Serious question, How do you get a foothold to be able to do anything in this game? I downloaded the game last night and played for 20 minutes today , in that time period my ship was sank twice and I got sniped off the deck once. Just starting out you cant even move on the sea without more experienced players hosing you almost immediately. So seriously, how do you get started?

Did you try the Maiden voyage? Good place to learn how to operate your pirate and your ship. If you have, check the LFG on the X-Box app to find other players. Make it known you're new and looking to learn. Plenty of pirates out there have no problem taking a young buck under their wing to show them the ropes.
Don't trust anyone from another ship. Don't trust anyone in open crews even from your own ship. Keep your head on a swivel to see other ships getting close. Haul it before they get to you. If you're on the sloop, you're faster against the wind than any other ship. Turn your sails straight forward (yes, that doesn't make sense, but it works). If you have a constant problem on the server, back out and jump in again. You won't likely land in the same server.
Start off with the Maiden Voyage for a grand tour of the basics.
After that look for a crew, solo is for the more experienced or those who enjoy a challenge.
@biggyslims as previous stated maiden and looking for group dont do open crew will not get you anywhere instead make a lfg post on the xbox and ask if anyone is willing to join and teach you the ropes and to add you are learning pvp when people attack you but what we all should remember its a game dont get mad if you lose we all take the L sometime there is no shame in that this i tell every new player i help teach them how to play that number one rule lost treasure is like milk no sense in crying over it theres plenty to be had

Keep scanning the horizon and keep your distance from other ships until you can handle yourself in combat. The other ships will stand out a little darker on the horizon.
If they get on deck and are killing you when you respawn, go into your crew options and scuttle your ship. You will be given a brand new ship with supplies somewhere else on the map. They can only grab treasure you have not turned in yet, not your gear or gold. Honestly, unless you are hoarding several hours of loot on your ship other players can’t really do much meaningful to you. As long as you do not treat dying and sinking as something terrible, and remember that you have all the tools you need to reach your goals if you are creative, then you will be okay.
