason.
Also Piracy is literally defined by robbing people.
Pirates werent necesaraly mindless murderers, I should be able to play however I want.
Pirates also had one life and couldn't respawn a new ship and body every time they died. They also relied on intimidation and threat of death, that is something you can't instill in a video game environment.
Pirate - "Give me your loot, or I will kill you!"
Sailor - "Pfft go ahead buddy, I can just respawn."Can we stop trying to hold video game pirates to the standard of IRL pirates?

Nobody is preventing you to play as you want, you however will never be able to tell others not to attack you either... you cannot tell them to play differently because you don't like it. It is a 2 way street and so the same applies to you, this is a shared world: You can do what you want, but so can they!
Btw. it isn't your loot they are stealing, because as long as you haven't sold it ... it isn't yours it is just treasure in the world. How you earn it of no concern to the factions, just that you give it to them... also if you think it is that easy to steal from others you might want to give it a go, it tends to be more difficult than PvE to get a good haul!
The murdering part is funny, you are comparing dying in a game to dying in reality! Maybe pirates rather not fight daily for their lives in to the death duels? You know if they died they didn't have a ferry man door to come back right! Are you advocating for a hardcore mode: single life? Delete character on any death... should make us less murderous, as fighting now risks everything you have ever done just like real pirates.
Hello dear pirate,
I know it's frustrating when you get sunk after hours of gameplay and I am going to give you some advice.- Tall Tales are like normal quests or even more important, so it's crucial to always keep an eye on the horizon so that you can prevent being ambushed. Maybe you can do it by yourself or tell your daughters to do it sometimes.
- If you are carrying a Tale item and you fear losing it hide them when you have a chance. People may sink you and take the other stuff, but your Tale items will be secured when you go back to the island.
- Use game chat. I know there is a little chance of not sinking if you parlay with the crew is attacking you, so give it a chance.
- If you are forced to engage in combat I recommend you taking a look at some @PhuzzyBond videos. He has great guides when playing casual with people that are not too good on PvP or don't want to combat a lot.

We dont need pve Server.
We need an invisible Mode!
This mode activated, you can't get damage from others! You enter that mode by becoming a crew member of the Ferry of the Damned! As long as you are on its deck nobody will be able to hurt you... happy sailing, I hope you like your new captain he is a bit of a grumpy fellow.

Always love this "argument". Especially coming from a suspicious account.

You have both the tools and the choice to avoid all that. The definition of "toxic" and "grief" sure is in the eye of the beholder though.
As for what threads remain opens and don't, I guess the forum works in mysterious ways.
The game is very enjoyable and I understand its a pirate game. But there's a arena mode for pvp. I don't play this game religiously like some ppl because I can't do the pvp concept. I love this game and enjoy play it so very much. However I can be on an island turning things in literally no reward and someone will come along and kill me then sit on my ship and spawn kil me for 30mins? The game needs a pve or this game will die off. New players have no chance to progress or learn the game because of toxic players like this.
@etoblitusmiles In that situation where you was being spawn camped, why didn't you scuttle your ship and swap servers?
Unfortunately there is that type of player in SoT but they are few and far between and don't usually last long because people just swap servers to get away from them.
I don't agree it needs a PvE mode in order to survive. It's been going for 2 years relatively well using its PvPvE model. The whole concept is based on player interactions.
I think you also need to understand that the Arena isn't a 'PvP' mode, it's just a shortened version of the game for those that want to get to the action.
I agree with you completely. I posted months ago about the possibilty of activating a practice fighting mode that would allow you to practise with your teammates. It could be done as a bet for gold. And instead of a red flash you would get a different color flash to signify practicing. Maybe even switch the sword to a wooden one. I would rather them try that first then to switch to PvE only servers. I do not actually enjoy PvP, but I do like some of the extra risk it brings to the game. But sometimes you really just want casual gameplay.
@iceman-d18 I hear what you are saying and I would fully admit that selling loot on a PvE only server would not produce the same sense of relief it does now. However, with that said this game has grown significantly over the years and there are many things to do that do not require you to attack another crew. If you want to have a ship battle you can look for a skelly ship, megledon, or kraken. A lot of people play with their families for the adventure but do not want to get attacked by a bunch of cursing jerks. And A LOT of people, more than I think Rare expected, really like to play video games alone.
So it made a lot more sense in the beginning to require PvP, I mean you only had other players to shoot your cannon at.
But that is no longer the case. It should be considered in some special Rare way.@iceman-d18
I used to enjoy the balance of PvE and PvP until the new reaper faction. I just encountered a gallon with a levers up Reapers emissary flag and even though I saw them in time to get to my sloop and got a head start they just chased me through fog for and two islands that his me from view they caught up to me and just steamed rolled me. It's really not the fact that they got all my Athena loot, it's The fact that there was absolutely no options for me to escape these blood thirsty pirates even with my loot hidden below deck they could see my leveled up Athena flag and they could see my ship anywhere in the map. They could also out sail me because they had more sails and a full crew. I am a hardcore gamer since 83 and a big fan of all genres of games and have owned every system but never once have I encountered such a feeling of such disgust and anger from any multiplayer game.
It defies all sense that rare would want alienate casuals and families. I'm just glad my 8 year old autistic son was not playing with me because I would have a real hard time explaining how this fun game is allowing bullies to get rewarded for what most games would consider toxic. It's not even that they get rewarded it's that they were encouraged by Rare whom allows everyone in the map to get pinpointed. I'm hoping this is just a mistep on Rares part. Encouraging people to keep loot on their ship until they level up their emissary and then stearing people towards that ship is just ignorant. Sorry for the rant it is fresh on my my mind.
