VR support?

  • Ive recently been playing a lot of sea of thieves and a lot of VR but is there any plans to put the two together?

  • Rare said they tried it, but it was very hard to play and they got sick by playing. I played sailing games on VR and i can agree, that SoT would be a puke fiesta.

  • Honestly I would just be happy with a "demo" in VR, like the Maiden Voyage for example.
Just to imagine what it would be like to be in the SOT world...

But the full game in VR ? Nah I'm not so sure about that. At least not within the same servers of everyone else.
Because doing SOT in VR means they have 2 choices:

    • Motion controls, meaning the sword combat would be completely different from what we have now in the regular game... Impossible to balance in a PVP encounter between a regular and VR player. The two version would essentially be two different games like Superhot and Superhot VR are totally different. Therefore, different servers but best VR experience.
    • No motion controls, meaning you play the game with a controller or the Kb/m while being seated with a VR Headset on your head... Not the best VR experience to be honest. Elite: Dangerous worked well with this system because the whole purpose of the game made sense: you're only piloting your ship (and this worked much better with a HOTAS too).

To that you have to think about other problems like @ShanickRedbeard said. Those problems can only be fixed if they make an entirely different game with VR in mind. I just don't imagine myself sailing, sprinting, running, jumping, cannoning myself like I do now in VR.

EDIT: Also when playing in VR you don't usually play 4-5h in a straight shot... And the pace of SOT doesn't allow for quick session so... Yeah, SOT VR should be a different game. That requires time and ressources and, even though I'd love to experience it, I think I'd just prefer Rare to focus on the game we have now :)

  • Wouldn't be playable by most humans.

The amount of movement is too much for VR, between the sea rocking the boat and all the platforming that's kinda built in, VR would make ya lose your lunch.

They'd need to build an entirely different game for VR, with calmer seas and dramatically scaled back mobility. Might be fun, but it'd be a bit of a development sideshow.

VR still has a very low install base, so they'd be unlikely to make their money back from the development costs.

In the future, if we ever figure out how to solve the VR motion sickness conundrum, then I'd love to try a VR SoT, until then, I'd rather my Oculus didn't smell like puke.

  • I get motion sickness playing normal games in vr. Imagine vr sea of thieves! 🤢🤮

  • @boxcar-squidy there have been multiple applications to help with motion sickness, programs or medicine

  • @kronos2945 said in VR support?:

Yeah, there have. None have been 100% successful. A significant number of people still experience motion sickness and VR apps are designed specifically to avoid lateral head motion as this provokes motion sickness in EVERYBODY. How do you avoid lateral head movements in a game where your boat rocks back and forth from waves?

They'd need to significantly redesign SoT to make it tolerable in VR.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to play it if it were available and comfortable to play. The technology just isn't there yet as far as I understand it (my limited understanding comes from having this very discussion with friends of mine who are VR developers, so admittedly, it's not my area of expertise and I'm happy to be corrected if you know more about it than I do)

  • I also think development-wise it probably wouldn't be profitable to put so much work to adapt a version of the game only a minority of players will have access to... and I say this as a VR player and enthusiast myself.

Been curious to try Battlewake though!

  • No Man’s Sky was able to pull it off to some extent. I have no idea if SoT would make me sick but I’d love the chance to find out. It would be wonderful to look up from my mast and see the night sky in VR. Stand on the summit of Thieve’s Haven and watch ships pass by in the sunset. On the other hand, there are probably more important projects for Rare’s team to focus on,

  • VR SoT would be cool and motion sickness would be a non-issue for adept players as its something you just get over after dedicated VR use. Still wouldn't be enough to bring me back to the game though. To many choices have been made that make the game unwelcoming to new or returning players.

I mean, as a separate side game it could be a cool demo, but merging it with the main game would be a nightmare. Can you imagine PVP? Fighting bunny-hoppers will be enough to make you dizzy lol. People will ask for VR servers šŸ˜†

  • @bloodybil You are correct. And threads asking for PvE VR servers.

  • I've never been motion sick from VR ever, and yet the thought of this just makes me sick tbh lol,

This would not sit well with anyones brains, ever.

Not saying though it wouldn't be amazing getting knocked off ship and seeing a bunch of sharks in your face, or VR fighting a kraken..
