Idea Time #7: Toggleable Glow!

  • DISCLAIMER: I do not use the glowing sets.

In my opinion, no player should be punished for choosing how they look. Players who like the glowy stuff should have an equal chance to do things as players who don't like the glowy stuff.

    My proposal:

-Turn off your handheld lantern to toggle the glow on all character customizations (Clothes, Vanity, Equipment, Weapons)

-Turn off all of your ship's top deck lanterns to toggle the glow on all ship customizations (Liveries, Utilities, and Flags)

That is all. What do you guys think?

  • Why not apply the Occam's Razor principle and just not wear/use glowing stuff when you don't want to glow?

Entities should not be multiplied without necessity - William of Ockham

  • @viperishemu2992 Players shouldn't have to change their clothes for an advantage, especially such a big one. A player who shines like the moon is going to stand out from underwater while swimming to a ship, where a player with darker clothes will not.

A player shouldn't be forced to stand out just for choosing the look they like!

  • Is this a serious suggestion?

Wanna be a ninja? Dress like a ninja! Not a Las Vegas showgirl!

  • I actually really like the ghost pants but I hate the neon green glow. Looks like your pirate bleeds predator blood.

  • Most players understand what they are getting when they don a glow in the dark outfit or ship. If they're willing to wear it, then it means that they're willing to accept the associated risk. I'm sorry, but you can't have your cake and eat it too.

  • Eh i think thats the whole point, to stand out! i mean the ashen dragon set is WOW but thats the point youre showing the other pirtaes you shouldnt be messed with!

  • @klutchxking518
Bad idea: If you're going to knowingly don clothes or gear that GLOW, you're going to be visible.

Why not just wear all black and no feathery hat?

What, they need to change the game because you can't control your bling? hahaha

    Ridiculous.

  • @vasduten I actually hate the glowy stuff, so please don't put this on me. I call those who use it "Glowsticks". Although it gives them a disadvantage for no reason other than selection of clothes.

Let me ask you: Why should a player be punished for choosing the look they like?

And to answer your question, the reason I don't want to wear all black is A: I like having a bit of color and B: I like the way the glowy stuff looks, I just wish that the glow effect was toggleable. Example: I love the shape and color scheme of theForsaken Ashes hat, but I do not like the orange glow.

  • @fllw3rb0y Exactly. But I've asked many players and a lot of them love the glowing cosmetics, for their shape and color, just hate that it punishes them in certain situations.

Why should a player be punished for choosing the look they like?

Because they choose to look like a glowstick... How is this hard to understand. Just because something is cosmetic doesn't mean that it can't give advantage or disadvantage.

  • @betsill That takes it beyond a cosmetic. At that point it becomes an advantage not to use it and is unfair to players who wish to use it.

ugh... This is why the whole "it's only cosmetic." nonsense is particularly annoying. Cosmetics affect and ARE a part of gameplay. Cosmetics can give advantage or disadvantage irl or in games.

  • Funny thread.
People and or ships that glow need not to hide!
People that wanna tuck need not to glow.

  • So I run the Elements of Power livery, (including the lightbulb capstan, wheel and cannons lol...) I don't really see it giving me away a whole lot. I've left my ship sailing off at the end of a session and myself, I can't see the extra glowy bits. Can on the PL stuff tho. By the time I can see the glowy bits of your ship I'm already panicking cause you're too close.

Punished? Whom is being punished? I'm assuming that you dress yourself? How do you come by the word "punished"?

If a player wants to glow, they can wear glowing clothes. If they want to be sneaky, they can wear darker clothes. You are asking Rare to create a mechanic that is already in the game. It's called the Clothing Chest.

    Ergo Occam's Razor.

You can wear non-glowing colors without having to resort to black. In fact, I would argue that black is a terrible color choice, because it makes your silhouette more visible in brighter areas. Instead, I would recommend something like blue or green that blends with the water or plants far better. Me? I don't like to glow, but I do like to stand out - that's why I use red; it helps hide the blood.

    "But I shot him!"
"No you didn't; there's no blood!"

  • Put an Order of Souls brazier on each ship
Put a skull on the brazier to control the glow
The glowier the skull the glowier the ship

You could have one brazier to control the hull and another for sails

  • I wear all the shiny things and adorn my ship with everything that lights up and never feel at a disadvantage. When I feel like being shady I just dress in all black to cover my pasty skin and go dark.

I understand your point though. I think a good option would be if we could save outfits. So it’s a quick swap. Some for peacocking around and others for being a scoundrel.

  • @klutchxking518

If you like glowing stuff wear glowing stuff.
If you don't like glowing stuff don't wear glowing stuff.

I don't see the issue, nobody is being punished for wearing anything... you are fully aware of the clothing you pick and what suits you, that is why you choose to wear it no?

  • @cotu42 I think the problem is you can't flaunt your athena status without glowing stuff. Fortunately for me I got the Guardian of Athena's Fortune Title :)

Actually you can, just wear the purple gear? It is actually a better indication than the ghost set as well you can earn Athena levels and buy them before being a legend.

Purple gear is default Pirate Legend. It has nothing to do with Athena Status.

  • @boomtownboss you have a title for non flashy exposition, if you want to flaunt than do so in style. You are an Athena 10 and want to flaunt... Isn't the whole point of showing others what you have?

  • @viperishemu2992 The ones being punished are the ones trying to sneak up on my ship while wearing a beacon. They shouldnt have to completely change their outfit to do what any other player can

  • @cotu42 Say you wear all the glowy stuff, but one day, you decide to go board a ship. Either you change your entire outfit for this one occasion, or you get spotted and killed because you were glowing.

  • @klutchxking518 said in Idea Time #7: Toggleable Glow!:

Sounds like you finally understand. If you want stealth, dress appropriately. If you want flash and style, then wear the glowing clothes. There is no punishment as you HAVE A CHOICE. Not a hard concept to grasp.

  • @klutchxking518 said in Idea Time #7: Toggleable Glow!:

@cotu42 Say you wear all the glowy stuff, but one day, you decide to go board a ship. Either you change your entire outfit for this one occasion, or you get spotted and killed because you were glowing.

Or you just board, I have worn my flashy outfit and it doesn't make much difference in combat at all.

  • @cotu42 in the event that it does make a difference.

  • @klutchxking518 Stop flaunting your status and pick something that suits you instead ... I don't get your issue. Being a Pirate Legend Athena 10 and wanting to flaunt it means that you want to stand out. Show who is the boss pirate... Showing off comes at a price of visibility, but might cause intimidation... Don't show off if it bothers you. You still have the title if you want to be less flashy if you want to still show you are a level 10.

  • @cotu42 I never said I enjoy flaunting status like that. I'm saying that those who wear glowy things shouldnt be at a disadvantage in pvp just because of their cosmetics.

  • @klutchxking518 well they aren't at a disadvantage, sure you are less sneaky and tucking is not something one should do in a ghost outfit. Yet in combat it doesn't matter, you also gain an intimidating factor of a oh no legend Athena opponent.

I have literally heard pure panic on hot mic just because I was wearing said ghost outfit.

If you enjoy flaunting and/or glowing outfits wear them. Else you can pick a whole bunch of other stuff to wear.

It is like stating all pets need to be removed because they can give away you are there and yet people want to use pets. It is a personal preference and choice.

There is no need to make some over the top mechanic to fix something that is not broken.

  • @klutchxking518 said in Idea Time #7: Toggleable Glow!:

@viperishemu2992 The ones being punished are the ones trying to sneak up on my ship while wearing a beacon. They shouldnt have to completely change their outfit to do what any other player can

They probably shouldn't be wearing a "beacon" in the first place if they plan on using stealth. Just like they probably should be carrying a Blunderbuss if they are planning on boarding. But that's totally up to them. This game is full of choices. Choices come with consequences.

There's a Clothing Chest on every ship and outpost where you can toggle your clothes. Players can choose whether to be a "glow stick" or not by using that. If they choose to be a "glow stick" .... consequences.

You are adding a solution to a problem that already has a solution. That's why I suggested applying Occam's Razor to your solutions in the future to check if they are valid.

  • @viperishemu2992 Yet the clothing chest requires time and players may not want to change clothes in the middle of a fight/before a fight for one occasion. Thus i suggested that a quick option to toggle the glow be added so players can look how they want without having reprocussions
