Ships deviating from heading. Annoying or fun?

  • You set a course to go NE.
You cook a fish and get back up and you are sometimes still heading NE, or you are heading NW, or south!

I get that the waves are doing this but does anybody find it annoying?

Now as for 'realism' let me just remind you that you can sail into the wind and still sail forwards, so realistic sailing isnt at the front of the agenda for this game.

Woukd you be happy to have a ship keep its heading until the wheel changed or do you see this feature as a team exercise, have soneone tend the helm now and then? Etc etc.

Now personally i dont mind if it stays but if they did get rid of drifting i would be pretty pleased all the same.

It can at times be annoying depending where you are headed.
Its in no way a chore, but it is just one less thing you gotta micro manage.

  • @daringclarky it is a key aspect to sailing and chase dynamics, as it simply is more difficult to optimize your ship and need to adapt. To me this provides more depth to sailing and do believe it should stay.

  • @cotu42 Maybe they should expand upon it then maybe?

    The waves never change direction.
Perhaps they could change the wave direction to accurately reflect the wind.

This way, its ever-changing and a little more dynamic.

When sailing you can compensate by turning in a little more or less from which you can learn from the angles of the wind.

It would add more depth, yet reward those who study it, invaluable knowledge and a competitive edge.
Kinda like how a person who knows the fastest sail speeds vs their position against somebody who doesnt.

Would that be better or worse?

If the waves change with the wind, isn't that less dynamic since the waves and wind will now always be going in similar directions?

  • @d3adst1ck Technically yes but still more dynamic than the waves never changing direction at all

  • @daringclarky I wouldn't mind better indicators of how the waves will influence the ship.

The behavior of the ship can already be evaluated and the steering adjusted to create a fairly straight line while I let my ship take care of itself while I go out on an adventure. Though for combat chasing, consistent adjustment is required to get the edge and best combined with people at the sails to adjust the angles. I call it power steering! ;)

You cook a fish and get back up and you are sometimes still heading NE, or you are heading NW, or south!

And that's why you set your wheel tilted in a direction to compensate for wave-deviation... In order to sail straight without needing anyone at the wheel. It works in every direction, except directly against the waves... I mean theoretically there is a way you can set your wheel to sail straight against the waves, but it requires rocket-science accuracy to pull it off... So i usually stay at the wheel when sailing directly against the waves... But that doesn't necessarily mean you have to, as long as you can figure the fine-tuning.

  • It keeps your feet wet, so I'm not complaining.

Do you know of any youtube videos showing how to do this?

Ive tried but ive never got it spot on.
But a video showing this could really help me do this better. :)

So sadly, i don't... I learned it all on my own. xD

I don't even know the official name for this technique, so i have no idea how to search for a video guide. :P

  • Waves always go NW to SE, so you just have to factor wind direction in relation to that to better guess which way it might pull. I compensate by up to 1.5 spokes on the wheel, and not usually more than that. It seems to work for me.
