Where is the 9gb of content?

  • This isn't intended to be a negative post by any means. I am trying to point out that I recall updates that had more features added than this one had less of a download requirement.

9gb is a hefty amount of data to download for what people say on here (Not intended to be a big of an update/monthly updates/don't get your hopes up/been discussed bla bla bla).

Heck, I think I remember our anniversary update was probably 9 gigs or so for size.
(Just looked it up via google and old release notes. PROOF - Anniversary update was 8.90 GB for Windows 10)

What I see in the patch notes in terms of additions to the game, I don't think its really tied to what we got.

  • They might of started to add things and upgrades to game that might not be visible.

But just saying that Anniversary with 8 tall tales, Arena, Hunters call, Cosmetics, changes, etc. all had less download than ..

    Chest of Rage + Voyages
    5 New tomes..

  • @lord-szarvas what @ajm123 said...probably stuff, that happens next update, was included...

  • Fingers crossed they're adding some big changes behind the scenes that'll pay off on the second anniversary update (or sooner if we'er lucky!)

  • @targasbr Your post has been edited as it goes against the Forum Rules and Pirate Code.

    Thank you.

  • It's content for the next update. Normally they don't include the files until the update is ready but some of the files might be necessary for the current update.

At least it gives you an idea that the upcoming major update will have a lot of content! Or at least a lot of high quality skins. For all we know, it could be a crab that you ride! He-Man on a Crab

  • @triheadedmonkey I got your point, but this was just a Joke.

  • Download size is never going to be tied to the amount of changes. Small changes in a library could cause other dependent files to need to be rebuilt and downloaded completely even if they themselves weren't changed.

New or changed assets (textures, models) are also going to create bigger downloads even though they don't really change a lot gameplay-wise.

As many have said before me, the download size isn't related to the amount of features you'll get. Improvements to the codebase will also result in larger downloads.

In short: download size != amount of features

  • @murkrage

    Wrong.

Bulk data is usually relied on textures and assets.
When they bug fix, they fix strings of code and change variables. They don't overhaul or redo the entire structure of the game unless there is something causes 'critical errors' where compiled data actually causes the entire game to crash.

Its true, connected features are tied into the base code but the base code for the game was done a long time ago. The same crew that made the game are not the same crew making features today, because they don't have to start things from scratch. They have the base game.

The Anniversary update brought a lot of features and they did bug-fix (as bug fixing is inevitable with every single update).

All I am pointing out is that we got 9 gigs to download and change our base clients to the updated version. 9 gigs does not amount to the content we got. So, its probably true that they dumped code for the next update. What that is? I don't know.

If you change a variable in a 1MB dll package and rebuild, you are probably going to need to download the 1MB package again even though your change was only a few bytes.

This is of course assuming they don't have a delta file diff system which would save some space. Even if they don't use delta patches and they compress the download, you are still going to end up downloading more data than was actually changed. If they do have file delta patches, there is still going to be overhead for the update system to determine how to manipulate the existing files to update them to the new version.

In every case, you end up downloading more than was actually changed.

  • Its not just 9gb of new data, a lot of data is replacing current data in the new build. Pushing hotfixes only works for so long before files are best being replaced entirely.

    In 2020 9gb is a tiny download.

  • @pbailey89 imagine 9gb of Content in Floppy Discs # goodol90s

  • a lot of it is actually preparations for the next update
