Will i get the game again for Free ? (STEAM QUESTION)

  • Now Bethesda is giving Fallout 76 for free on steam for those who bought it on Bethesda launcher. So I'm asking if it will be the same with Sea fo Thieves. When I bought the game on Microsoft store will I have it on Steam for free?

  • @expired96 No

  • Steam and MS not linked. You have to buy the “new” version.
Tho maybe Rare will have a link to steam and if linked to your MS account it give a discount for transferring pirate? Maybe.

  • @burnbacon I dont think that they will let us to play it on steam if we have it on windows but your progress is linked between Steam and Windows.

  • Hey dude,

Thanks for the question but this has been questioned a lot lately and no one really has the answer.

Also I doubt we get a Steam copy... yes Fallout we got a free Steam access which is amazing but Microsoft is a different company and it’s their choice. If we own Halo MCC, when released to Steam did we have to purchase or get a free copy? No! We had to purchase again on Steam for the same access... This is what I expect here to happen but maybe Rare wanted to do what Bethesda done... we have to wait.

An FAQ was said to be in the works... last week or so and we’re all still waiting.

Secondly a page for Steam has been setup here: https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/112125/sea-of-thieves-coming-to-steam-discussion-and-feedback/152

So expect your page to be moved there or closed by a moderator.

  • Afaik, you don't need a Steam copy, the steam version will launch the Xbox app and the game when you play it.

You can already link your MS account and your Steam account, which should sync up your friendslists so long as the people on your Steam friendslist have linked their accounts.

Then it's just a case of organising yourselves and setting sail.

  • @menphuess I believe SonicBob gave an answer on Reddit - you will have to buy it again.

Steam and the Microsoft Store are seperate platforms, if you want to transition to Steam you will need to pickup the game there

  • I wonder how crossplay works from steam to xbox services..

Not something I've really kept up with the past while.

  • I don't think it'll be a 'Steam' version. Take Assassins Creed. If you buy it through Steam, it links up to Uplay, where you play from there. I figure it'll be the same. Steam will just be a launcher.

Seems weird you'd have to pay for it again if you're already playing on PC then, no?

  • @tre-oni I think it's just a new place to buy the game tbh.

Better exposure for the title for people who only buy games through steam but nothing more than an additional storefront and an alternative way of accessing the same servers that everyone else is on.

It'll still be xbox's ToS that govern online play for example.

It's exciting news for the community, but if you already own SoT I don't think the steam version is really aimed at you.

I'm gonna leverage the steam release to strong arm a few hold outs into trying it, but I'm not gonna buy the game again or anything. At first I thought I might, but on consideration there's no real reason to.

It's not like I can't just arrange to play with people through steam and then share my xbox gamertag with them.

Why does it seem strange you have to pay for it again? If you bought a digital copy of a film from Amazon you cant expect to log on to Hulu and watch it there.

I don't think you understood what I was saying..

My post was in direct response to something.. If you buying it a second time on Hulu still ran it through some Amazon media player, it would seem really pointless to have bought it a second time, as opposed to simply linking your accounts.

If you're buying it on steam for it to just play and launch right through the xbox service.. if you've already been playing it that way when you end up having your mandatory log in to their service.. You've essentially bought the game through the same service twice.

  • The Steam version of Sea of Thieves is the same as the Microsoft version. No you can't get the Steam Edition for free if you have it on the MS store. I don't know why this is a thing, but if you really want the Steam Edition, you can grab it cheaper through g2a.com.
