Sword Balancing

  • I've been playing a lot of PvP recently and am wondering why the sword seems to be so useless. I'm addicted to the sword charge so I can't change, but the sword just isn't good for PvP.
Ladders- Takes too long to finish off opponent, bad compared to blunderbuss, sometimes enemies board anyway
Already boarded opponents- Enemies can run all around the ship since the sword doesn't fully stun, can take ages to kill without additional options
Range- The sword is a fast weapon, but you must take an enemy by surprise to kill them. If you are spotted, the defender will have plenty of time to pull out their own option (especially true with the lowered sword stun) and kill.
One of the things that I think is weird is that guns can still stop a sword user from completing their attack. Now that the sword can't do the large stun, why should weapons? The first step to balancing the cutlass is making the sword charge scarier. Any stray bullet or blunderbuss pellet shouldn't completely destroy the cutlass's attack.
Also, Snipers are too useful (high damage, range, and still useful at close combat) and the Blunderbuss is broken (one shot, better range than sword, knockback)

  • My first point is that the sword doesn't need to be and shouldn't be as strong as the guns in PvP. The sword is the uncontested king of PvE as well as being the only weapon with utility on top of being a weapon.

The sword shouldn't interrupt attacks because that means perma stun(guns are one shot and done so it's not as bad). I can kinda agree that guns shouldn't either. Interrupting the sword lunge is kinda ridiculous, but I think the problem has more to do with the lunge being poorly designed and leaving you way to open.

Another problem is that hopping is just honestly broken in this game. Especially with a sword. Jumping needs to be more limited and deliberate. Traversal needs to be significantly improved as well to deal with clipping.

Guns are completely fine as they are. They are so simple that other than hit reg, even Rare can make them work well enough. The sword on the other hand is a complete mess. It needs more dynamic attacks such as a running stab and the lunge needs be removed in favor of a faster heavy attack that doesn't let you "leap tall building in a single bound.". If it were up to me, the sword would have a 1 hit back stab as well. It wouldn't be instant(probably an icon like you get for picking up chests and such) but if you are able to sneak up behind someone and stay there for 1-2 seconds I think you should be able to kill them.

  • @grumpywolf1106 Do you know how to:

    1. block and counter effectively?
    2. sword dodge?
    3. running sword slash?
    4. sword cancel?
    5. advanced sword charge?
    6. dodge through an enemy?

If you said no to ANY of these, then you are not ready.

The sword is easily the most versatile and mobile of any of the weapons.

*seriously Rare? You censored his name!? It's not right having to misspell it...

  • @galactic-geek Honestly I haven't thought about sword jumping through someone, although it makes sense.

It's actually really easy - you just sword dodge towards your opponent. To sword dodge, just hold block, move in any direction, and while still holding the block, press jump (block+move+jump). 😉

So the next time a pirate blocks the door to the Captain's Cabin preventing you from getting their treasure, prove them wrong by stabbing them in the back. 😈

  • @galactic-geek Yeah I know how to do it now lol just forgot that an opponent is practically intangible when you're in the air.

  • I love the game don’t get me wrong but the did break the sword 3-4 months ago when they tried fixing double gunning. It’s clunky now. It’s still usable and you can work your way around it but I do agree swords need fixed. I rather have double gunning than this clunky sword

    They're actually not - a regular jump won't work.
