Could the cutlass block bullets?

  • Cutlass is a melee weapon so we need time to reach the enemies, the block would be a good feature to do so. Instead of negating the damage entirely, I suggest reduction as follows:

    EoR = 20 damage (It's range weapon so more time to block better)
    Flintlock = 30 damage (Medium range so less time)
    Blunderbuss = 5 damage per pellet and for each bullet hit it reflects 5 damage back to the shooter. (Close range and pellets can bounce off metal)

    This would make the Cutlass much better option than it is now, and the gun-play would require certain level of strategy and timing for the best result.

    honestly i had a similar idea some weeks ago already.
    But not make it reduce damage, but to be able to counter a bullet with your cutlass like a tennis player.
    If your timing is correct the bullet would be repulsed by the cutlass.

  • Silly idea that makes a already fantasy based game seem unrealistic

    Im all up for making the cutlass even better than it already is but imo this is far from it.

  • @itz-majman We can shoot ourselves from cannons, there are ghosts, skeletons and other magical things so being able to block a bullet from unrealistic guns is actually more in the realistic realm.

    The main issue of the sword is the melee range and burst damage of the guns. Allowing us to block the bullets would decrease the damage and because the gunners would have to wait for better opening or shoot for less it would also help with the range issue. In my opinion it could be quite solid fix and with the increased usage of block it would also improve the utility of the sword lunge.

  • @targasbr I like his idea as well, but doubt the devs would be able to execute it properly due to the latency and server issues.

  • This is too much. Just increase the sword's overall damage and some quality of life changes, and it'll be useful again.

  • @jusey1z Increased damage doesn't do much when the gunner kills the sword user before she can even swing her sword. Improving the defense on the other hand is the way to go. We have plenty of guns for high damage, it's time to have a weapon for high defense and Cutlass is perfect for that role as it already can block, it just needs new utility specificaly against the guns. Such change wouldn't just improve the Cutlass itself, it would also make the combat more interesting, because people would have to think about what the sword users are doing instead of just aiming for their hit-box and shooting quickly.

  • @jusey1z Even if it did zero dmg, the sword will always be useful as long as sword lunging bug is in the game.

  • Why stop at the cutlass? Why not have the shovel, bucket, hurdy gurdy, chests, or other items also block bullets?

    No thanks. Funny in concept, but terrible in execution.

    Cutlass already has the block ability. The ability is useless against the guns. To improve the situation the logical step is to make the block useful against the guns. Damage reduction instead of 100% block is already a compromise.

    This change is also a defense against double guns both. First, the macro instant kill can be reduced to surviability. Second, carrying two guns, the gunner loses the useful block tool against the other guns, which improves the Cutlass+Gun gameplay in pvp and so pirates would use it more.

    Blocking bullets would be a great tool to play with and help the Cutlass a lot.

  • @itz-majman I think of it more as bracing for the impact, you see the bullet is going to fire, so you brace to reduce damage.

  • @archaell It wouldn't help the cutlass a lot. It would make it OP.

  • @galactic-geek Those are not mutually exlusive. The exact numbers can be tweaked so it's definitely possible to implement this feature while keeping the cutlass as viable as the guns.

  • I like this idea, but perhaps have some kind of cool down where in the reduction in damage is only applied for a short time after holding block. This will stop players from just holding block continuously and allow the shooter a fair window to apply full damage between blocks.

  • I'd love this idea or something similar to be implemented.
    However ONLY if Guns get some form of quick melee in the form of a Pistol whip or Butt stock bash.
