Can we get PC only matchmaking please?

  • I think if Rare listened to the people who complained about matching against PC players, you guys should listen to us complain about matching against xbox players.

I have a few complaints about playing with Xbox players that I will list here:

    • xbox party chat stops us from communicating with them. Whether they are in your crew or the enemy crew this SUCKS. It ruins interactive moments because hey they are in this party you might as well be playing against NPC's
    • Being put on a crew with an xbox player means you will either have to hot mic constantly which is a disadvantage, or you have to be unable to interact with other crews if you join the party chat
    • Xbox players who cannot talk over the mic cannot event type. This leads to sessions where someone loads in, I say hey, get "Aye!" in the chat and that's the end of it. Simply a terrible experience
    • Their load times are terrible. I would like for my crew to not be at a disadvantage. If they get to play against only people with bad load times then I want to play with people with only good load times
    • Typically an xbox gamer will play on a television. This means they are further from the screen on average and as such have a smaller FOV. This means they are less capable of doing key tasks like spotting enemy ships, spotting tucked pirates and keeping situational awareness in a fight. Again, this can leave my crew at a disadvantage if I get matched against pc players with an xbox player on my team.
    • Xbox players are unable to enable push to talk, meaning background noise is a huge problem. I'm a pc gamer, and we all have standards with sound pollution. If you sound pollute in a pc game you get asked to fix it or you get kicked. If you sound pollute in sea of thieves? Well we can't kick you AND you cant fix it except to turn your microphone completely off which most xbox players will not do AND it leaves your crew at a disadvantage

Honestly I was against the xbox only matchmaking, well we got it, and now I like it because it means I've had to play with fewer boxxers. Please, please, please rare, don't make me play an interactive pirate game with a sea full of deaf mutes. Thanks.

my crew doesn't communicate in game, we are a mixed crew xbox/pc and use discord.

pc players can join xbox party chats.

    xbox players can type.

xbox can max fov at 90, its fine, you just turn your head.

    some xbox players use ssd's.

pc/xbox players have sound pollution issues.

  • xbox player can disable and enable their mics....im not sure about the original mic for the xbox cause its years ago i used that mic....typing with keyboard also no problem with the xbox, but at all should be no problem to find some pc player if u dont like to play with xbox users...

  • @captain-coel

    • Ok that's fine but this doesn't take into account random crews which this is aimed at. This whole post is about matchmaking not using external tools to solve a problem. Your answer also doesn't take into account the fact that being in an xbox live party on xbox prevents you from hearing players who are not in that party, which means enemy crews in a party cannot talk to you unless they plug a keyboard in
    • Yeah I know, I didn't say they couldn't and in fact I referenced the fact that you can in one of the points I made
    • It's possible if they plug a keyboard in, but it is EXTREMALLY rare, to the point where I think the number of xbox players with a keyboard plugged in can be completelly ignored from this discussion
    • Yes they can, but that doesn't mean that they do or should. If you are sat far from your TV it is likely you will have a lower FOV to prevent nausea. To say turn your head is dismissive of a straight advantage. I don't have to turn further to see something you don't I can just see it, that's a straight advantage. I have a higher chance of spotting something that a lower fov player will not such as tucks.
    • I'm sure they do, but if you compare mechanical to mechanical between xbox and pc the xbox ones average mechanical drive is so old it loads vastly slower compared to a pc's mechanical drive, and my m.2 nvme SSD will absolutely smoke the next best SATA SSD. I'm talking about averages not individual cases, if this wasn't a case of averages then you would never have to split the match making whatsover because I can play with an xbox controller on a toaster of a PC and claim just as you are that the matchmaking should never have been split.
    • It is impossible for an xbox player to enable push to talk, they have to take their hand off the controller to switch off the mic, this means that on average xbox players pollute sound more as they will not typically switch their mic off every time, as it is less ergonomic than a pc player simply pressing "v". This means that on the rare occasion I get a player who actually talks I hear chewing, their kids screaming, their mums yelling, hoovers, tv's, music, all kinds. It ruins the experience. I can just tell a pc player to enable push to talk they don't have to physically toggle a switch hanging from their neck

    @Weedstar-DeLuxe

    • I already referenced that they have to turn their whole microphone off at a switch, they are less likely to do this and this is a game over averages as I mentioned above to captain-coel.
    • Similarly a vast majority of xbox players have no keyboard plugged in to their console while they are playing. this isn't about what is possible it is about a consistent experience that I as a PC player am sick of
    • I cannot prevent myself from playing against xbox users in any way which some of these points reference specifically, and while I am sure I can find ways to only crew up with PC players exclusively that goes outside of the sea of thieves ecosystem of services. I think this is totally redundant to say as I am referencing matchmaking specifically and I hardly expect Rare and Microsofts official stance on the issue to be "We can't do it, we aren't good enough, you will have to rely on Discord the company to solve our problems for us"

But yeah I understand, again it's your own fault for playing with randoms and the fact we have cross-platform support in this game is a miracle by itself. Let's not go full PC Master.......just yet

  • @ricewynd

It's my own fault for playing with randoms? No, dude, it's software limitations caused by the Xbox One and hardware limitations caused by its peripherals. Me points equally address issues caused by playing WITH and AGAINST xbox players. I would encourage you to read the post before responding to the post.

I'm not trying to say that the PC environment is better for sea of thieves and in no way am I trying to blame the users of the xbox. If you want to enjoy sea of thieves on the xbox that's great, if you want to match only against other xbox players that's just fine. I'm sure there are a lot of valid arguments to be made for xbox only match making. Well I believe I am making a fair few valid points for PC only match making and that does not belittle my own argument to some kind of platform war or belittle me to some PC master hater.

  • I did read your points and to a point, I do agree with them. But yes, if you play with randoms you can never guarantee the quality of player you'll end up with. I have a friend I play with on Xbox who uses a widescreen and has a little button on his headset he can press to mute his mic when he's not talking.
Second to that point I've had enough experience with PC users just leaving their mic open to know it's not a problem exclusive to the xbox.

  • I 100% agree with OP. Interactions between crews can be such a fun experience, but it seems like 90% of the crews that I run into are in party chat, and can't hear/talk to me. I like to help new players that I see making common mistakes (hard anchored facing island, etc.) but am always met with confused players taking shots at me, because they can't hear me, and think that I'm there to attack them. I'm really looking forward to the Steam release, in hopes that I will start running into more crews that can effectively communicate. I also don't believe that it is crazy to ask for a PC only opt out. Xbox users were granted this privilege, so why not PC users?

  • Yes to this, im tired of xboxusers in general. - And i don't want to be in a crossplay server with them, they are to clunky with moving around and [mod edit] ...i can tell right away if its an xboxuser or not.

We want an OPT out of these people!

  • Yes, let's just remove PC off of Xbox live completely once it goes live on steam holidays 2020.

    A result for everyone!

That's not true. You can enter a party chat with another xbox player and still be able to use the in-game vocal chat as push-to-talk. Played 2 years with one of my friend who was on Xbox and I could do both (but he couldn't).

  • I enjoy trolling the open mic users. I always find that Xbox users will have sound coming from the TV.

Solution? Bind your "F" button to scroll wheel or a mouse macro. I spam the ships bell so fast I'm sure I'm driving someone crazy or someone else listening has to deal with it.

I just let the Xbox users do all the work for me. I sit back and relax and tell them what to do. Nothing going on then find some players who understand the basics of sailing and looting.

"You can enter a party chat with another xbox player and still be able to use the in-game vocal chat as push-to-talk..."

I'm on PC as well, and it appears to be hit and miss, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. When it doesn't, I try exiting Party chat, and still get no audio out in Game chat. As matter of fact, last night it worked early in my session and later failed.

Interaction between players is one of the biggest aspects of this game, and the intermittent loss of it is probably the most annoying "feature".

I think Rare and Xbox need to get on the same page and fix this...

  • While communication is important, I don't think it warrants any more splitting of the player-base.

A lot of the issues described in this Topic aren't exclusive to PC-Xbox. They occur Xbox-Xbox, and PC-PC even though less common.

Headsets that came with the original systems (don't think the 1X comes with any) all had a controller mount with a mute switch. Only a simple thumb movement to switch/talk/switch, not much different than push-to-talk. Heck, we run into plenty of PC hot mics as well since they too have also have inline mute switches, mutable booms, or no mute at all...

There are Xbox players who use KB/M, and there are PC users who utilize Controllers. I know a couple of older PC players whose mouse sensitivity is as bad as the default Controller settings and they have to constantly lift/slap their mouse up and down to turn.

What they need to do is overhaul the Xbox Party Chat system entirely... It shouldn't lock a player into only communicating within that group. There should be a set of options for Party Only, Game Chat Only, or Party + Game Chat. I understand MS wanting Party Chat to be safe and secure, but they shouldn't take the options away from players, especially not with how common the multiplayer experience is now.

They have the ability to "quickly" toggle between Party/Game, but that is a joke which ends up putting you in limbo where you can't communicate in Game or Party and have to toggle back...

  • @archangel-timmy Anecdotally I find far more people with open mics, chewing noises etc are coming from xbox players and not pc players, because we have fine grain control over things like voice activation threshold or just enabling push to talk and binding it to mouse buttons or just keyboard buttons. Again, I'm not blaming the players I just don't think the ergonomics are there for xbox players to effectively push to talk. That toggle mute button requires you to take a thumb off the stick so you either cant move or cant aim in order to unmute so people just don't do it, and that's a best case scenario where they are using one of those adapters.

I didn't actually say anything about form of input beyond being able to type. A huge majority of xbox players can not type to you so if they don't have a mic then they have no other options.

I'm not talking about ability to aim or input devices that's a ridiculouslly long debate that I'm not interested in I just want to talk about things that are easily measurable and factual in order to keep the conversation sane.

I also don't mind "splitting the player base" if it means I get to only play with PC players, and that argument didn't really work before so I think we can assume it's a none argument at this point. You can only play with 5 other ships at a time. no matter how small you split the player base you will always be able to get a session this is not an mmo. Splitting the player base has an immeasurably small impact to the way you would match make as the lobbies are absolutely tiny. Even if there were only 100 people in western Europe playing on pc at a time that's still what...4 servers absolutely minimum assuming they are all galleons and all with 4 crew members, can we say realistically for every 100 people playing we have about 6-7 servers? I would be confident in thinking there are at least 1000 pc players in western Europe at most times of the night, having 60-70 active lobbies is more than enough in my opinion.

That's weird, I've never had a problem like that.

  • Isn't this game coming to steam? That's pretty much going to give the PC market a wider supply of PC players, chances of playing with more PC players would be better.

  • @waveybish My entire post wasn't entirely directed at the initial post, so I apologize it came across that way.

I brought the input in because someone a few posts above me mentioned they were tired of Xbox players because their movements are clunky when it is not limited to console players.

A lot of the issues mentioned exist on both sides, granted they are more prominent on one side than the other, I was merely pointing out it wasn't only the one side.

  • @reapinglegion 😏

  • pc users are like the 'white males' of SoT:

Why would you even use something like that on a computer game forum?

  • If you want PC only servers you will get server migration every 20mins while only playing with around 30% of the player base.

I wish I could afford a gaming PC.

Be thankful for what we have. An amazing crossplay game.

Not if you ask alot of Xboxusers....they bought a crossplay game then complained about it. ^_^

To incite controversy and then use the backlash for self-validation.

  • @waveybish i think you are just mistaking the incredibly high amount of incompetent day one players that you see constantly and just group them all into xbox. I feel that xbox servers in adventure was not a smart call because frankly it ruins the experience. If I am in a close battle with a pc crew and i narrowly lose at least i have the satisfaction that they have easier shots to hit, no aim drift, load times that are under 2 minutes etc.
Frankly, if you hate xbox players so much than don't play with them? You are literally asking to be nerfed, but I'm sorry theres noobs in pc.
Finally, if you are looking for ways to talk with others use discord. Game chat is fun when they are spawn killable but literally is a disadvantage in a fair fight. No other crew is going to hear you and say "Hey guys, they're in game chat, let's go into game chat and do the same thing! In general, just join a pC oNly dIsCoRd and just queue up there. And, if ur mad that your enemy is day 1 noobs, I'm sorry but its the games fault for not getting healthy numbers with decent players.

    We were sold a lie.
It turned out to be not as compatible as it should be.

    This thread is funny though.

Wants to play with PC only, but on XBOX LIVE! 😂

  • @archangel-timmy No need to apologise my guy I took no offence!

  • @retribution213

I think it's toxic to call new players incompetant.

I don't hate anybody let alone hating someone just for being an xbox user. Disliking the experience of playing with/against them is what I am talking about, and not playing with them is..what I'm proposing in the first place so I just simply don't understand what kind of angle you are taking here?

To reitterate, I know that there are alternative methods of finding a crew outside of the microsoft ecosystem of services. I use discord. I have a crew I regularly play with. My complaint is specifically with matchmaking. Discord is just completely irrelevant to the discussion in my opinion and does not even solve the problem of other crews being unable to hear you or the myriad of other issues I have raised related to playing against xbox players.

I have absolutely no problem with anybody based on their skill level and I would politely ask you to not put words or sentiments into my mouth thanks.

  • Xbox players on average are just horrible compared to PC players,
They move slow, they interact with items slower, they fight and shoot slower, you can tell Xbox users from PC players very quickly.
That being said, there is no difference between the Xbox and PC except newer components.
You can play on an old PC and have the exact same slow loading times and horrible 30fps that the Xbox gives you.
Money is the only determining factor, you don't have that much money so you buy a sub standard Xbox, then tell everybody how good it is lol, or if you have $4000 you buy a top of the line tower and run it at 144fps blowing the 30fps out of the water.

Xbox users cried and cried about how it wasn't fair and how PC users have an unfair advantage to the point the get their own servers now with opt out (which are being heavily exploited for the current leveling with absolutely no competition, farming alliance servers getting 3 of the 4 factions to 75 in under a week)

Not sure why any of those Xbox users would have a problem with this, they have their own servers to exploit and farm, why not let the PC community have their own servers?

  • Aww, the comraderie and understanding in this thread is really heartwarming. It just makes me feel good to be a part of this loving community.
