Why is Open Crew just so bad?

  • Honestly, it scares me. Firstly, I'm primarily a solo player. I don't have anybody that is interested in the game as of yet, though that'll change with Steam. I enjoy solo slooping for the most part. Thought I'd change that up tonight, and went open crew.

It was both an enlightening, and terrible, experience. First player that joined blows up the gunpowder I had in the crows nest (was bringing it to a ruby mermaid), then leaves right after.

Second player joined when I was in Cannon Cove. I come back to see him using the fire bombs to light the ship up, before he to leaves.

Third was obviously new. Couldn't read a map, didn't know where to place treasure, kept using a sword on gunpowder skellies, kept dropping anchor, you name it. I tried to help by explaining things, and showing what is what, but they completely ignored me.

After that, no thank you. I'll stick with solo slooping. But really, though, why is Open Crew such a terrible experience? I get it's a multiplayer game, and you'll run into a lot of different people, but just three different people in an hour and a half, and all three are bad in their own way? I will not be doing that again.

  • i agree i think the devs should revork it... make an lobby or filter... for the people want join of your same lelvel, not an randoom level, it make very frustrating evrythink

  • @ghost-of-rhyza
The game attracts the lowest common denominator of gamer and with it being on game pass and the whole world being off atm you have a perfect storm.

There are no checks and balances so the toxic rule the waves.

And to think originally there was only going to be open mode!!

    Yet more genius from Rare!!

  • If you don't mind not getting anything done it can be fun to observe all the strange people.

  • aaaaah open crew the place where everyone act like an ape what a strange place to be !
Yes of course sometime you can meet some respectful ape or actually even some decent human being but surely its something or someplace special :D

  • Open Crew is really really an bad experience! I love story’s from me on an active Fort working to kill all Skellys, but one guy is sailing away with the whole galleon!

  • @ghost-of-rhyza Can I humbly make a suggestion, if you try joining a galleon crew instead of letting people join your sloop, you may have a much better experience.

In open match making part of the fun is meeting all the wild card and loose cannon personalities. There's also some really great people to meet out there too.

  • I have been in a few good open crews (sloop I may add). I get noobs and I get veterans. It’s a varied mix, but it’s ok because I can solo sloop anyway so it matters not their skill level. Brigs and galleons on an open crew? Useless.

  • Havent really had a bad experience with open crew, just stay the voyage and jump to another if i do. After serveral jumps i usually find a reasonable crew for the session. It is interesting getting varied crews.
Just wish more hardened pirates use open crews; the more that use it the better probability of getting a good crew.

  • The problem with open crew is you’ll have players who want to still play the game solo but have their team to do the work.

Also the players who join and do not have a mic but either resort to not talk AT ALL or only talk via text chat...

The above is the worst issue in the game and very off putting.

The game is played with teams and mics communicating. If get into an open lobby, start talking and get them talking, if not then quit and find a new session, it’s what I do.. most of the time I will do the ‘looking for group’ and find players with mic required... again, they have a mic but do not use it, so I kick them from the party before inviting to the game because I refuse to play with these players not using mics or prefer to text chat which is the best thing ever when in combat.

Sadly there is no feature that can be added to correct and force them to actually use them unless they bring in a voice chat afk thing like VoIP platforms and AFK.

Not sure what can be done but yeah, this is the only problem.

Yesterday I did have a guy who joined in the party, said two words and as we where setting up for fort of the dammed, he ran off and sold the ritual skull and quit... again a rare circumstance we get this human waste people not worth oxygen but you tend not to get these people.

  • Hey man Id love to sail with you bro. Hit me up!

  • @menphuess That's just silly; voice chat does not make anything automatically better in any way, shape or form.

  • @yawnymoose agreed, met many efficient silent crews.
You can very quickly see how good they are and follow a common goal very easily.

  • @yawnymoose said in Why is Open Crew just so bad?:

No it does not make everything better but in a game designed around player communication, team work and actually built in mics... the only reason text chat was put in is because was because players not talking.

Also in this specific game, I stand by it making this game better. If the person is belligerent and just yelling, being annoying or anything like that, then yes I would meet them but otherwise team play, communication and overall positive voice chats makes this game enjoyable.

The devs even said in previous videos about mics and working together.

  • @ghost-of-rhyza ya its terrible! some people just ruin it for everyone!

  • @ghost-of-rhyza

I think the main reason Open Crew attracts such toxic people is, perversely, because it's so easy to do.

Trolls/toxic players tend to be lazy creatures. Discord, LFG's, and other external means of finding like-minded players require a small investment in both time and 'ego' (there are greater social consequences for misbehaving) before you can start your game.

In contrast, open crew can be accessed directly from the menu. This ease makes it the 'go-to' option for a bored troll to jump in, mess with someone, and leave.

The lesson; use external resources to find crewmates.

  • @ghost-of-rhyza As bad as open crews can be... a lot of my awesome stories come from playing with randoms. 😂

I know how bad it is, for the first six to eight months I quit more games than I played in hopes of finding a decent crew -- and I found not so decent crews like 80% of the time. Open crews just put you at the mercy of matchmakings and we still need filters.

I didn't start rolling with a crew until like September of launch year and it changed my experience tenfold; I was actually able to hit Pirate Legend (it felt like a pipedream beforehand) and I even got to Athena 9ish over the coming months. The biggest game changer was just finding a crew that didn't complain about me not having a mic and we just got things done.

Not every random crew mate is bad... you juwt have to give them a chance.

  • @menphuess

Just keep in mind that some people can't use mics.

  • @menphuess No, the non verbal communication was added to give a select few players a voice; it's how I hit PL and Athena 9... by communicating the best way I can and being an effective listener.

  • Aye many countries out there and many don't speak English fluently so are off mic but it's never a problem. I mean i think a Pirate Legend and definately a PLA10 doesnt really need a mic to be essential.

I also give obvious newbies their time they need to explore the ship and press everything to see what it does.

Its just the very few trolls you may have to jump ship from occasionally.

  • But this is what rare want right?, people to play together.

  • Beacuse it's the go-to mode when being new or/and want people to play with.

By the nature of online games trolls that got nothing better to do abuse the system aswell and ruins it for others.

  • You get more trolls and brand new players who don't know whats up through open.

But a bad Discord crew where people are actually arguing with each other is worse than any open crew trolls.

Don't be afraid to just leave a crew if it's not a good fit for how you want to play. No matter where you found them.

  • Ohhhh the Joy's of open crew..... you never know what your getting into.... load in and your on fire, floating next to a mermaid... another crew spawn killing you, blunderbombs to the face, musical pow wows as the ship slams a island, 9 out of 10 times it's a waste of time. But can be very entertaining to watch.

  • @Ghost-of-Rhyza if u want to play with other peeps add me on discord, i am The Negotiator#2606

  • Yes, playing with an open crew is like playing Russian roulette ...
It is often fine, but sooner or later it is very bad

To look for crews, I suggest you find the Discord channel of SoT, they are normally well organized, you find a lot of different people and of all levels of experience, all with microphone and desire to play really

  • The quality of crews used to vary more. When the game first game out it was open crews only. So more serious and experienced players would show up in your crew. Also this made crew hopping till you found a good one much easier. If you kept changing crews sooner, or later you'd find a good one. I don't know about others, but this is how I met most of the regulars I played with. I still play Sea of Thieves with people I friended in the game during the first 3 months to this day. When Closed Crews became a thing players just started hanging with their regulars, or people they knew were good. So the Open Crews were largely left with noobs and people not serious about the game.

Now that doesn't mean it's impossible to find a good open crew, but it's rare. A crew looking for a good player is more likely to use LFG(Looking For Group) because they can check the players stats as well and talk to them in a party before letting them in their crew. I recommend using LFG if you're looking to play with others instead of going Solo.

  • Hmm.. I made it to pirate legends only in open crew.. I found text chat the most useful tool in the game... I find if they can read they probably might be more helpful... Sea of thieves is a shared world game not shooting on sight makes it one of the most interesting games out currently... Text chat is the perfect way to talk to other crews..
But it is interesting seeing how many people drop the anchor to stop the boat thinking that's how boat work in real life... It the main reason why we are not allowed parachutes on airplanes... People who can't save them self can't save others also.
