Is really important to talk to other pirates in game and this can help you from sinking sometimes. Obviously, doing it in a polite manner will increase the chances.
The other day somebody told me he was doing a tale when we were stealing things from their ship and we gave the items back. However, we decided to increase his Tall Tale difficulty as a penalty and we took all the supplies he had, so he could only sail with a cannon, a banana and a plank.
He later send us a message thanking us for the penalty and that he completed the Tale successfully. He said he enjoyed it even more because he had to stay really focus on his surroundings until he found some supplies.
I am really proud he decided to communicate with us mid battle. We had loot to cash in an he could end the Tale.
